ParticipantI wouldn?t use your other officer hires. Ma Chao is tough, but the rest of Shu is easy. I would save them for Wu. If you can?t beat Ma Chao, you may want to hire Gan Ning. If you can beat Zhou Yu, you may want to hire Zhou Yu, or wait and maybe hire someone like Taishi Ci. Also note that if you hold out to the end, you could even hire wonderful officers like Cao Zhang.
Edit: Oh, and Liu Zheng. To open the door easily, just stand in front of it and tap the up button with a short gap in between each press. No need to move, no need to hold it down, no need to ram it. Just tap it and, if you do it properly, after around four or five presses it will swing right open.

ParticipantI’m playing Destiny of an Emperor again. Mostly because I don?t have a save file on my computer to snatch random screenshots from anymore, but in part because I have always wanted to try something. As I mentioned in another thread, I only fight battles that are absolutely necessary up until I get Zhuge Liang. I was wondering, though. Would it be possible to beat the game this way? Reach Sima Yi on the lowest possible level? I?m going to see if I can do it now.
If anyone wants to try it out with me, here are the rules.
Destiny of an Emperor Challenge
1) You must only fight battles that cannot be avoided.
(No hiring officers, no saving up experience.)
2) You can choose between the two different Zhang Jao battles
3) You can hire Han Zhong.
4) You can hire L? Bu.
5) You should execute Yuan Shu.
(Although a certain person here can spare him, I suppose?)
6) You can fight and hire Pang Tong. *
7) You can fight and kill L? Bu in Ba-Shu. *
8) You can fight the Pirate Force in Wu. *
9) You must not fight special in-city battles (e.g. Ma Yuan Yi or L? Meng).
10) If running an emulator, no freeze/defrost or rewind features. No field saves.
* Though these three choices are available for this challenge, doing so may not allow you to reach Sima Yi at the ?lowest possible? level. If you wish to reach Sima Yi at the lowest possible level, you should skip these events?or at least the Pirate Force, which provides the most experience.
Decrease Difficulty:
1) You may fight three field battles to hire three officers.
(You must restart if you don?t hire the officer in question.)
Increase challenge to insane difficulty:
1) You cannot use Power Pills.
(Good luck?)
Advice
If you are going to pull this off, be careful. Save your gold because it is precious. You won?t have enough to buy everything you want, and there will be a few items (like the Silver Key) that you need, but won?t be able to get, if you buy equipment instead. Plan ahead. If you will get items in a cave, don?t buy them sooner. Think of creative ways to take advantage of tough situations (for example, it may be a good idea to use Xu Zhe in battle and as a strategist in order to defeat the likes of Xu Shou and Yuan Shao (with help of his ability to cast tactics well), but you will have to give him top-notch armor. See the screenshots below from my current game.

It will be interesting to see how things go once I reach Wu and Wei. By the time I am in Shu, normally, I?ve been happily saving up experience as I go along, and I sometimes stop to search for good officers. I?m not going to be able to do that this time around. I?ll be creating a feature on this challenge at KMA as well once I am a fair distance into it. :)

I have been playing my game without Power Pills. I got smacked around hard on that battle.
(I?m not sure I?ll be playing without power pills come time to face Ma Chao or Zhou Yu.)
I just finished my battle with Yuan Shao. :)

KeymasterOkay that makes 15 deaths at Po Yang Fortress (or whatever fortress Chen Pu and that bastard Zhang Zhao are at). Still haven’t got Pang Tong yet, maybe I’ll have to give in…

Keymasterhaha no worries Qidpo.
Today is a new day. Nice and refreshed and ready to take out that bastard Chen Pu who keeps casting Ji Rou and ruining my plans of conquest. He will die whether I have to get Pang Tong or not.

ParticipantHi qidpo! :D
– – – – – – – – – –
So you beat Zhou Yu? How did you do it?
I just finished the battle, and here?s some screenshots and an explanation.

Though I am happy to still have Ji Rou (I wonder how soon I?ll lose it; I know I?ve been here with Ji Rou many times before) I was secretly hoping for an easy way out like An Sha. I guess I won?t get that for a few level-ups to come. I got an idea when I saw Yi Xin, though. I took Ma Chao out of my party (though in all honesty Zhang Bao may have been better taken out?he is a mixed blessing in this battle) and added Pang Tong. I gave Pang Tong the good ol? Chi Tu Ma.
Round 1
At the start of the battle, I had Pang Tong cast Yi Xin on Zhou Yu. I didn?t expect this to work too easily, and I knew if it failed a good Ji Mian or An Sha could spell death for my party. I expected to have to come back a few times. No need, though, Pang Tong went first and nailed Zhou Yu. All my other party members used Bei Ji on themselves.
Round 2
The next round I had Pang Tong use Bei Ji on himself, and everyone else used Power Pills on Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu broke out of Yi Xin, but he was under 1,000 soldiers?well within the range of any of my officers. I had Pang Tong cast Hong Shui to try and get him (not sure if he could take down 800 soldiers) and everyone else used Power Pills again. Pang Tong missed, but Zhou Yu died on the next attack. Everyone proceeded to tear into Gu Yong.
Round 3
I went all-out. I got hit with a really nasty water tactic in the process, but the battle ended quickly. In retrospect, Li Jian and Hong Shui, combined with the thought of facing Zhou Yu again, should have been reason enough not to go all-out at all. He?s defeated though, so it is on to the next battle. :)

Was Pang Tong needed?
Nah, probably not, but I?m sure having him around makes this battle much easier. The only other person who could be used to take this approach well is Zhuge Liang. It would be quite a bit harder with the somewhat lower intelligence of the Ma brothers, for example. Here?s the catch: Zhuge Liang?s agility isn?t too hot, and he doesn?t go first (even with Chi Tu Ma) much compared to people like Guan Xing. Pang Tong?s higher agility and great intelligence make him ideal for this battle. Still, Zhuge Liang would be more successful with Yi Xin.
What else is necessary?
You will want to have Battleaxes for everyone except for your best warrior, who should have the Scimitar found in the previous city. Having top-tier weapons makes all the difference in this battle, where a single round can pretty much spell the death of your entire party (who am I kidding?it would far more often than not).

ParticipantAnd I just got slaughtered by Zhuge Jin? Haha?

And additional clarification. When I envisioned the challenge I did picture it including battles like Lu Bu, Pang Tong, and the Pirate Force. I can see how this might be a little confusing given the original wording. Though, in retrospect, not including those battles, aside from the difficulty of the battles themselves, would increase the game difficulty a little.
I guess that is a good thing to add as one of the challenge?s options.

ParticipantHmm, Zhou Yu has 6365 soldiers in the NES DOAE. I am now absolutely sure that the Taiwanese PC version has a different level cap. Zhou Yu has over 20000 soldiers in the PC.

ParticipantOh wow? it sounds like your version of the game is very different?
I?m curious after all your comments about it. Where could I get a copy of the game?
– – – – – – – – – –
I think I?m not going to fight the Pirate Force. Make the game harder, and increase my chances of arriving to face Sima Yi at the lowest possible level. I can pretty much guess if I have missed it knowing the rough estimate of experience from battles with L? Bu and Pang Tong. I do have to admit?Pang Tong was a help.
But now? I?m facing Chen Pu, and I have lost Yi Xin. All I can do is pray that Zhang Zhao doesn?t used Ji Mian and Chen Pu doesn?t use Ji Rou too early in the battle. At least they can?t cast Hong Shui? thank the heavens.

KeymasterIndeed, I second that. Sounds very different and I’d like to try it….I’m trying to finish this Challenge so I can play the Japanese version now that Kongming is back up.
As for Po Yang, well, I was careless the first few times I guess. First of all I did it with Ma Su in my party because I forgot to substitute in Guan Xing (I never even got Zhang Bao – a good thing in my mind). Anyway, I basically took turns using Li Jian (Ma Liang – strategist) on Chen Pu and Zhang Zhao to neutralize them with a Chi Tu Ma-equipped Zhuge. Bu Xi was basically worthless.

AN SHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
