1991 Oakland Athletics Team Analysis : Wow, what an amazing team. Despite some holes in the back end of the rotation and the batting order, some of the very best players in the game play for Oakland. We’ll start with DHIL aka Rickey Henderson, who is tied for the fastest player. Can’t fathom a better leadoff hitter – he’ll hit HR’s too, and is very dangerous to play against. DHIL will constantly leg out singles from meager infield grounders. JUAN acts as the stereotypical #2 hitter black hole, so send him to the bottom of the order (JUAN is bad, but the bench is even worse). The middle of the order is brimming with power – MGEL and KARL are naturally Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco. MGEL has the most power, but it is Canseco (KARL) who deserves mention. He is as fast as DHIL but with 35 HR’s and 15 for fielding! Canseco is an absolute beast in this game. ART (Dave Henderson) acts as a sneaky #5 hitter considering the hitters you face before him, and BRY (Ernest Riles) isn’t bad either. Having three offensive players providing nothing (ROD, JUAN and DENY) you’d think would weigh the team down, but MGEL KARL DHIL and ART tend to shine above them.
The SP staff is rich in stamina. Dave Stewart (KEN) is one of the best starters in the game – not the fastest but terrific stamina and movement on his pitches. The other starters are okay especially Bob Welch, but Eckersley is worth mentioning as the closer. He has a sub 0.50 ERA with electric movement, but his pitch speed and ST is less than you’d think.
