ParticipantOh my… and there *are* 8 more Zhang Yans in my billeting 8O
No… no I won't use them. My conscience is not letting me.

ModeratorUgg… I fixed that then had a text bug mishap and thought I fixed it again. I'll test it.
EDIT: Ya the Sun Ce / Zhang Yan stuff isn't right at all. Will fix.
EDIT2: This may be a complicated fix. Billeting starts at $6330. As a temporary fix you can manually remove Zhang Yan's ID from that list (B7). If you want to stop the recruits you can edit the text to remove the event. The text is:
My bandits and I
have been
defeated. Indeed[>]
you are strong. I
surrender. How
may I serve.[>]
Zhang Yan
joined our army.
[EVENT-B72E] <– remove this event
I'll do a permanent fix in the next day or so…

ModeratorOK lud, that bug(s) is fixed. Too bad you hit that. You missed some cool Sun Ce stuff. Since you missed it, I'll post it:

Here's the new ROM:

You'll still have to clean out all the Zhang Yan clones from billeting which starts at $6330. Just change the B7's into 00's. If you have any other generals recruited after the B7's just move them to where the B7's started.

ParticipantWell, I finished pummelling Cao Cao. This was a very well done mod, and it is the first I have played that significantly changed the story line. It should spark the imagination as I begin pondering what I'd like to do with the Wu cast.
Final thoughts:
* It was interesting recruiting Jia Xu and Zhang Liao at the end… I only had to fight Cao Cao, Guo Jia, Xun Yu and Xu Chu and that made the last battle a bit more manageable. Three generals with Raise… had to be quick with that Thwart tactic!
* Another smile-worthy moment: Guan Yu ending up on different sides of the battle than Liu Bei… Liu Bei was the one who laid a successful Doubt on Guan Yu in that battle. I see how much that blood-oath meant
* Liu Bei didn't even make the cut for the final battles at Luo Yang! My final army lineup:
Yuan Shang
Ju Shou
Zhang Liao
Yan Liang <- Mr. I-Will-Kill-You-All-With-My-DragonS
Zhang He
* Tian Feng
Jia Xu
* What was especially interesting was how you edited some of the events in the game. I must research the Hacking Guide and learn from the masters…

Err at least he was supposed to be.
Quote:* Another smile-worthy moment: Guan Yu ending up on different sides of the battle than Liu Bei… Liu Bei was the one who laid a successful Doubt on Guan Yu in that battle. I see how much that blood-oath meantIt actually kind of happened, at least that they were on opposite ends of the war between Yuan Shao and Cao Cao:
Skirmishes along the Yellow River
"Yuan Shao's general Yan Liang crossed the Yellow River and attacked Cao Cao's fort at Boma, besieging it. Heeding his advisor Xun You's advice, Cao Cao led a battalion toward Yan Ford as a feint to trick Yuan Shao into believing that Cao Cao would attack his camp on the other side of the river. Yuan Shao split off his troops from Liyang to counter Cao Cao's attack. Hence Yan Liang's siege at Boma across from Liyang became unsupported. Cao Cao then struck eastward to lift the siege on Boma. In the ensuing battle, Yan Liang was killed by Guan Yu and Yuan Shao's troops were routed.
Cao Cao then decided to abandon the fort and evacuated its occupants southward. Taking advantage of the situation, Yuan Shao's forces of 6,000 light cavalry led by Wen Chou and Liu Bei set off in pursuit. However, Cao Cao anticipated the attack and prepared a distraction tactic. He ordered his troops to discard their steeds, weapons and other valuables along the way. Yuan Shao's forces were tempted by greed and broke their ranks to grab the valuables lying ahead. Just as they were grabbing valuables, Cao Cao's 600 elite cavalry, which had been lying in ambush, attacked. In the chaos, Yuan Shao's commander Wen Chou was killed and Liu Bei fled. Even before the main engagement at Guandu, these relatively minor skirmishes inflicted a crushing blow to the morale of Yuan Shao's army as Yuan Shao had already lost two elite generals at the start of the campaign."

Quote:What was especially interesting was how you edited some of the events in the game. Some things like the Yuan Shu thing were fairly easy but swapping the Pang Tong/Lu Bu battles was a pain as it had several gotchas after the fact (like the Zhang Yan clone thing). I think all those issues are resolved now though.
Any interesting life/raise moments in your playthrough? Ie…did they bring anybody back that was really badazz?
November 30, 2011 at 8:44 pm #37797ludmeister
ParticipantIn the Liu Bei battle at Xu Zhou, Zhou Yun brought back Guan Yu with Life… but that was short-lived. Cao Cao was quick with his Raise tactic twice, and he brought back Guo Jia in the last battle, and Xu Chu in battle at Ru Nan (I believe it was). I wanted to get rid of the fighters while Thwart was active, leaving the tacticians alone… and that was a mistake in that battle.
Then again, Raise was my friend too. It saved a few officers who got Removed (including Zhang He who happened to get Removed by some penny-ante 180-something Int officer… boo-hiss random number generator). Raise paid off in spades again in Wu when I purposely let Yuan Shang go down to an attack (since everyone targeted him for like eight straight attacks) and Miracle wasn't keeping his men healthy. Worked like a charm :-)

ModeratorQuote:Cao Cao was quick with his Raise tactic twice, and he brought back Guo Jia in the last battle, and Xu Chu in battle at Ru Nan (I believe it was).Ouch… Those were nasty raises but at least you got rid of Cao Cao after that I assume. Guo Jia's rally is super dangerous and Xu Chu hits like a truck.
I've made some good changes after your playthrough lud including some nasty lil bug fixes (like the Zhang Yan thing… ). Thanks for playing! :D

ModeratorMade some minor tweeks mostly based on lud's feedback:
– Renamed dagger and upped its power a bit
– Event bug fixed
– Weapons are pre-equipped when game starts
– Random enemies beefed up a bit
– Status page STR/INT/AGI bars tweeked
– Agility fixed on some generals
– Zhang Liao no longer recruitable (I hope)
– Miracle healing potential goes from 4500 to 7000 (cost goes from 4 to 7)

These are two things I want you to post in the hacking guide :) And also how to change the Liu Bei sprite on the throne if its not already there.

ModeratorQuote:These are two things I want you to post in the hacking guideThey are already there. For the first one check the bottom of the miscellaneous chapter. For the 2nd one I stuck the changes in after the 8 tactics thing. I'll put it in the IPS patch too.
Quote:And also how to change the Liu Bei sprite on the throne if its not already there.Liu Bei's sprite is "advisor". I had a hard time finding where it chose that sprite so I simply uploaded the Yuan Shao sprite OVER the advisor sprite with feidian. Advisor is the very first sprite and lives at 0x90 if I remember correctly.
I also messed with some events in the game but you'll just have to play to see what they are… :P

I'll put it in the IPS patch too.Problem with this is that using the IPS patch with ALL those adjustments will overwrite ALL the tactic changes I have made… If the amount of hex to change is reasonably small I'd rather do that at the current time.

ModeratorUnderstood. I put in the changes that I got from lud in the guide with a minor tweek. They were:
0x385cb: 15 <– how much a "||" character is worth for STR/INT/AGI bar
0x385d9: 0a <– how much a "| " character is worth for STR/INT/AGI bar
0x3ea47: 16 <– How long a Stat bar entry is allowed to be in the status screen

ModeratorUpdated the first post. Added some milestones:
Milestones:
– This was the very first MOD to change the map (done by hand before DoaEditor could edit the map – ouch).
– First mod to use additional portraits and sprites in an expanded ROM.
– First mod to use brand new DoaE tactics (Life and Raise)
– First mod to make the Guan Yu and Zhang Fei characters billetable.
– First mod to use a new chapter (Liu Bei's Wu part 2 chapter).
– First mod to kick Liu Bei's sprite out of his chair.
– First mod to use all IPS patch enhancements.
– First mod to manipulate some traditional DoaE events (you'll have to play to find out what they are).

Adding 0x80 to the item ID shows the weapon as equipped but it needs a bit of extra code to load the AP and AC when the game starts. I saw how lud was doing it in his ROM and added it to the guide (with credit to lud of course), see the misc section.
