Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterYou serious? I know for a fact I was using Li Jian like a crackhead against Zhou Yu and Kan Ze. Hm….you must have an even lower low-level game than I had!
err wait…maybe I’m thinking of Po Yang. Maybe I just had Yi Xin. My memory is trashed, sorry.

ParticipantZhang Lu, use Yi Xin with Pang Tong!
Give Pang Tong Chi Tu Ma and cast it on Zhou Yu as soon as you enter the battle. That should give you some time which, with some luck, you can use to kill Zhou Yu. With Zhou Yu dead, your greatest threat is gone, and all you have to do from that point is kill off Gu Yong (Hong Shui is still dangerous here). If you want to use alternative tactics like Yin Xian, you will have to make Ma Liang your strategist instead of Zhuge Liang. You?ve got the same level and higher TP than I had at this point, so with some time you should manage it. :D
Here is my post on this battle:

Xian Zhu Xuande’s post on that battle… said:
I just finished the battle, and here?s some screenshots and an explanation.

Though I am happy to still have Ji Rou (I wonder how soon I?ll lose it; I know I?ve been here with Ji Rou many times before) I was secretly hoping for an easy way out like An Sha. I guess I won?t get that for a few level-ups to come. I got an idea when I saw Yi Xin, though. I took Ma Chao out of my party (though in all honesty Zhang Bao may have been better taken out?he is a mixed blessing in this battle) and added Pang Tong. I gave Pang Tong the good ol? Chi Tu Ma.
Round 1
At the start of the battle, I had Pang Tong cast Yi Xin on Zhou Yu. I didn?t expect this to work too easily, and I knew if it failed a good Ji Mian or An Sha could spell death for my party. I expected to have to come back a few times. No need, though, Pang Tong went first and nailed Zhou Yu. All my other party members used Bei Ji on themselves.
Round 2
The next round I had Pang Tong use Bei Ji on himself, and everyone else used Power Pills on Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu broke out of Yi Xin, but he was under 1,000 soldiers?well within the range of any of my officers. I had Pang Tong cast Hong Shui to try and get him (not sure if he could take down 800 soldiers) and everyone else used Power Pills again. Pang Tong missed, but Zhou Yu died on the next attack. Everyone proceeded to tear into Gu Yong.
Round 3
I went all-out. I got hit with a really nasty water tactic in the process, but the battle ended quickly. In retrospect, Li Jian and Hong Shui, combined with the thought of facing Zhou Yu again, should have been reason enough not to go all-out at all. He?s defeated though, so it is on to the next battle. :)

Was Pang Tong needed?
Nah, probably not, but I?m sure having him around makes this battle much easier. The only other person who could be used to take this approach well is Zhuge Liang. It would be quite a bit harder with the somewhat lower intelligence of the Ma brothers, for example. Here?s the catch: Zhuge Liang?s agility isn?t too hot, and he doesn?t go first (even with Chi Tu Ma) much compared to people like Guan Xing. Pang Tong?s higher agility and great intelligence make him ideal for this battle. Still, Zhuge Liang would be more successful with Yi Xin.
What else is necessary?
You will want to have Battleaxes for everyone except for your best warrior, who should have the Scimitar found in the previous city. Having top-tier weapons makes all the difference in this battle, where a single round can pretty much spell the death of your entire party (who am I kidding?it would far more often than not).

ParticipantThanks for the advice :)
When I’m done screwing around with this DoaE2 Zheng Letter bug some more, I’ll play the battle again. (Should be tomorrow) :P

ParticipantNow you just have to deal with Cheng Pu. After that, the only really truly tough battle you have ahead of you is Ru Nan.

KeymasterYeah I don’t know how you made it through that Wen Hun gate battle without it. Have you been able to beat Ji Zhou with Yuan Shu? I still haven’t done that, that might be hard.

Trial and error over many times through the game, I suppose (I played Destiny of an Emperor shortly after it was actually released; I own a few copies of the original cartridge). As you know, I used to believe that your MTP was closely linked to Zhuge Liang?s level when you hired him (I suppse in an indirect sense it has been). From that point on, I never fought battles I didn?t need to fight up until that point. I also didn?t know about the Trident. At first, I hated the battles in Yuan Shao?s area because they were so hard.
I?ve found, though, that even if you don?t buy armor, a stock of Power Pills and a few Resurrects is enough to deal with the likes of Yan Liang and Wen Chou. What I usually do now, however, is simply purchase three Padded armors when I reach Nan Yang, and as soon as I get Xu Zhe, I purchase three Wood H (I think the Wood H, having an AC of 60 for 1000 gold, is one of the finest value items in the game). That makes the Yuan Shao area manageable without having to deal with Power Pills or Resurrects (though I ususally keep a few on my strategist just in case someone is knocked off). I don?t really buy any equipment again until Cheng Du, where I may purchase some Battleaxes. I tend to have some goofy Wood Hs on my officers even when I reach Wei.

KeymasterYeah I just noticed that too recently, Wood Hoods are pretty good at Bo Hai castle. I should probably just go armorless until there and get them and save them until the Steel Helmet’s in Wei.

ParticipantOh, and yeah, and in my experience the Yuan Shao battle isn?t too much more horrible with Yuan Shu in it (Lu Bu, and to a lesser degree, Zhang He, are the people who scare me in that battle). Without Power Pills, however, or even worse yet without the Trident, I think Yuan Shu would be enough of a presence to inspire frightful phear. I tended to kill him, though, wanting to see Zhuge Liang in my party at level 16 again.

Yeah, upgrades just get pretty crappy from that point. Thinking it through, makes me want to buy more Wood Hs.

ParticipantI picked this up again, and am doing quite well. Bei Ji has been a lifesaver for Ma Chao and Zhao Yun. I’m at the 3rd gate to Jian Ye, about to fight Sun Huan, Xu Sheng, and Lu Ji.
EDIT: Beat Sun Huan, will now battle at Jian Ye, and after beating Taishi Ci, I will use up the 2nd of my 3 recruits on Taishi Ci, leaving one left for me to potentially recruit either Xiahou Yuan or Cao Zhang in Wei…though Lu Sun (Xun) looks VERY appealing. I may blow off Taishi Ci and recruit him instead, put Pang Tong in the reserves, and let Lu Sun led me through Wei.
EDIT #2: Defeated Sun Quan, will post screenie tomorrow.

ParticipantI do not have a screenie, sorry. I took it, then shut the computer down, thinking I already pasted and saved it…guess I didn’t.
Anyway, I promise this week I’ll put a screen with my party’s look so far.
