ParticipantQuote:Well, if you could really create your own tactics, you could get some dominant combinations. How about Wan Fu, Jin Xian, Ce Mian, Ji Mian, Bei Ji and An Sha? Covers pretty much everything…The goal isn't to make the AI determine the ideal combination, but to determine the best strategy for each possible non-trivial and non-redundant combination.
Real life is for looozers, that's why I'm a poker player :D

ParticipantQuote:What's with DaoE? Destiny An Of Emperor?Uhhh yeah…what game are YOU guys talking about?? Destiny Of An Emperor? What the heck game is that?? :P
What I'll do is allow some freedom with the tactics. I'll allow the user to give each army any combination of tactics, and user can also choose whether traditionally separate tactics can both be in effect at once. For instance, you can make an army have both Ce Mian and Ji Mian (or Fu Bing and Bei Ji), and you also decide whether both of those tactics can be used on your enemy at the same time. In addition, you'll get to choose whether an army has a tactician, or whether each officer has his own tactics (like enemy armies in DoaE) and own amount of TP. So my program will simulate many unrealistic scenarios but the ai will be that much smarter as a result :D
Then if I ever learn NES assembly, i'll make a mod that replaces Capcom's AI with some version of mine, so the battles will be much harder. Or I can give Meteor my AI and tell him to make such a mod =)
For now, I'll go stalk/find Meteor.
What about like, the former Capcom employees who designed DoaE? Where are they hiding?

ParticipantThat thread answered questions 7 and 8.
Meteor mentioned a damage calculator he once had on geocities, so he must know the answer to #1 as well (and judging by the reading, i have a feeling he knows the answer to all of them lol). So Meteor, i humbly request a small beam of the divine light that is your vast wisdom =)
I thought of a couple more questions, ones that perhaps non-gurus could answer:
1a) Could a Power Pill (or random heavy damage) be combined with either the Bei Ji or Fu Bing tactic?
1b) If heavy damage applies to Fu Bing, is the 2nd attack half of the heavy damage, or half of what the normal damage would have been?
2) Can Bei Ji and Fu Bing both be in effect on one officer at the same time?
(Though come to think of it, I don't think those two tactics can be in one's repertoire at the same time, so no one could have ever tested this out.)
EDIT:
3) Can a Power Pill attack be repelled? What about a Bei Ji attack? What about the 2nd attack of a Fu Bing attack?
4) How does the tactic damage formula change when a fire/water protection tactic is in effect? (this one's for Meteor ofc)

ParticipantMeh i still think you guys are aliens or something lol. I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of doae, let alone play it in 2008!
So it seems like you’ve identified what most of the code represents. I was impressed that you were even able to remove a couple hidden weapons and change the contents of some treasure chests (if i remember right). That goes beyond the scope of the editor. May i ask what’s your method for figuring out which strings of hex represent which variables? Are you just doing trial and error, changing some numbers around and seeing how that changes the game?
I’m guessing this is a no, and it’s probably been asked, but is it possible to edit the maps?
I could see myself making a mod in the future…
Heyyy another question, would there be any way to copy the sound pieces from the code, and convert them to say, midis? Cuz i just thought, the intro music would make a pimp ringtone! :D

ParticipantWow!!! It’s 2008 and people are still playing DoaE??? I’m in absolute shock lol. I had no idea nerds like me even existed…u guys are my automatic best friends just for playing this game. I remember playing this game when i was 5! I couldn’t read the cartridge so instead I just called it "the three kids," referring to Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei since they were 3 small icons on the screen. Of course i didn’t play it very smart back then, and i never even made it past the first region. Then like 2 weeks ago i dusted off my NES, cleaned the doae cartridge and popped it in for old time’s sake. Long story short, I played 10-15 hours a day until i beat it lol. I remember it being good, but not so addictive! It could just be the awesome music lol.
I’m a first-person-shooter addict but DoaE has possessed me lol. A few days ago i started DoaE 2.0 and my hat’s off to the creator, the battles were definitely more challenging. In 1.0 the only tough battle was Si Ma Yi, not so in 2.0. Then again, i might have leveled up less in 2.0 since i was using a rom and could hit save/restore any time i wanted to avoid random encounters without smokepots.
Beat 2.0 this morning and i guess my next mod will be the Cao Cao one, it sounds interesting.
Great timing, i start playing these mods and school starts tomorrow lol there go this first half-semester’s grades out the window.
Pardon the long post but i still can’t believe ppl play this. Who the heck ARE you people lol.
