I’m a first-person-shooter addict but DoaE has possessed me lol. A few days ago i started DoaE 2.0 and my hat’s off to the creator, the battles were definitely more challenging. In 1.0 the only tough battle was Si Ma Yi, not so in 2.0. Then again, i might have leveled up less in 2.0 since i was using a rom and could hit save/restore any time i wanted to avoid random encounters without smokepots.
Haha… I’m so much a fan of Destiny of an Emperor it is just sad. It is the reason why Kongming’s Archives was started

You may be dirty, but I’m not sure you’re my secret!

ParticipantMeh i still think you guys are aliens or something lol. I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of doae, let alone play it in 2008!
So it seems like you’ve identified what most of the code represents. I was impressed that you were even able to remove a couple hidden weapons and change the contents of some treasure chests (if i remember right). That goes beyond the scope of the editor. May i ask what’s your method for figuring out which strings of hex represent which variables? Are you just doing trial and error, changing some numbers around and seeing how that changes the game?
I’m guessing this is a no, and it’s probably been asked, but is it possible to edit the maps?
I could see myself making a mod in the future…
Heyyy another question, would there be any way to copy the sound pieces from the code, and convert them to say, midis? Cuz i just thought, the intro music would make a pimp ringtone! :D

ParticipantIt was possible in the Wu Mod for Destiny of an Emperor 2, as the makers changed the map around a lot. Not so sure about DoaE 1.
As for the sound to midi question, I don’t think I can answer that. Maybe XZX can answer that :P

Not sure anyone here has figured out how to edit treasure chests. We can change many aspects of items, though. Just not item locations. The secret to item locations is going to be tied to the secret to editing towns and the map. Mostly we’ve figured out how to edit the crap out of officers, battles, equipment, events and text.
To edit we skim over the source looking for patterns. Or you convert known values to hexadecimal in the format you would expect and search for them. There is another way: you can reverse-engineer a Game Genie code to find out what point it references in the hex code. Using this, for example, it would be very easy to find out how to change the equipment in a shop (as a Game Genie code already exists for that).
I always give credit to Niahak for most of this. He’s the reason why I even started trying to figure it out. Before DoaE 2.0 I had never so much as hacked a word in a ROM.

Anything is possible with the right knowledge and time.
That is the sort of thing that we’d probably have to write a tool to help out with, though.

Sure! Regular music is converted to Midi format using third party software (when not already in Midi format). I ripped the Destiny of an Emperor soundtrack quite some time ago. You can download it from http://kongming.net/ (click on the ‘music’ link on the right-hand side; it is going to expect you to have some basic Three Kingdoms knowledge, so if you don’t know, be quick with Google) or I can send you a link. All you have to do is use a program to convert the music from there.

You’re telling me! If it weren’t for the internet I’d still be convinced I was the only one in the world who knew about it. It’s not the only game that’s that way, but I think it actually is the rarest.

I’m guessing it’s possible to edit the maps – just nobody knows how. I’ve looked for patterns in the ROM till it gave me headaches, but you’re welcome to try. I’ve been mulling over here and there the best patterns to look for – those maps have to have a lot of data, and I think they are compressed in some way. If you’re going to look for map data, I’d recommend a known example – say, that you know a certain order of terrains appears at a certain place. I tried looking for the internals of a house, for example – do a relative search for AAAAA… for the number of tiles that’re identical, and when a match looks likely you may be able to figure out what terrain types mean.
As far as what James said… I’d have to say I have an obsession with TK games in general and DoaE in particular in a lot of the same ways. I’m not sure just what’s so catchy about DoaE – it’s so approachable, has such a cool (but simple) battle system, great music, and of course contains Yuan Shu among other quirky villains :)

ParticipantHey guys,
Not sure if this has been discussed before, but are we going to see Huo Hu in this mod?
I’m running out of powder!

ParticipantYou know… it really would be a shame to leave Huo Hu out…
I’ll have to include him as some sort of special character.
Maybe I’ll give him a special storyline in place of Lu Bu

KeymasterUpdated the link on the front page to go to the Cao Cao .50 download on page 8 of this thread :)
And yes, it would be a shame to not have Huo Hu. Though I can’t imagine how anyone could fit him into their party with the stable of generals Cao Pi comes across. :shroom:

ParticipantI’ve finished Wu up until after the death of Sun Quan, and I’ve started writing some scripts in Jianye. As part of that process I created Liu Shan (for name references as people will start making reference to him here). That’ll be about it for today, but I thought I’d share another teaser.

As you can see Liu Shan is the only person who’s been properly set up in this battle!

What do you think about Liu Shan’s portrait? It’s a custom job based on various Destiny of an Emperor 3 portraits and manually converted, pixel by pixel, to something compatible with Destiny of an Emperor 1. I think it turned out pretty good!

ParticipantAs for Huo Hu, I’m still not sure if he’s going to make any appearance in the game. Perhaps as a roaming officer in Shu just for the sake of him being Huo Hu? Who knows! Or maybe a villager somewhere will at least pay homage to him–do I already have them chatting about him in Hulao? I guess I’ll find out soon.
But yeah, Cao Cao’s roster is impressive to say the least…

Moderatorssshhh, Liu Shan’s stats are about ten times what they should be!

KeymasterI think you do mention Huo Hu’s powder-like ways at Hulao Gate. Someone does at least. With Wei’s massive army only a few of us LYS.com Huo Hu servants would think to use him. Even then I doubt he’d get much burn.
Liu Shan looks nice but yes, you almost hooked him up too much. 162 INT is wrong lol. I think you have the right idea though. Low strength but a really strong weapon suits him well. Avatar is good. I like those DoaE 3 SNES avatars, they’re fresh since none of us really played that simulation game.
DA, mind me asking whereabouts you reside? You are on at odd hours, makes me think you are not based in the U S of A. :albino:
