Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterI play on speedup, I can get through the game in half a day :P
Yes that is my other complaint is that by the end of the game you wonder who the ruler is with all the Wei allies we essentially must use. I'd rather see Lu Bu, Jia Xu, Li Ru, maybe Dong Zhuo himself in the front lines to the end. That's just me, but like I said with how difficult it is later on through Wei, it is unlikely a party of Dong Zhuo-only members would be able to win.
Ma Chao I wasn't using until the end. I was using his slot for recruited characters with high soldier counts but at the end I was just looking for an Ally with level-up since no recruited character has a soldier count to compare at level 50.

ParticipantGasp. You don't go to Level 51?

ParticipantThank you for the feedback. James uses 255 for Zuo Ci in his mods, making all damage = 1. That being said, I'll have to let up on it. I'm going to go through and make some changes before I start hitting text. I want to see if I can manage getting one or two specific Dong Zhuo guys in there, but his history trails off so much for obvious reasons. The idea behind some of the generals were a "what if" scenario, insinuating Dong could have had these generals if he reached this point.
I definately made some of the marquee generals in the later stages un-AnSha-able…
I'll go back through this and see if I can find some tweeks that can be made to help this. I think the most obvious change is to Li Ru. I could bump Zuo Ci to give him access to Jin Xian… that would help.
I designed that last battle to be near impossible. I actually lowered some troop counts from the original generals, already knowing it was going to be next to impossible. I stand ready to tweek that battle to make it easier…
LYS, I will be honest with you… since I only play these games on emulator/ROM version anymore… I consider save states to be inherent in the game. =)
I will go through and make some changes soon, and get some new work to you soon, along with a post regarding changes. Then I will get to text. If I had access to changing portraits and inserting ones from other games, that would be awesome. Inserting ones from RotK would be great, too.
On a slightly other topic, are there any RotK mods out there? Like 1 or something, anything anyone has ever managed to change around?

KeymasterI figured you hadn't gone through to the end many times and were going to tweak it anyway.
Regarding Dong Zhuo's allies I look at it like that too; if he survives then some of his members would too.
What changes are you planning for Li Ru? Putting him in the Zuo Ci role or just boosting his stats in general? I think his attack works for him; he was tremendously weak in DoaE so 60 is a huge boost for him and his INT (220+) is just a slight improvement over his 200+ total. Seem to be good numbers although I just used him as a tactician towards the end of his reign (through Jing Zhou and Shu). If going further in the storyline then yea he would probably need to be boosted.
A member here DragonAtma knows how to at least plug in Destiny of an Emperor II and III portraits in. I think we found with RotK portraits is that the color didn't work right when imported.
As for Romance of the Three Kingdom mods, I have no idea. No one here has messed with them. You a fan of RotK I for the NES or something? I really haven't played it much, mostly have played the Genesis ones (II and especially III).

ParticipantYes, I have it and play it often enough. Honestly, one of my favorite games ever was RoTK 9. I used to play that game for hours on end. I had to get rid of my PS2 to pay the rent a year or so ago, so I no longer have access to the game. 2 and 4 are decent. There was another one, either 10 or 11, also for PS2 that had an interesting approach that you got to play any general and play according to that generals rank, whether it be peon or emperor. That one was fun, but different.
I agree that I thought I nailed Li Ru. I thought I made Cai Yong quite attractive as well.
Would you prefer a boost to Zuo Ci's power? Perhaps Dong Min? I mean, Dong Min was such a chump… I thought I made him pretty powerful for who he was and interestingly useful for a while. I could arrange to have Lu Bu through to the end, but I'd have to make him un-AnSha-able, and that just kinda seems against the whole point.

KeymasterCai Yong was one of the most underrated characters in the game (meaning I didn't think I'd get the amount of use out of him that I did). He was always a good second or third tactician in battle with 216 INT or so.
Dong Min is fine. If anything too buffed up for his true self. Even with that I really didn't end up using him for very long.
Here's an idea. Niahak mentioned this to me today. How about Diao Chan for joining at Guang Zhong castle (Wei, Jiang Wei's spot). Or wherever really. It'd be hard having a female portrait but we have the Himiko sprite at least :P

ModeratorImport a female portrait, problem solved.
EDIT:

That took all of ten minutes. Thank you, RotK2.

KeymasterCool man. So we can import RTK portraits into the editor?
DA if you would be so kind, when you have a minute you should start a thread detailing how to replace one unique portrait with another (like in the case of this female). Maybe this information is somewhere on here, I'll try to search. But it's probably buried within some thread I'm thinking.

ModeratorUnfortunately, there's no way of importing with DoaEd (as far as I know). Adding that feature is something for Niahak to consider AFTER adding some DoaTEd upgrades. ;)
When I brought pics in, I used Tile Layer Pro; I did them by hand (well, pixel by pixel), but there's an option to import them.

ParticipantHere are a couple possible ideas that I thought of. Li Ru and Lu Bu could be replaced with other early court officials and/or Hu Zhen. They could then join in after Shu. Possible replacements could be Zhong Lao, Wang Yun, Xin Pi and Ping, or a couple others whose names are escaping me. I could move Cai Yong and Hua Xiong up to the main 2 slots, and maybe buff Hua up a little. (as a side note, if Lu Bu was replacing Hua Xiong, I could have Hua say something about not finding Lu Bu as feeble as himself, lol)
Instead of Cao Pi joining as a twist in the story line, I could have Jia Xu rejoin them there. I would then have to make a replacement for where Jia is, but that could easily be Cao Pi or any other number of people. Plenty of late Wei/early Jin strategists I haven't used.
If I did this, I could make Lu Bu un-AnSha-able. This would start to give a late game party that resembles Dong's forces a bit more. It would seem to weaken the initial stages a bit, but if I push Hua's stats a little, he more or less replaces Lu Bu, and another strategist like Zhong Yao or Wang Yun could seemingly replace Li Ru's role as delegated strategist.
This could theoretically create an end game party of Du Yu, Deng Ai, Jia Xu, Lu Bu, Li Ru, and Zuo Ci. If I boosted Zuo's INT a couple points to let him acquire Jin Xian, that fixes a good bit and gives the end game a better Dong Zhuo feel.
What do you think?
July 9, 2010 at 1:46 am #37475cabalpapa
ParticipantHmmm, except that would take out Du Yu and Deng Ai… making the flavor better, but seemingly weaker. I'll look into it!

KeymasterI like the idea of putting in Jin Xian to offset the loss of some more talented generals (though getting Lu Bu, Jia Xu, Li Ru etc at the end isn't a bad consolation prize).
Any of those officers you mentioned could fit in the aforementioned holes; Huang Wan, Dong Huang, Zhong Yao, Yang Mi, etc. Wang Yun could be good to use early on, maybe with Diao Chan or whoever to start the game in the Song bro's positions (since you'd be taking out Cai Yong and Hua Xiong to put them in the Guan Yu / Zhang Fei positions). Un An Sha-able Lu Bu would be fun to use later on with a Halberd. Even with protection from An Sha he'll get carved up by tactics that late in the game.
That would definitely give it a lot more of a Dong Zhuo flavor though, sounds good to me..

ModeratorOn a side note, if Lu Bu/Jia Xu/Li Ru rejoin later on, they may have picked up some skills during their time away (i.e. improved stats!). Given their (probably) lopsided stats, it'd probably raise the weaker of the two main stats a good 30 points or so.
July 10, 2010 at 3:04 pm #37478cabalpapa
ParticipantThese are good ideas, but that would make Jia beastly (not exactly a bad thing). Technically, Jia would be the only one returning in the above scenario.
I'm going to make some changes today, along with fixing a couple things that were wrong from before (Sima Yi's defense, making Chunyu Qiong and Lu Yi recruitable, and I think a couple others). I didn't get a chance to work on text much at all this week. I was busier than planned. I can do some this weekend, and have some updated material maybe even by tonight.
Getting to work!
July 10, 2010 at 3:22 pm #37479DragonAtma
ModeratorIf it would make him beastly then you must be using custom stats, as 18/220 -> 48/220 wouldn't do that.

Also I got tired of seeing a ridiculous tongue-smiley that looks more like an open mouth grin than a tongue-smiley, hence I edited it. LYS should replace the old one with this one.
