This is the official English Legends of Cao Cao guide for Lordyuanshu.com.
Note: The red-blue line affects your storyline. Red is for the "Evil" path and Blue is for the "Good" path. The walkthrough for the Red Storyline is completed, while the Blue Storyline path is in progress. Both storylines are the same up until about halfway through Chapter 3, so you can still use most of the guide even if you’re going on the Blue Storyline.
_________
Prologue
Before battle: Cao Cao and some soldiers are walking down the street when Xu Zijiang stops them. You’ll have a choice here, which will affect your red-blue bar up top a good deal. The bar dictates how good/evil your actions are. Pick the top choice for a red boost or the bottom choice for a blue boost. After this, you’ll begin a battle.
Battle 1: Yellow Scarves
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang within 20 turns!
Enemies: 12 Bandits, Zhang Bao (Status Mage), Zhang Liang (Status Mage)
Allies: 2 Han Soldiers, Han Archer, 2 Han Cavalry, Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1000 Gold
Special Items: Way of Peace (kill Zhang Bao)
The Scarves are camped out in the middle of the map, with the Zhang brothers in the middle and a few bandits at the bottom killing off some Han troops. The Han forces will get their turn to move and, on the enemy turn, Liu Bei and his brothers will show up in the northeast. On the second friendly turn, Liu Bei’s group will light a few fires, Xu Zijiang uses a fire spell to cause the fires to engulf the top half of the camp, and all the Scarves will become confused. Cao Cao and two Wei officers will also arrive and move south to the camp entrance. Xu Zijiang will pop up and offer to show you the battle basics; pick the first option each time to learn, or pick the second option if you already know how to play (or you’re like me and don’t understand what he’s saying anyway). If you’ve beaten the game and are playing through a consecutive time, Xu Zijiang will also offer to boost your level a little; if you turn him down, he’ll give you some gold instead.
To win this battle you need to kill the two Zhang brothers in the middle. You can only control Cao Cao in this battle, so just move him around and hit some Scarves so you’ll know how the battle system works. Don’t worry, the rest of your army is powerful enough to easily kill all the enemies. Make sure to move Cao Cao over to the tents so you can raid them for treasure. Zhang Bao tends to cast Poison on your units while the other Scarves just attack. Note that if you move Cao Cao next to Zhang Bao you’ll get a few extra lines of dialogue. After both Zhang brothers are dead, the battle ends and you’ll get 1000 gold. You’ll be asked to save your game as well.
Staying low level: The enemies in LoCC have levels based not on the map, but of the average level of your active party (all party members on the map). You might therefore want to keep your level low in order to force the enemies to have less strength and abilities. For this map, just move Cao Cao to the tents for the free items while Liu Bei’s group and the Han soldiers kill everyone.

Chapter 1: Birth of a Conquerer
You’ll learn the backstory here. 1800 years ago, in 184 AD, the Han dynasty, which had ruled over China for centuries, had become corrupt and inept. Zhang Jiao and his brothers Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang started a revolt, the Yellow Turban Rebellion, to try and overthrow the Han. The Han forces, including Cao Cao, managed to suppress the rebellion, but the damage to the Han was already done. Five years later, after Emperor Ling’s death, the leader of the Army He Jin called all of Han’s generals to the capital Luoyang to eradicate the Ten Eunuchs. During the confusion, Xi Liang governer Dong Zhuo manages to seize power. At a banquet, he proposes removing the young current Emperor, Emperor Shao, and replacing him with another prince, Liu Xie. Cao Cao and his friend Yuan Shao are against the plot, but with Li Ru and Lu Bu on Dong Zhuo’s side, they can do nothing.
Later that night, at minister Wang Yun’s house, Cao Cao comes to talk about Dong Zhuo. There will two more red-blue choices here; top is for red and bottom is for blue. Cao Cao says he’ll assassinate Dong Zhuo himself, and Wang Yun gives him the Seven Star Sword for the job. Cao Cao fails at the attempt, however, and flees to nearby Chen Liu as a fugitive. He begins building an army, and calls for local lords to form a coalition to topple Dong Zhuo and save the Emperor. Cao Cao decides to enlist capable officers for the coming battles. His relatives, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan, arrive and join his army, and Yue Jin and Li Dian also come to aid Cao Cao. The last to join up are Cao Cao’s brother, Cao Hong, and his cousin, Cao Ren.
The local governers arrive at Cao Cao’s camp to form the coalition. Cao Cao recommends that Yuan Shao, because of his family name and his high position, be elected Grand Commander, and he accepts. The coalition army moves out from Chen Liu on their march to Luo Yang. Before they can reach the capital, though, they must pass through two gates: Si Shui Guan and Hu Lao Guan. Dong Zhuo sends one of his most able generals, Hua Xiong, to guard Si Shui Guan. Yuan Shao asks who will lead the vanguard in the attack, and Sun Jian volunteers.
Now you’ll be at the Camp Menu. This is what you’ll be looking at before most battles. Click on your officers and they’ll tell you some info (not much use if you can’t read Chinese). For the bottom buttons, the far-right will show you your items, the center-right brings up a shop menu, the center-left will bring up your equipment menu, and the far-left button will show you the deployment menu.
The items menu will bring up a list of everything the Wei army has bought or found. The first page has all your equipment; click on the tab at the top to look at consumables. If an item you have can be sold, click on it and you will have the option to sell it for 75% of it’s buying price.
The shop menu lists the items that the local shops have for sale. Again, equipment is the default and consumables are on the other tab. There’s no need to buy equipment yet as only the default items are for sale, but you may want to buy some beans (a healing item) if you think you’ll need them.
The equipment menu lets you equip the gear you’ve found during the game. Unless you bought something, the Way of Peace will be the only thing here; equip it on someone if you like.
The deployment menu selects the officers you’ll be taking on the next mission. Click on the officers to move them to the bottom. Each battle has a minimum and maximum number of officers you’ll have to bring, and sometimes you’ll have to bring certain officers (like Xiahou Dun here) for story purposes. You’ll have to bring at least four officers, but you’re able to deploy all seven if you like. Press the confirm button here once you’ve got who you want and you’ll head to the battlefield.
Battle 2: Si Shui Guan
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies withing 20 turns!
Enemies: 7 Soldiers, 3 Cavalry, 4 Archers, Li Su (Status Mage), Hua Xiong (Chariot), Li Jue (Soldier), Guo Si (Soldier)
Allies: 5 Soldiers, Cheng Pu (Cavalry), Huang Gai (Cavalry), Sun Jian (Ruler), Yuan Shao (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry)
Reward: 1100 Gold
Special Items: Ancestral Sword (finish battle with Sun Jian still alive)
This is your first real battle. Dong Zhuo’s army is defending the gate here, and Sun Jian is already at the front line with his troops weakened from battle. Your units are along the east side of the map, with coalition forces above and below you. Several more enemies will pop up in the south and north forests. To win you’ll need to kill all enemies, although this isn’t too hard a task. Move your forces west to help Sun Jian. Most of the Wu forces will fall quickly, but you should try to keep Sun Jian alive. Use some healing items on him if his health gets low. Once Hua Xiong attacks someone, Yuan Shao will ask who will battle him and Guan Yu appears to take him on. Between your forces, Sun Jian’s group, and Guan Yu you should easily clear out the enemy in front of the gate. If Guan Yu stands next to Hua Xiong, they’ll enter a duel, which is just a cutscene of the two officers fighting. Most of the time duels are just triggered for flavor purposes, but sometimes on of the officers will retreat or will die outright. Guan Yu will easily kill Hua Xiong. Hua Xiong drops a glove upon death. Now send your cavalry to take out the soldiers guarding the gate, and then send your own soldiers after the archers on top. Finish off Li Su and the remaining soldier to win the battle. Make sure to walk onto the tents to get the items. Don’t worry if one of your officers is defeated, they’ll just withdraw. If Sun Jian is still alive, he’ll give you his sword.
Staying low level: Just focus on the low level generics and let Guan Yu and the Wu troops go after Hua Xiong and the officers.
Between battles: Dong Zhuo learns that Hua Xiong is dead and Si Shui Guan has fallen to the coalition. Lu Bu volunteers himself to go and defend Hu Lao Guan. Dong Zhuo decides to go as well. At the coalition’s main camp, Yuan Shu is yelled out for failing to deliver the needed supplies to Sun Jian. Sun Jian himself soon arrives and takes out his anger on Yuan Shu. Liu Bei and Cao Cao resolve the arguement, and Yuan Shao informs the lords that their next target is Hu Lao Guan.
You’ll be at the camp screen again. Give the glove from Hua Xiong to someone. If you got the sword from Sun Jian, you can give it to one of your officers for a few extra points of attack. Deploy your units for the next battle when ready.
Battle 3: Hu Lao Guan
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 15 turns!
Enemies: 4 Cavalry, 10 Archers, 4 Soldiers, Zhang Ji (Cavalry), Fan Chou (Cavalry), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry), Li Ru (Attack Mage), Dong Zhuo (Chariot)
Allies: 4 Soldiers, Tao Qian (Cavalry), Yuan Shao (Ruler), Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1100 gold, Helmet
Dong Zhuo’s army is out in force, with the bulk in front of the gate led by Lu Bu, a smaller group inside the first gate, and Dong Zhuo and Li Ru inside the second gate. Cao Cao’s group is on the right, Liu Bei’s group is south of you, and other coalition forces are behind and above you. Once you move to engage, Liu Bei and Tao Qian will move their troops to help out, while Yuan Shao stays put. Keep your forces together and focus on the same units so you can thin the crowd a little. Tao Qian’s group will serve as targets for the enemy, while Liu Bei and his brothers will definately help out killing the enemy. On turn four Yuan Shao will talk to Cao Cao and you’ll have a choice. After this, Yuan Shao’s troops will also begin moving and attacking the enemy. Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, and Liu Bei can each duel Lu Bu, although this doesn’t make him retreat. Liu Bei and Yuan Shao will heal your troops if they get weak, so don’t waste your healing items. After you’ve killed Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo and all units inside the gate will retreat, and any remaining enemies will become confused, making them easy to finish off.
Staying low level: Wait until Lu Bu is exposed and then kill him. Now let your allies slaughter the confused enemies.
Between battles: With Hu Lao Guan under their control, nothing stands between the coalition army and Luo Yang. Dong Zhuo decides to burn the capital and move his army and the people of Luo Yang west to the old capital of Chang An. There is a scene where Wang Yun and Diao Chan talk together. The coalition troops arrive in the burnt-out shell of Luo Yang. Yuan Shao decides to stay at Luo Yang instead of continuing after Dong Zhuo. Depending on how you answer (there is a very slight red-blue effect upon your answer), Cao Cao will either send out his own army in pursuit of Dong Zhuo, or will agree to stay behind with the others.
If you agreed with Yuan Shao, skip this battle and go down to the next one. Otherwise, equip your new gear and buy some healing items if you want (the shop doesn’t have any new gear), then deploy for the next battle.
Battle 4: Dong Zhuo Pursuit
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Li Ru within 20 turns!
Enemies: 10 Soldiers, 5 Archers, 3 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, Xu Rong (Cavalry), Li Jue (Soldier), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry), Li Ru (Attack Mage)
Rewards: 1300 gold
Special Items: Shield (kill Xu Rong), Grey Horse (kill Li Ru)
Dong Zhuo will realize you’re coming after him and will retreat, leaving you to deal with his rear guard. Move forward and clear out the small garrison at the fort. Heal up if you need to and move just south of your current position to the mountains. Xu Rong’s and Li Jue’s ambush parties will be exposed, as well as Lu Bu’s cavalry appearing across the river. Stay where you are and work on killing the enemies below you. Lu Bu won’t move as long as you don’t approach the river and the other ambush party will take a few turns to reach you, so you should be able to clear out the area in time. Engage the other ambush group once you’re done, and be careful not to let the enemy gang up on you. Killing Xu Rong will net you a shield. Lu Bu will start moving toward you on the enemy’s tenth turn, likely killing some of your officers. On your eleventh turn, Cao Cao will have the option to retreat; pick the first choice and your victory condition will change. Now just have your army hold back Lu Bu while Cao Cao moves to the exit panels on the far left. Once you reach the panel, Cao Cao will retreat and you’ll win the battle.
If you want to actually kill Li Ru, Terranigma Freak has this strategy: "…you can win this chapter without having to run away. You have to kill Li Ru. When Lu Bu attacks you, he’s in the upper section of the map. Split your team into 2 groups. Bait him and surround him with 4 units to keep him from moving. Heal with lots of beans. And the people who surround him shouldn’t attack him. The other group should go for the lower group of enemies. If you have the chance, charge through and ignore them and go for Li Ru. If you kill him, you win and get the Grey Horse special item."
Staying low level: The best way, of course, would be to skip this level. But if you do play it, just wait until turn 11 and then retreat without killing too many people.
Between battles: The coalition breaks down as the lords leave for their own reasons. Wang Yun decides to use Diao Chan to strain relations between Dong Zhuo and Lu Bu. It works and Lu Bu kills Dong Zhuo, but Li Jue and Guo Si drive him off and force Wang Yun to kill himself. Meanwhile, Cao Cao’s troops are trying to set up a flag when Dian Wei comes along and sets it up himself. Cao Cao adds him to the Wei lineup. Next Xun Yu and Xun You arrive to work for Cao Cao, and you’ll get another red-blue choice. Cao Cao decides to go fight some Yellow Scarves who are causing trouble.
The shop’s lineup has expanded. Equip the shield and any other items you might have, and deploy.
Battle 5: Yellow Scarves In Qingzhou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 27 Bandits
Rewards: 1300 gold
Special Items: Dark Taoist Robe (choose Xun Yu’s or Xun You’s plan), Flying Dragon Robe (choose Dian Wei’s plan)
Nine Yellow Scarves will be at each village. Before you can move, Xun Yu, Dian Wei, and Xun You will come forward and present plans. You’ll have a choice of who to agree with. Xun Yu’s plan will remove the block of enemies to your direct north, Dian Wei’s plan will take out two enemies from each block, and Xun You’s plan will cause the block to your east to move to your starting position while your troops move to surrounded it, as well as confuse some of the Scarves. Pick the plan you like and go from there. Xun Yu and Xun You are your first mages, with Xun Yu using attack magic and Xun You using healing magic. The fire spell will work on almost any terrain (unless it’s raining), while the earth magic works around hills and mountains. Nothing too hard here, just take the enemy one block at a time and you’ll do fine. The enemies won’t stray from their villages for a few turns, so you shouldn’t be flanked. You’ll get a robe as bounty, which differs depending on whose plan you went with.
Staying low level: Choose Xun Yu’s plan so you’ll have the least amount of enemies, and try to keep your levels balanced without letting one or two people get too much experience.
Between battles: Guo Jia and Cheng Yu arrive at Cao Cao’s court and pledge to serve him. Cao Cao’s father was on his way to visit him, but he was killed by Zhang Kai, a subordinate of Tao Qian. Cao Cao decides to invade Xuzhou in anger. Liu Bei leaves Gongsun Zan and moves south to help Tao Qian. Meanwhile Lu Bu takes Yanzhou while Cao Cao is away.
You can now buy more gloves and shields if you’d like. Give the robe you picked up to Dian Wei or one of your mages. For the first time, you won’t be able to deploy everyone, so pick the officers you prefer and let the others warm the bench.
Battle 6: Attack on Xuzhou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Tao Qian within 20 turns!
Enemies: 15 Soldiers, 7 Archers, 4 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, Catapult, Tao Qian (Cavalry), Mi Zhu (Mounted Archer), Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry)
Reward: 1300 gold
Special Items: Silver Armor (agree to retreat, or kill Tao Qian)
Tao Qian’s main army is inside the castle, with smaller groups at the outposts around it. Move forward and clear out the outpost in front of you. The cavalry in front of the castle will begin attacking you, so get rid of them as well. Now move foward to the gate and kill off the infantry guarding the gate. The archers and the catapult will take shots at you, so once you clear an opening move through and take them out as well. Once you’re inside the castle, the soldiers from the other outposts will begin moving toward you. On turn 8, Liu Bei’s group will arrive and Cao Cao will talk with him. You’ll have a choice here, pick the first one to retreat and receive a new armor or the second choice to keep fighting. Defeat Tao Qian to win the battle.
Staying low level: Stay at the starting point the whole time. Only the cavalry will attack you, so deal with them and then wait until Liu Bei arrives, then retreat.
Between battles: Cao Cao will cease his attack on Xuzhou as he learns that Lu Bu has come from behind and taken Yanzhou while he was away. He returns to Yanzhou to deal with Lu Bu. Yu Jin will enter your service here. You’ll access the camp menu. Deploy who you want and move out.
Battle 7: Reclaiming Yanzhou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 18 Cavalry, 10 Mounted Archers, 4 Soldiers, 4 Archers, Zang Ba (Bandit), Zhang Liao (Special Cavalry), Chen Gong (Attack Mage), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry)
Reward: 1300 gold
Special Items: Li Guan’s Bow (defeat all enemies)
For victory here you have to kill everyone, which doesn’t look easy. Lu Bu’s in the castle with both the north and the west gates well fortified. Go after whichever gate you think will be easier and focus on it. Zhang Liao and Zang Ba will start moving on the enemy’s third turn if you’re not already near one of them, and Chen Gong will send out the gate guards after you on turn four, so you’re going to have your hands full. Just kill whoever you can while keeping your health up. If you want, put Dian Wei next to Zhang Liao and they’ll duel, although this affects nothing. If two of your units have died by turn seven, you’ll have an option to retreat. If you pick the first choice, the victory condition will change to getting Cao Cao back to the starting position. You’re probably surrounded at this point, though, so have the rest of your army break a path for Cao Cao to escape through. Get Cao Cao to the escape point and you’re clear. You don’t have to retreat, though. If you can manage to defeat all the enemies, you won’t have to do the next two battles, plus you’ll get Li Guan’s Bow. Skip down to battle 10 if you defeated everyone.
Staying low level: Keep Cao Cao at the start and send out two people toward the enemy. Let them get killed off so you can escape, then just move Cao Cao up to the exit point.
Between battles: Lu Bu gloats over his victory, while Cao Cao formulates plans to take back Yanzhou. A man from the castle will arrive and offers to open the gate at night to let you in. Liu Ye also joins you now. Buy items if you need them and move out.
Battle 8: Ambush at Yanzhou
Conditions for Victory: Move Cao Cao to the escape point within 20 turns!
Enemies: 8 Soldiers, 8 Archers, 6 Bandits, 4 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, Zang Ba (Bandit), Zhang Liao (Special Cavalry), Chen Gong (Attack Mage), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1400 gold
Special Items: Chain Mail (Defeat all enemies)
The merchant will tell you to come inside. You’ll have the option of sending in your whole army or just half. After Cao Cao’s group reaches the center, Chen Gong will spring his trap and fire will start burning across the city as Lu Bu’s ambush troops appear. If you sent your whole army inside then your rear guard will become confused, however if you told them to wait they’ll be outside the city and won’t able to meet up with you for a few turns. Luckily, the fire blocks Lu Bu’s group in the center from getting at you, although Chen Gong can still hit you with his magic. You’ll need to break out of the north gate, since the east gate is blocked off, so move your troops north and kill enemies along the way. Hurry and make an opening through the enemies so Cao Cao can get out, and then block the gate with your own people to slow down Zhang Liao’s pursuit. You should be able to reach the exit in a few turns and (once again) retreat. Again, you can opt to fight the enemy here if you think you can defeat them. Winning will earn you a Chain Mail Armor and you won’t have to fight the next battle. Go to battle 10 if you won here.
Staying low level: Choose to leave half your army outside. Use your outer forces to kill one of the north gate’s guards while Cao Cao’s group deals with the bandits near their area. Then just send Cao Cao out the north gate to the exit.
Between battles: Tao Qian dies and Liu Bei takes over Xuzhou in his stead. Cao Cao backs off for a while so he can make a better plan for beating Lu Bu. While chasing some Scarves, you’ll meet Xu Chu and, after you trick him into falling in a pit, he’ll join up. You’ll get to bring everyone for this battle.
Battle 9: Second Assault on Yanzhou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 10 Cavalry, 7 Mounted Archers, 4 Soldiers, 4 Archers, Zang Ba (Bandit), Zhang Liao (Special Cavalry), Chen Gong (Attack Mage), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1500 Gold
Special Items: Lu Bu’s Bow (have the scene where the merchant closes the gates, then you must forgive the merchant)
Lu Bu’s troops are set up pretty much the same as Battle 7, just now you’re in the southwest corner. Zhang Liao and Zang Ba will move their groups toward you while the troops in the castle wait. Go to either group and start clearing them out. Zang Ba’s special item, the Featherless Arrow, allows him to attack from further way, so watch out for him. The inner castle groups will begin their attack on their fourth turn, although the gate guards won’t move. On the sixth enemy turn, Lu Bu will order the gate guards to attack too, so you’ll have everyone coming at you. Wait for all of Lu Bu’s forces to leave the castle and the merchant from before will close the gates, confusing Lu Bu’s army and making it easy to defeat. If you move Xu Chu next to Lu Bu they’ll talk and take a few swipes at each other, this also works with Xiahou Dun and Dian Wei. Chen Gong will run around healing people, but you can take advantage of this by always leaving one enemy injured. He’ll tend to keep healing til his MP runs out. Defeat all the enemies to win the battle. Even though there are a lot of them, if you brought everyone you should be able to endure long enough to kill them all. After they’re dead Cao Cao will enter the castle and will talk to the merchant. You can choose to forgive him or not. If you do, you get Lu Bu’s Bow; if not, some money.
Staying low level: Well, you have to kill everyone and you don’t have any allies this time to take the EXP for you, so just fight this battle as you usually would. Make sure to have your lower level people get in some killing blows too, especially your mages.
Between battles: Lu Bu swears revenge and retreats to Xuzhou, where he stays with Liu Bei. Meanwhile, Emperor Xian talks to Jia Xu and decides to flee with several ministers flee from Chang An. Yuan Shao is brought in but refuses to help. Cao Cao is contacted and agrees to assist the Emperor’s escape.
In the camp, give the bow to one of your archers. You get to deploy everyone again, so do so.
Battle 10: The Emperor’s Flight
Conditions for Victory: Protect the Emperor until he reaches the escape point/Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 6 Cavalry, 6 Mounted Archers, Xu Huang (Archer), Li Jue (Soldier), Guo Si (Soldier)
Allies: 2 Soldiers, Emperor Xian (Emperor)
Rewards: 1500 gold
Special Items: Golden Armor (when talking to the Emperor, pick the first choice), Sage’s Sword (when talking to the Emperor, pick the second choice)
The Emperor and two friendly officers are over on the left, just south of the Li Jue/Guo Si army. Cao Cao’s army is spread out on the other side of the mountain. For this mission, you need to protect the Emperor until he arrives at the escape point above your starting point. Quickly move around the bend and help the Han officers fight back the enemy army. The Emperor will move around behind you, so don’t worry about him unless an enemy manages to get past you. Have Cao Cao move next to the Emperor and he’ll ask you a question; you’re answer will be important when the battle ends. You can also move Cao Cao next to Xu Huang and they’ll have a conversation. The enemy army isn’t very strong here; you should have no problems. The Emperor should reach the escape point by turn 8 or so, but if you can destroy all the enemies before then, you’ll get either the Sage’s Sword or Golden Armor depending on how you answered the Emperor.
Staying low level: Move all of your forces west so you can put a wall between the Emperor and the enemy; they’re just there as diversion, don’t actually fight anyone. Have Cao Cao and Xun You escort the Emperor to the exit once he gets close, in case he needs healing.
Between battles: The Emperor, now safe, leaves for Xu Chang. Man Chong arrives, and Cao Cao sends him to recruit Xu Huang; they both join your army. The court is moved to Xu Chang, Cao Cao’s capital. Liu Bei and his brothers come to Xu Chang, having been driven out of Xuzhou by Lu Bu. Cao Cao wants to get rid of Lu Bu, but decides to first secure his rear by taking care of Zhang Xiu.
A few more items are at the shop now. Equip all your best gear on Dian Wei and buy a lot of healing items. You only get 9 people for this battle which includes Cao Cao and Dian Wei. Pick your people and move out…or not. Jia Xu comes in and tells you that Zhang Xiu surrenders. In the next scene you’ll get another red-blue choice. If you picked the red choice, Cao Cao decides to have some fun with one of the castle women. Zhang Xiu gets pissed off and Hu Che Er and Jia Xu help him launch an ambush. You’ll be thrown into battle.
Battle 11: Dian Wei’s Stand
Conditions for Victory: Move Cao Cao to the escape point within 20 turns!
Enemies: 9 Soldiers, 5 Archers, Hu Che Er (Monk), Jia Xu (Status Mage), Zhang Xiu (Cavalry)
Rewards: 1500 Gold
Special Items: Flying Dragon Robe (kill Hu Che Er), Phoenix Robe (finish battle without saving Dian Wei)
Cao Ang doesn’t last long as Hu Che Er quickly kills him. If you want to save Dian Wei, then this fight will be incredibly difficult. You’ll only have five officers here (Cao Cao, Dian Wei, and the first three officers you picked for deployment), while you’re surrounded by fire and the enemy. Dian Wei is at the east gate, and is pretty much cut off from the rest of the army. Note that if Dian Wei dies here, it’s permanent. Have Dian Wei move away from the east gate and towards the south gate, with the other officers helping him. Move Cao Cao out the west gate to make Cao An Min show up as help. Once Cao Cao reaches the escape point, Cao Hong and the rest of your troops will arrive at the same area. You’ll have the option of retreating or going back to save Dian Wei. If you leave, Dian Wei will die; but if you stay, you’ll need to get him to the escape spot. Have your slower forces move to the west gate to divert attention while your faster forces move around to the south, where Dian Wei should be. Keep him healed and kill any soldiers in his way so he can run to the river. Once he’s across, he’ll escape and you’re done. If you can, try and kill Hu Che Er during the fight for his robe.
Staying low level: If you don’t care about Dian Wei, just move Cao Cao to the exit and leave. If you want to save him, use the same strategy as above, but don’t attack with your diversionary group and only have your escort group kill soldiers that are blocking Dian Wei’s way. Dian Wei should be healing every turn.
Between battles: If Dian Wei died there will be a monument for him that Cao Cao mourns at for a bit. Cao Cao leaves Wan behind and considers his options. He decides to attack Yuan Shu, who has proclaimed himself Emperor, and forms a coalition with Liu Bei, Lu Bu, and Sun Ce to defeat him. Pick your units and go.
Battle 12: Yuan Shu
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!/Defeat Yuan Shu within 12 turns!
Enemies: 12 Archers, 8 Soldiers, 4 Bandits, 2 Monks, 2 Catapults, Yuan Shu (Cavalry)
Allies: 2 Bandits, 2 Cavalry, Lu Bu (Special Cavalry), Sun Ce (Ruler), Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1500 Gold, Leaf Fan, Wheel, Class Seal
Special Items: Leaf Fan (finish the battle), Wheel (finish the battle)
An advisor will ask you how you plan to fight the battle. Pick the first option to have 20 turns to kill everyone, or the second option to have 12 turns to kill Yuan Shu. The coalition forces surround the castle (which seems to be in a marsh or something) with Cao Cao up top, Liu Bei on the right, Lu Bu on the left and Sun Ce in the bottom-left corner. Begin moving down to the entrance and taking out the guards there. You’ll notice you can’t just go straight south from here to Yuan Shu, as the water in front of the north gate is too deep. You’ll have to go around to one of the other gates. The east gate is the best bet as Liu Bei’s group is very strong and might even be inside the castle by the time you get there. Move over to Yuan Shu and defeat him. Go kill the rest of the enemies now if you need to. Once you win, you’ll get the money and a few prizes.
Staying low level: Go with the plan to kill Yuan Shu. Ignore the north gate and walk around to the east gate. Help Liu Bei and Zhang Fei clear out the enemies, and make sure to heal them (Guan Yu doesn’t move much for some reason). Then cover them as they enter the middle and kill Yuan Shu.
Between battles: Cao Cao returns to Xuchang, while Liu Bei gets permission from Lu Bu to stay in Xiao Pei. You’ll learn that Li Jue and Guo Si have died while fighting each other. In the council meeting, you’ll get another red-blue choice. With Yuan Shu dealt with, Cao Cao moves back to Wan to get revenge on Zhang Xiu for his night ambush.
Give Liu Ye the Wheel and the Leaf Fan to one of your mages. The Class Seal is an item used to class change at levels 15 and 30; chances are your levels aren’t that high yet, so hang onto it.
Battle 13: Revenge at Wan
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 12 Soldiers, 6 Archers, Jia Xu (Status Mage), Zhang Xiu (Cavalry)
Rewards: 1600 gold, Class Seal (if you win)
Zhang Xiu only starts out with a few more troops than you do. Kill the guards at the center gate and enter the castle through the gate and the holes to the north and south. Ambush troops will appear inside the castle. You’ll have the option to retreat (the escape point is to the northwest past the mountains). If you do, bandits will ambush you when you get close to the escape point, with some cavalry popping up in the south, so be sure to bring an escort. You can also decide to stay and fight. Most of the enemies, other than Zhang Xiu and Jia Xu, are weaker than you are, so keep your people together as you defeat them. Enemy reinforcements will arrive on turn seven, but they’re so far away that you’ll have plenty of time to clean out the castle before they reach you. If you kill everyone inside before the reinforcements reach the castle you’ll win, but if you’re too slow you’ll have to kill them too. Block the entrances so they can’t all get in, and pick them off one by one. When everyone is dead, you’ll get your rewards.
Staying low level: Send Cao Cao and most of your army to the northeast while one of your units enters the castle through the holes in the wall. When the ambush troops appear, choose to retreat and help Cao Cao get to the escape point to win.
Between battles: Zhang Xiu has been defeated for now, so Cao Cao returns to Xuchang. At the same time, Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan are fighting again in the north. Another red-blue choice is in the next scene, but this time blue is the first choice and red is the bottom. Zhang Fei stole some horses from Lu Bu, so he decides to attack Xiao Pei. Cao Cao moves to assist Liu Bei.
The equipment in the shop now has better swords, spears, and bows, so buy some gear for your preferred generals. If you have any level 3 weapons or armor left over, you can sell them for special stat-boosting beans. The type of bean depends on the weapon or armor type being sold. Check the stat-boosting section for specifics.
Battle 14: Rescue at Xiao Pei
Conditions for Victory: Protect Liu Bei/Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 4 Archers, 3 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, 2 Monks, Soldier, Bandit, Attack Mage, Status Mage, Cao Xing (Mounted Archer), Gao Shun (Chariot), Chen Gong (Attack Mage), Zang Ba (Bandit), Wei Xu (Chariot), Song Xian (Cavalry), Zhang Liao (Special Cavalry), Hou Cheng (Cavalry), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry)
Allies: Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1700 Gold
Special Items: Featherless Arrow (kill Zang Ba)
Liu Bei and his brothers are gathered at the southern fotress just west of the city, near Lu Bu and his core group. Xiahou Dun’s force is nearby, with your main army up north at the gate that Chen Gong’s guarding. Gao Shun’s force moves up to Xiahou Dun, and in a duel with Cao Xing, Xiahou Dun gets his eye shot out. You’ll be asked whether you want to protect Liu Bei; first choice will make the victory conditions protect Liu Bei and second will make it defeat all enemies. If you pick the second choice Mi Zhu will open the castle gate and let Liu Bei inside, and he’ll also do this if you pick the first choice and Liu Bei is defeated. Go ahead and pick the first option, Liu Bei can hold out for a few turns on his own and Guan Yu and Zhang Fei can easily kill some of Lu Bu’s group before they fall. If you’re defending Liu Bei, see if you can get Cao Cao down to his position and he’ll give you a Class Seal. Have Xiahou Dun’s group retreat north and meet up with your main army. While doing this, move your main army over to the gate and kill off Chen Gong. Now have someone strong, like Xu Chu, stand at the gate and hold back the enemy, with some archer support if possible, while you kill off Gao Shun’s force. Zhang Liao (and Chen Gong, if you ignored the gate) will start moving on the enemy’s fourth turn. If Liu Bei dies, Lu Bu’s group will move north along the east side, so both he and Zhang Liao will have to go through your unit guarding the gate. Defeat the enemy as they come and you should be able to kill everyone before time runs out.
Staying low level: Again, you have to kill everyone so this can be difficult, although Liu Bei can help you out by taking some EXP. Try to keep him alive as long as you can. Remember to spread the EXP around for your lower-level people.
Between battles: Lu Bu returns to Xuzhou, takes Diao Chan and retreats to Xia Pi. Cao Cao and Liu Bei continue the attack on Lu Bu. You should probably upgrade your equipment now if you haven’t already, and give Xu Chu the Featherless Arrow (only Bandits can equip it). Go ahead and deploy everyone for the next battle.
Battle 15: Seige of Xia Pi
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 20 turns!
Enemies: 8 Archers, 7 Soldiers, 2 Bandits, 2 Catapults, Monk, Hou Cheng (Cavalry), Wei Xu (Chariot), Song Xian (Cavalry), Gao Shun (Chariot), Zhang Liao (Special Cavalry), Chen Gong (Attack Mage), Diao Chan (Songstress), Lu Bu (Special Cavalry)
Allies: Liu Bei (Ruler), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Sun Qian (Archer)
Rewards: 1800 Gold, Class Seal
Special Items: Horse (kill Hou Cheng), Shield (kill Gao Shun), Mage’s Hat (kill Chen Gong), Lu Bu’s Halberd (kill Lu Bu)
Wow, check out that snow…Your army’s split into three groups, at north, west, and east, with Liu Bei’s group at the southern gate. Move forward and clear out the enemy. Liu Bei’s group is attacking the weakest gate, so they’ll have it clear rather quickly. Press on to the gates yourself and kill the enemy. Note that the snow prevents you from using fire magic, although you can use water magic on any enemies standing in snow. Xiahou Dun can have a duel with Wei Xu, which will eliminate him, so do that if you want. Xiahou Yuan can also duel Song Xian, Cao Cao can duel Hou Cheng, and just for fun, move Cao Cao next to Diao Chan and they’ll have a duel too. You shouldn’t have too many problems here. Lu Bu, Chen Gong, Hou Cheng, and Gao Shun will each drop items when they die. Kill everyone here (even Diao Chan) and you’ll be done.
Staying low level: You don’t have much choice when it comes to killing the gate guards. Try and trigger the duels so you won’t have to take that EXP from higher level enemies. Liu Bei’s group will easily reach the inside of the castle, though, so he’ll likely take a few enemies off your hands once inside. Try to keep the brothers healthy if you can and they’ll mop up.
Between battles: Lu Bu pleads for his life, but Cao Cao has him executed. He lets Diao Chan live, though. Zhang Liao asks to be executed like Lu Bu, but Cao Cao decides to add him to his army. You’ll have a short chat with Xun Yu in the garden as Chapter 1 ends.

Chapter 2: Battle for Hebei
A quick red-blue choice with Liu Bei. Yuan Shu attempts to flee north to his brother’s territory, but Cao Cao sends out Liu Bei to intercept him and Yuan Shu dies. In the meantime, Liu Ye is sent to Wan to talk with Jia Xu. Zhang Xiu surrenders, for real this time. Jia Xu enters Cao Cao’s service. Cao Cao learns of the Jade Belt plot, which Liu Bei was a part of, and swears to get Liu Bei.
Note: Sometime during this chapter, you’ll probably reach level 15 with several of your units. Once at that level, you can upgrade your class using the Class Seal item. Simply use the item in battle as you would a normal consumable.
You’ll notice that Zhang Liao, Jia Xu, and even Diao Chan are in your army now. Deploy for battle when you’re ready.
Battle 16: Capturing Xiao Pei
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Guan Yu within 25 turns!
Enemies: 8 Soldiers, 8 Cavalry, 3 Mounted Archers, 2 Archers, Catapult, Mi Zhu (Mounted Archer), Jian Yong (Archer), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Liu Bei (Ruler), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Sun Qian (Archer)
Rewards: 1900 Gold
Guan Yu is holding the city across the map and he’s your target for victory here. Jian Yong and Mi Zhu are manning a smaller outpost to your right, so go attack them. Once you kill Mi Zhu (or approach the base of the mountain south of the bridges), Liu Bei and Zhang Fei will arrive to the south and will head for your position, so use a few units to block the bridge while you finish off the outpost. Quickly kill off Liu Bei and Zhang Fei before they can do too much damage. After you kill Liu Bei, Cao Cao will note that Guan Yu is alone and you’ll have a choice; the first choice changes the victory condition to reaching Guan Yu and the second changes it to defeating him. Either way, Guan Yu and his cavalry will now leave the city and move toward you. If you picked the first choice, Guan Yu takes a few turns to run over to where Liu Bei and Zhang Fei were. Wait for Guan Yu to reach you and then just surround him and kill him. Zhang Liao can have a duel with Guan Yu if you want to see that.
Staying low level: Ignore Mi Zhu’s fort and just go south along the river to Xiao Pei. When Liu Bei comes out, kill him and Zhang Fei so Guan Yu will exit the city. Surround him when he gets close and kill him.
Between battles: Guan Yu is captured and brought forth to Cao Cao. You’ll get another red-blue choice. He agrees to serve you until he finds out where Liu Bei’s gone. Liu Bei happens to have run away north and joined up with Yuan Shao. There will be several scenes involving Guan Yu, such as when Cao Cao gives him Red Hare. After a few more scenes you’ll learn that Cao Cao and Yuan Shao will be fighting each other. The shop in the camp has more items now, including the +80 HP item and the Class Seals, so stock up and move out for battle.
Battle 17: Yan Liang
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 9 Cavalry, 4 Mounted Archers, 2 Soldiers, Healing Mage, Status Mage, Yan Liang (Cavalry), Ju Shou (Attack Mage), Yuan Shao (Ruler)
Allies: Guan Yu (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 1900 Gold
Special Items: Bean Bag (kill Yan Liang)
Yuan Shao’s army is camped along the northern bank and Yan Liang is guarding the north bridge. Some generic soldiers try to take him on…yeah, that didn’t work out too well. You’ll have a choice of whether to send additional soldiers to the west or north, so pick the one you think needs the men (or woman, if you’re using Diao Chan) and send Cao Cao’s group to the other bridge. Yan Liang won’t be moving from his spot, therefore sending them west might be best. Notice that Yan Liang has some type of auto-potion ability where he’ll instantly recover 30 HP after getting hit (including counters), so don’t bother fighting him just yet. Have a couple of soldiers wait near him while you send the main army across the west bridge, defeating each squad as they reach you. Guan Yu will arrive on turn three near the castle and will move north to duel Yan Liang, killing him off. Yan Liang will drop his Bean Bag upon death. Have any soldiers who were waiting nearby move north with Guan Yu to help him attack Yuan Shao’s now lightly defended flank while your main army finishes off the enemy in their area. You might want to watch out for Ju Shou (the attack mage) when you reach Yuan Shao, but other than him there are no real threats. Gang up on Yuan Shao and finish him off, then kill any enemies you might not have killed yet for the win.
Staying low level: Another defeat all enemies battle. Just help Guan Yu stay healthy while he kills the enemies, and remember to keep your levels balanced.
Between battles: Yuan Shao and Wen Chou get mad at Liu Bei since it was Guan Yu that killed Yan Liang. At the camp, Cao Cao praises Guan Yu and continues his advance against Yuan Shao. The shop now sells new armor and robes. You might want to give someone the pouch that Yan Liang dropped in order to get the auto-potion ability, although note it does use items from your supply. Deploy and move out for the next battle.
Battle 18: Wen Chou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 9 Cavalry, 5 Mounted Archers, 5 Soldiers, Archer, Healing Mage, Wen Chou (Cavalry), Guo Tu (Status Mage), Shen Pei (Attack Mage), Ju Shou (Attack Mage), Yuan Shao (Ruler)
Allies: Wooden Oxen, Guan Yu (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 2000 gold
Special Items: Silver Mirror Shield (kill Wen Chou)
Cao Cao and Guan Yu will talk here and you’ll have a choice of plans again. The first option will have Guan Yu lure Wen Chou and the two enemies close to him south between the forest and the mountain, where your troops will ambush them and the two enemies will become confused. The second option will create some wooden decoys which will lure all of Wen Chou’s group to the same spot, whereupon your troops will ambush them and all of the enemies in the group except Wen Chou become confused. Pick the plan you want, either way you’ll quickly dispatch those enemies. Wen Chou will try and retreat north to his tent, so try and slow him down until Guan Yu can reach him and kill him in a duel. If you picked the second plan and the wooden decoy that Wen Chou left alive makes it back to the city, you’ll get an item. Guo Tu’s group will start moving on the enemy’s third turn Once you’ve cleared out Wen Chou’s army, sweep south and free up the bridge for your other squad to move north if they’re still being held up. Otherwise, help Guan Yu defeat all the cavalry coming your way before you once again gang up on Yuan Shao and beat him, along with anyone else still alive.
Staying low level: Use the second plan so all the enemies are confused, then clear a path for Guan Yu to reach Wen Chou. Have your weaker people kill the confused enemies remaining, then help Guan Yu raid Yuan Shao’s camp.
Between battles: Yuan Shao is pissed that Guan Yu killed Wen Chou too. Liu Bei decides to send Sun Qian to tell Guan Yu where he is. Zhang Liao learns that Guan Yu is getting ready to leave and tells Cao Cao about it. You’ll get another red-blue choice. Cao Cao doesn’t want to lose Guan Yu, but he upholds their agreement and lets him leave (the first choice has them meeting in the field while the second choice is a formal send-off in the court). Guan Yu goes off to be with Liu Bei in Ru Nan. You’ll also learn that Sun Ce has died and Sun Quan has taken his place as head of Wu. Yuan Shao’s advisors fight amongst themselves and so Yuan Shao is indecisive as to what to do, and he throws Ju Shou in jail after Tian Feng slanders him. Cao Cao marches for Guan Du in order to deal Yuan Shao a decisive blow. Stock up if you need to, this is a big one. Deploy your best troops and go.
Battle 19: Guan Du
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Yuan Shao within 25 turns!
Enemies: 13 Soldiers, 4 Archers, 4 Cavalry, 3 Monks, 2 Mounted Archers, 2 Bandits, 2 Catapults, Gao Lan (Mounted Archer), Zhang He (Mounted Archer), Chun Yuqiong (Soldier), Guo Tu (Status Mage), Shen Pei (Attack Mage), Yuan Tan (Cavalry), Yuan Shang (Cavalry), Feng Ji (Healing Mage), Yuan Shao (Ruler)
Rewards: 2100 Gold, Golden Helmet (kill Chun Yuqiong), Glove (kill Gao Lan)
Special Items: Poison Catapult (complete the battle)
You’ll hear the "epic" music here for the first time. Xu You will move from Yuan Shao’s main camp all the way to your camp, where he tells Cao Cao about the supply camp that a drunken Chun Yuqiong is guarding. You’ll have three options here; the first and second appear to do the same thing, which is remove Xu You from the battle and cause Yuan Shao not to move. The third choice, on the other hand, sends Xu You back to Yuan Shao’s camp and causes Yuan Shao to send large forces toward his supply camp and to your camp. Either way you’re given 25 turns to kill Yuan Shao. I’m assuming here you pick the first choice. Yuan Shao won’t move for two turns, so make a block of troops to the northwest of your camp to defend while you send a smaller squad northeast to raid the supply camp. Yuan Shao will order Zhang He and Gao Lan to attack you on turn three, and Guo Tu and Shen Pei begin moving on their fifth turn. They’ll reach your block of troops in a couple of turns, so eliminate them as they approach. If Xu Chu is in your defense group, have him stand next to Zhang He; they’ll duel and Zhang He will retreat. Meanwhile your raiders should kill Chun Yuqiong and the other two soldiers in the supply camp. After you kill them, all of Yuan Shao’s troops will have their defense reduced. If Cao Cao is next to Gao Lan at this time, he’ll kill Gao Lan for you. Your raiders should move on to the mountain pass and clear that out, then wait for a bit. Yuan Shao will send a lot of his troops south to your main army, leaving his camp easier to invade. Yuan Shao will freak out once you enter his camp and most of his troops will move to defend him, including some of the ones attacking your defense force. Mop up whoever stays behind down south and have your forces converge on the camp. Destroy anyone who gets in your way and terminate Yuan Shao yet again. You’ll get a new catapult as reward.
Staying low level: Bring Zhang Liao and the Xiahou’s, along with all your mages. Have your cavalry move north to raid the camp while you form a wall with your soldiers. Have the mages pick off the enemies since they’re probably lower-level, and make sure to have Xu Chu duel Zhang He so you don’t get his EXP. You should be able to defeat Gao Lan’s cavalry group before Guo Tu and Shen Pei can reach you. Once the camp is secured, move west to Yuan Shao and assassinate him for the win. You’ll probably get a lot of EXP in this level, but don’t worry; the next level will make up for it.
Between battles: Zhang He switches sides and joins Wei. Ju Shou, who was in prison, is also brought forth but refuses to join. Yuan Shao flees from the battlefield, and has Tian Feng executed. In a meeting his sons and advisors continue to argue. Cao Cao moves to pursue. The next battle is an easy one, so bring your lower level people so they can level up.
Battle 20: Cao Cao’s Pursuit
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 8 Cavalry, 4 Mounted Archers, 4 Soldiers, 4 Archers, Yuan Tan (Cavalry), Yuan Xi (Cavalry), Yuan Shang (Cavalry), Yuan Shao (Ruler)
Rewards: 2100 Gold
Special Items: Wind God’s Shield
Yuan Shao’s army is in a long line through the canyon while Cao Cao, Xu Chu, and Cheng Yu are at a dry riverbed to the far south. Xu Chu starts off by running right up to Yuan Shao’s rear guard. Move Xu Chu back towards Cao Cao and, like idiots, Yuan Shao’s entire army will follow him back. If Xu Chu gets hit, have him heal himself as he returns south. Cao Cao will get worried, but pick the first choice and don’t move. Anyway, once Xu Chu is close to Cao Cao, your party will spring up in the forests along the canyon, confusing large parts of Yuan Shao’s army. Go to town on them, and make sure you kill Yuan Shao so he’ll drop his Wind God’s Shield (you may need to put your strongest people in those spots to kill him fast enough). If any enemies lose confusion, they’ll ignore your army and flee north to the area around the tent, which is their escape point and lets them leave the battlefield. Just slaughter the enemy, they won’t bother fighting back. Make sure to let your lower level people get in some kills so they won’t fall behind, and have fun with this easy battle.
Staying low level: Effortless. Just have Xu Chu make it back to Cao Cao so the ambush goes off, then wait for the enemies to flee. Kill Yuan Shao if you want his Wind God’s Shield; otherwise, just sit back and wait until they’re all gone.
Between battles: Yuan Shao dies from his injuries and his sons mourn his death. Cao Cao is sad to hear that his old friend has died, but he presses on to conquer the north. However, Liu Bei is causing trouble in Ru Nan, so Cao Cao moves south to deal with him. Liu Bei hires some old Scarves officers, Liu Pi and Gong Du, to help him out.
Battle 21: Ru Nan
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Liu Bei within 25 turns!
Enemies: 6 Soldiers, 4 Bandits, 3 Supply Oxen, 2 Archers, Catapult, Gong Du (Bandit), Liu Pi (Bandit), Mi Fang (Mounted Archer), Sun Qian (Archer), Zhou Cang (Bandit), Guan Ping (Cavalry), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Liu Bei (Ruler)
Rewards: 2200 gold
Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun are camped out in the crater-like valley in the middle of the map. More Liu Bei forces are in the southwest city, where one of the officers leads the wooden oxen out the east gate. Gong Du leaves the city with his supplie train. Zhang Liao will ask how you want the ambushes to proceed. The first choice will put three soldiers near the oxen and six near the city; the second choice puts six near the oxen and three near the city; and the third choice calls off the ambushes and just puts everyone at your starting camp. The first choice is obviously the best, so pick it unless you want a challenge. Whatever your choice, your mission here is to kill Liu Bei. If you went ahead with the ambushes, Xiahou Yuan can have a duel with Gong Du and will kill him Indiana Jones style (you’ll know what I mean when you see it). Zhang He can also have a duel with Liu Pi. Take out the oxen for some free items. Your city-taking force should break through the north gate pretty easily. Guan Yu will lead a squad to help the city while Zhang Fei will try to assist the oxen, leaving Liu Bei’s camp at half strength; good news for your main camp, who should be heading that way. Zhang Liao and Zhao Yun can have a duel if they meet up. Your ambush forces might have some problems, seeing as they’ll have strong officers coming after them, but you should be able to use your main force to easily get into Liu Bei’s camp and kill him. Liu Bei might try to run away to the southwest city, so follow him down there and finish him off.
Staying low level: Pick the first choice, and kill off Gong Du and Liu Pi with the duels. You can raid the oxen too if you want. Wait for Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to move south and then have your main camp raid Liu Bei from behind. You’ll still have to deal with Zhao Yun though. Don’t let Liu Bei retreat to the city, or you’ll have a hell of a time killing him.
Between battles: Liu Bei and Zhang Fei retreat while Guan Yu stays behind to hold off Cao Cao. You’ll get another red-blue choice. Cao Cao agrees to let Guan Yu go as thanks for his service, and Liu Bei goes to Jingzhou to stay with Liu Biao. Cao Cao marches back north to assault the Yuan’s at Liyang. Stock up if you need to and move out.
Battle 22: Skirmish at Liyang
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Yuan Tan and Yuan Xi within 25 turns!
Enemies: 18 Archers, 11 Soldiers, 7 Catapults, 4 Monks, Guo Tu (Status Mage), Feng Ji (Healing Mage), Yuan Tan (Cavalry), Yuan Xi (Cavalry)
Rewards: 2200 Gold, Class Seal
Special Items: Seven Star Sword (kill Feng Ji, even if he escapes and returns he’ll drop it)
Yuan Tan’s got his group guarding the castle while Yuan Xi is far north in a camp; you’ll need to kill both to win the battle. If you’ve been leveling up a lot then this might be your first battle with upgraded enemies. You can avoid this by bringing some lower level people to change the level average. Feng Ji will make a beeline to the north end of the battlefield, where he’ll retreat. It’s hard to stop him since he moves so fast. Focus on the castle here and kill everyone inside. Yuan Tan and Guo Tu will try and flee the castle once you’re inside, so send some troops to block the north gate before you enter. Then finish off any enemies that moved south from the camps just north of you. A few turns after Feng Ji retreats he’ll return with some reinforcements up north; pick the second option to keep fighting and they’ll move south toward you. Move north a little and let them come to you, taking them out one by one. Feng Ji drops his sword when you kill him. On turn 15 Shen Pei shows up with even more reinforcements. If you’re starting to get worn out by now, use a couple of strong troops to block the area between the walls while you attack Yuan Xi’s area. Yuan Shang shows up on turn 20 with yet more reinforcements for even more fun, so quickly kill Yuan Xi before you run out of time. Once he’s dead, what’s left of the Yuan family’s army will retreat and you’ll be done.
If you’re playing the game at least your third time through, you can make this battle easier: "It’s possible to stop Feng Ji, but you need to have beaten the game at least twice and choose to get all the special items. Have a mounted archer equip Di Lu and then have a healer increase his movement and charge after Feng Ji. This’ll stop the reinforcements from appearing. Again, this is only possible when you play the game a third time (and provided you got all the treasures). " Thanks to Terranigma Freak for the tip.
Staying low level: Kill Feng Ji if you can, so you won’t have to deal with all those reinforcements. Send some of your troops to the castle’s north gate, then enter the west gate so you can scare Yuan Tan out to where your army can kill him. Then just move north to Yuan Xi’s camp and break through to him so you can kill him too.
Between battles: Yuan Tan and Guo Tu retreat. Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang begin fighting over who Yuan Shao’s successor is, and Yuan Tan leaves Yuan Shang behind to go to Bei Ping. Cao Pi comes of age and joins your forces, and Xin Pi comes to help Cao Cao on Yuan Tan’s behalf. You’ll get another red-blue choice here (this time, blue is the first choice and red is the bottom one). Cao Cao moves forward to Ye, the Yuan’s main city.
Battle 23: Attack on Ye
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 10 Archers, 8 Soldiers, 4 Monks, 4 Catapults, Ju Gu (Archer), Shen Pei (Attack Mage)
Allies: 2 Bandits, Xin Pi (Healing Mage)
Rewards: 2300 Gold, Class Seal
Special Items: Fire God’s Fan (defend Xin Pi until he can open the castle’s inner gate, then kill Shen Pei)
Shen Pei will close off the castle gates so you can’t get at him. You’ll have a choice here on where to attack first, the castle or the fort; pick the first choice and Xin Pi will move toward the castle. Guo Jia isn’t feeling too well, it seems…anyway, start moving towards the castle. Xin Pi will move over to the castle’s south gate and convinces one of the soldiers there to open it. Help protect Xin Pi until he can reach the inner gate, but make sure you leave at least one enemy in the outer section alive. Watch out for the upgraded catapults, they hit in a cross effect attack (target and all directly adjacent targets) so spread out until you’ve demolished them. If you got Xin Pi to open the inner gate, kill Shen Pei so he’ll drop his fan; this will also open the outer east gate. When they’re all dead leave the castle and attack the fort; if the bandits are still alive they’ll tend to stay in the castle for a few turns. Once you’ve killed a few enemies, Yuan Shang’s army arrives across the river from you. Get inside the fort and guard the entrance while you finish off any enemies still inside. Yuan Shang’s forces shouldn’t be too much of a hassle for you to take care of. Ju Gu and his group aren’t too tough either so plow through them for the victory.
Note that if you kill all the enemies in the outer castle before Xin Pi can open the inner gate, Shen Pei will light the inner castle on fire, killing himself and his other soldiers. You won’t have to kill them, but you can’t get the Fire God’s Fan this way.
Staying low level: Ignore Xin Pi and attack the fort. Get inside when Yuan Shang shows up and fend off his forces. Now go to the castle and kill all the outer enemies so Shen Pei will burn himself up.
Between battles: Cao Pi runs in first to get his share of the bounty. You’ll get another red-blue choice. Guo Jia shows signs of sickness in the meeting but shrugs it off. With Yuan Shang driven back, Cao Cao cancels his alliance with Yuan Tan and begins his attack on Bei Ping.
Battle 24: Seige of Bei Ping
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Yuan Tan within 25 turns!
Enemies: 12 Soldiers, 8 Archers, 8 Bandits, 6 Catapults, Guo Tu (Status Mage), Xin Ping (Catapult), Yuan Tan (Cavalry)
Rewards: 2400 Gold, Class Seal, Blue Hat (kill Guo Tu), Glove (kill Xin Ping)
Special Items: Golden Armor (kill Yuan Tan)
Another snow map. Yuan Tan has got some serious defense here, including lots of annoying catapults. Your army will split up to break through the gates. Remember to leave your soldiers scattered to avoid letting the catapults do too much damage. When you kill one of the units guarding a gate, four more enemies will pop up in the woods near that gate; this goes for both gates, so watch out. After getting rid of a few more gate guards, Yuan Tan will open the west gate and the enemy will swarm you. You’ll get another choice here; the first option will keep the battle as is, while the second choice opens both gates and eliminates Xin Ping from battle, as well as causes Yuan Shang to charge forward. The third choice will send Xin Ping into the inner castle, opens the south gate, and eliminates four enemies from the battlefield. I went with the third choice as it’s easiest. Guo Tu will drop some gear when you kill him. Hold out until Yuan Tan reaches you, surround him and slay him. You’ll get some armor as reward.
Staying low level: Pick the second choice so Yuan Tan will come to you, then kill him when he gets close.
Between battles: Yuan Tan is dead, but Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi continue fleeing north to the desert. Cao Cao follows them north. Zhang Liao and Guo Jia volunteer to attack the fleeing enemy. You’ll only get seven people on the next battle.
Battle 25: Guo Jia’s Fate

Chapter 3: Birth of the Three Kingdoms
Cao Cao’s aged during all the fighting, as you can see by his new picture. Now that the north is conquered, Cao Cao and his advisors ponder where to go next. You’ll get another red-blue choice during the meeting with Cao Zhi. Cao Cao decides to move south to Jingzhou, where Liu Bei is guarding Xinye for Liu Biao, and sends Li Dian and Cao Ren to fight him. They’re defeated, though, and report to Cao Cao that Liu Bei had a brilliant strategist on his side. Cheng Yu knows it’s Xu Shu, so he tricks Xu Shu into coming to Xuchang by forging a letter from Xu Shu’s mother. Xu Shu’s mother is disappointed that he fell for such a simple ploy and kills herself (bummer…). Too bad that Liu Bei already found a new strategist, Zhuge Liang. Another red-blue choice comes up (this one is blue first and red second). Yu Jin and Li Dian go back to Xinye, with Xiahou Dun this time. Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei make plans for how to meet this threat.
No Cao Cao for this battle, Xiahou Dun’s in charge. Restock, pick your people and move out.
Battle 26: Bo Wang Slope
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Zhuge Liang/Move Xiahou Dun to the escape point within 25 turns!
Enemies: 10 Bandits, 2 Archers, Cavalry, Guan Ping (Cavalry), Liu Feng (Soldier), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Liu Bei (Ruler), Mi Fang (Mounted Archer), Mi Zhu (Mounted Archer), Zhuge Liang (Master Strategist)
Allies: 4 Wooden Oxen
Rewards: 2500 Gold
Special Items: Zhuge Liang’s Robe (kill Zhuge or bring him to critical and he’ll retreat)
Xiahou Dun and Cao Ren will move forward following Liu Bei’s group. You have the option of having the rest of the army wait behind or follow you into the forest. After you’ve moved, the trap is sprung and several ambush parties appear and burn the forest around you. You’ll need to get Xiahou Dun back north to the escape point to win. Move your main army down to open up a path through the enemies so Xiahou Dun can get through. You may want to leave a couple of people down south to hold off the enemy while Xiahou Dun runs north. When he’s in the clear, your army will retreat and you’ll win. You can also play offense here, by moving your forces south to Zhuge Liang’s fort. You can win the battle by killing him. He’ll drop a robe as a reward if you defeat him.
Staying low level: Have your army move into the forest with you so they’ll distract the enemy. Just kill who you need to in order to get Xiahou Dun back north across the river.
Between battles: Xiahou Dun’s army returns to Xu Chang to report their failure. Another red-blue choice here. Cao Cao decides to go to battle himself and marches south. Liu Biao quickly surrenders, causing Liu Bei to flee south to Chang Ban. You’ll meet Wen Pin and the other Xiahou’s before you head off to battle.
Battle 27: Chang Ban
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Liu Bei within 25 turns!
Enemies: 2 Soldiers, 2 Cavalry, Mounted Archer, Jian Yong (Archer), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Mi Fang (Mounted Archer), Mi Zhu (Mounted Archer), Zhang Fei (Special Cavalry), Liu Bei (Ruler), 8 Civilians
Allies: Wen Pin (Cavalry), Xiahou En (Cavalry), Xiahou Jie (Cavalry)
Rewards: 2500 Gold, Class Seal
Special Items: Six Arts of War (kill Mi Fang), Three Ploys (kill Mi Zhu), Silver Armor/Sword of Light (after Xiahou En duels Zhao Yun, defeat him and pick the first choice for the armor or the second choice for the sword)
Liu Bei’s army will move south from their starting position, except for Zhao Yun who moves north to the village to look for Lady Mi and Liu Chan. Zhang Fei waits at the Chang Ban bridge. It’ll just be Xiahou Dun, Zhang He, and the Cai’s when the battle begins. Move south and get in some hits on Zhao Yun. Xiahou En will run over to him and they’ll duel, which ends with Zhao Yun killing him. On turn three your main army will arrive. If Zhao Yun gets past the bridge he’ll tell Liu Bei about Lady Mi’s death, but you can kill him before he gets away and you’ll have a choice of what to do with him; the first option will get you his Silver Armor, while the second option will have him give back the Sword of Light. As this is the only way to get the Sword of Light, I suggest you pick the second choice. By this point Liu Bei will be too far to catch up, but you can cut him off. If you look just to the right of your starting area, you’ll see a shallow section of river you can cross. You can move some people through here and be able to meet up with Liu Bei. Block his path so he can’t get away. Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang will arrive with reinforcements once Liu Bei gets to a certain point, and if you can kill them before you kill Liu Bei, you’ll get another class change item. Finish off Liu Bei when you’re done.
Staying low level: Easy, just go straight right across the shallows and ambush Liu Bei when he gets to your position. Your allies will just waste time killing civilians, so don’t count on them for help.
Between battles: Liu Bei flees to Jiangxia, and he sends Zhuge Liang to Wu to propose an alliance with Sun Quan. After some debate, Sun Quan agrees and moves to Chi Bi to face Cao Cao’s massive navy. The Wei troops, used to the plains of the north, are not used to fighting on ships, but Pang Tong comes to see Cao Cao and suggests chaining the ships so the soldiers won’t get seasick. Another red-blue choice for you here (blue is top and red is bottom). If you saved Guo Jia he’ll have recovered and you’ll be using him in the next battle, otherwise you’ll be using Cheng Yu. Guo Jia will inform you that chaining the ships would cause the whole navy to burn if fire was used; if he’s dead, you’ll get no such warning and some generic officers will chain the ships. Assemble your army and begin the battle of Chi Bi.
Battle 28: Chi Bi
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies/Move Cao Cao to the escape point within 25 turns!
Enemies: 7 Pirates, Han Dang (Mounted Archer), Chen Wu (Archer), Jiang Qin (Pirate), Xu Sheng (Mounted Archer), Ding Feng (Monk), Dong Xi (Soldier), Pan Zheng (Soldier), Ling Tong (Cavalry), Gan Ning (Pirate), Lu Meng (Attack Mage), Taishi Ci (Cavalry), Cheng Pu (Cavalry), Zhou Tai (Pirate), Huang Gai (Cavalry), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Lu Xun (Strategist), Zhou Yu (Strategist), Sun Quan (Ruler)
Allies: 8 Soldiers, 8 Archers
Rewards: 2500 Gold
Special Items: Li Guan’s Bow (kill Chen Wu), Blue Pouch Book (kill Huang Gai), Dragon Scale Armor (kill Han Dang), Peaceful Technique Book (kill Zhou Yu), Twin Staffs (defeat all enemies)
This battle will be different depending on whether or not Guo Jia is still alive.
Guo Jia absent: Huang Gai uses the fire attack and your entire fleet is burned thanks to the chains, killing all your allies as well as causing fires across your camp on the north bank. There will also be ambush parties on the left and right banks, led by Ling Tong and Taishi Ci respectively. Sun Quan and his officers will come up from the south near Huang Gai and Zhou Yu will come up from the southeast. You’ll get a choice here; the first two make the victory condition to move Cao Cao to the northwest corner, while the third choice is to proceed with the battle and kill everyone. You could try the third choice for a challenge, although it will be much harder than if you had Guo Jia. Assuming you want to retreat, move to the left and put someone strong (hopefully equiped with the Bean Bag) block the path between the ships while you deal with the left bank’s ambush group. This might take a few turns. Get Cao Cao out of there once you have a chance and send him off to the northwest corner to retreat from the debacle of his invasion.
Guo Jia present: Huang Gai’s fleet will come up from the southwest and his fire boats will cause some damage, but the damage is nowhere near as severe as the above scenario and your allies aren’t killed. There will still be ambush parties on the left and right banks, led by Ling Tong and Taishi Ci respectively. Sun Quan and his officers will come up from the south and Zhou Yu will come up from the southeast. You’ll need to defeat everyone in this battle. Move your forces to the banks to take out the ambush groups while you let your large fleet of friendly forces occupy Sun Quan’s navy. They should be able to live long enough for you to clear out the banks, and might even kill an enemy or two. Get a good setup on the banks and wait for the navy to come out of the water. Much of the fleet will be moving to the east bank, so be very careful with your army on that side. Sun Quan himself will move straight north toward your camp, so put a couple people up there to welcome him. Note that when you attack Han Dang, due to his armor you’ll be depleting his MP before his HP, although you’ll get this armor yourself when you kill him. Make sure you have Zhang Liao duel Huang Gai when he comes close; Zhang Liao will kill him and you’ll get a scroll. Zhou Yu’s book will regenerate his MP each turn; again, you’ll get this item when he dies. Mop up the remains of the Wu army and, just for fun, try to get Guo Jia to kill off Sun Quan. For this history-altering victory, you’ll be given the Twin Staffs.
Between battles: If you won at Chi Bi, skip to just before battle 30. Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang plan to ambush Cao Cao’s fleeing army. Zhuge sends out Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei, but Guan Yu gets angry that he isn’t included. Zhuge decides to have him be the final ambush. At your camp, it’s just Zhang Liao and Cheng Yu with Cao Cao. Restock and begin your retreat. You won’t get to choose who you deploy; the battle starts as soon as you hit the deployment button.
Battle 29: Flight along Hua Rong Dao
Conditions for Victory: Move Cao Cao to the escape point within 25 turns!
Enemies: 5 Pirates, 2 Archers, 2 Bandits, 2 Monks, Lu Meng (Attack Mage), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 2700 Gold
It’s just Cao Cao, Zhang Liao, and Cheng Yu starting out, although Xu Chu and Xu Huang soon join. Lu Meng’s group is right behind you, so get moving. Zhao Yun’s group will ambush you in the forest south of the first village, so keep them occupied while Cao Cao stays moving. You could avoid them by going south around the forest, but then Gan Ning will ambush you with some pirates. From that general area you have two choices, the long path around the south or the snowy valley pass to the north. If you take the snowy pass, Zhang Fei will ambush you with more troops; take the long way around, and Ling Tong will greet you. At this point you’ll probably have to kill some of the enemies in order to pass by, just watch out for the officers. When you finally reach the end, Guan Yu’s group shows up. You have two choices here; the first choice will compel Guan Yu to remember how well Cao Cao treated him before, while the second choice will pit Guan Yu against Cao Cao in a duel. Either way he’ll retreat and you’ll win the battle.
Between battles: Unable to score the decisive victory he desired, Cao Cao returns to Xu Chang and leaves Zhang Liao behind to guard He Fei. Liu Bei begins to reoccupy Southern Jing while Sun Quan goes back to Jian Ye. Sun Quan decides to make his own move to conquest, and marches on He Fei.
It’ll be Zhang Liao in charge this time. Go ahead and spread the wealth from Chi Bi if you got any, and restock if you need to.
Battle 30: He Fei
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 6 Pirates, 6 Archers, 2 Mounted Archers, 2 Bandits, Cavalry, Taishi Ci (Cavalry), Zhang Hong (Status Mage), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Cheng Pu (Cavalry), Sun Quan (Ruler)
Rewards: 2600 Gold, Saddle (kill Cheng Pu)
Special Items: Mirror Armor (kill Taishi Ci), Art of War (kill Zhang Hong)
For once, you’re on defense. This battle will be easier after the troubles you had at Chi Bi. Sun Quan’s squad is near the south gate while Taishi Ci’s larger army is over at the west gate. A few bandits will set fire in the city, and you’ll be asked what to do about the Wu army. For the first option, your troops will line up along the west side of the castle, the gate will open and Taishi Ci’s army will enter, but his front line wil become confused. For the second option, the south gate will open and your army will charge outside, confusing Sun Quan’s front line. Either plan is fine since you have to kill everyone anyway. I went with the first choice. Quickly take out as many confused units as you can. Taishi Ci will drop his armor when you kill him, Cheng Pu drops his horse when he dies, and Zhang Hong will drop a scroll. As usual, clear out enemies inside the castle and then block off the gate so the enemies have to come through you. It’s okay if Zhang Liao dies here, you won’t get a game over, so don’t feel you must keep him alive at all costs. Finish off everyone and you’ve completed the battle.
Between battles: Cao Cao talks to Cao Zhi again. You’ll learn that Wu and Shu are fighting over land in Southern Jing, and Zhou Yu has passed away due to battle wounds and stress. There’s another red-blue choice here (blue is top and red is bottom). Ma Teng arrives and speaks to the Emperor. After this is another red-blue choice. Cao Cao has Ma Teng executed in order to remove him as a problem. His son, Ma Chao, is not happy to hear this and sets out from Xi Liang on a campaign to the capital. Cao Cao moves his army to engage him at Tong Gate.
Battle 31: Tong Gate
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Han Sui within 25 turns!
Enemies: 6 Soldiers, 4 Chariots, 4 Tiger Tamers, 4 Archers, 2 Catapults, Healing Mage, Pang De (Soldier), Ma Dai (Chariot), Ma Chao (Chariot), Han Sui (Attack Mage)
Rewards: 2700 Gold, Shield (kill Han Sui)
Ma Chao and friends are down south at their camp while yours is north of the river. You get a choice here again. The first choice will move your advance force south of the river while Ma Chao’s perimeter moves north to meet you, as well as cause a spirit to freeze your camp walls. The second choice appears to do nothing. Your target here is not Ma Chao himself, but Han Sui in Ma Chao’s camp. Have your advance force pull back to your fort; Ma Chao’s army will follow you up there. On turn four your ambush will appear in the southeast forest. Move them over to the poorly guarded fort and take out Han Sui. Note that if Xu Chu meets Ma Chao, they will have two duels back to back. Once you’re inside Ma Chao’s camp, Han Sui will tell the others and enemies will move to protect him, including the gate guards. Kill off the enemy if they bother you, but keep hitting Han Sui until he dies. If you manage to take out Ma Chao’s group, send your northern people down to the camp to help out. Han Sui will drop a shield when he dies.
Note: The storylines split here. Keep reading for the Red path or skip down to the next post for the Blue path.
Between battles: Ma Chao, Ma Dai, and Pang De retreat and go to stay with Zhang Lu in Han Zhong. Cao Cao and his advisors deliberate the current situation, and Sima Yi joins your army. You’ll learn that Liu Bei, on pretense of protecting Yizhou, moved his army into the region and captured Cheng Du, replacing the region’s governer Liu Zhang, although he lost Pang Tong in the campaign. Sun Quan and Liu Bei’s relations have been strained due to Liu Bei’s refusal to return Jingzhou. Cao Cao decides to contain the threat of Shu by moving to invade Han Zhong.
The shops have finally updated. Buy some new gear if you can afford it and restock.
Battle 32: Han Zhong
You’ll be up in the northwest here, blocked off by two gates held by Zhang Lu’s troops. Zhang Lu himself is your target here, hiding down in the southeast castle. Move over to the eastern gate (the enemy won’t move) and start killing the enemy. Remember to keep your soldiers staggered so the catapults can only hit one at a time. Send your excess soldiers down to the south gate, just so they have something to do. Pang De will arrive on turn 5 with enemy reinforcements. Try and take the fort (guarded by Beast Trainers) before he can reach you so you’ll have a defensive advantage. Watch out for the bears since they can inflict the Don’t Move status if they hit. Let the chariots come to you and take them all out, as well as Pang De. Xu Chu and Pang De will have a duel if they meet up. When you kill Pang De, he and Cao Cao will have a long talk before he dies (the game changes your victory condition here; it’s now just reach Zhang Lu). Keep going east to the castle, break through one of the gates (remember to scatter until you neutralize the catapults) and move Cao Cao next to Zhang Lu. Zhang Lu will make this take a little longer since he’ll be healing wounded units, but it’s not too bad. When you meet Zhang Lu, he’ll talk with you and cough up a sword before ending the battle.
Between battles: Cao Cao recruits the captured Pang De into the Wei army. At Cheng Du, Liu Bei is told of the invasion, and Zhuge Liang advises to him to repulse the Wei army. On the China map, you’ll see that Liu Bei has moved north, Guan Yu and Lu Su are discussing the future of Jingzhou, and Sun Quan has moved to attack Wei once again. You’ll be in control of Zhang Liao and co. again for the next battle.
Battle 33: Second Defense of He Fei
You’ll be asked here whether you want the troops in the castle to move south when you spring your ambush; pick the first option for them to stay or the second option for them to move into the long, grassy area to the left of your ambush. Either way, Zhang Liao and Li Dian will hide in the water while Yue Jin moves south. Gan Ning and Yue Jin will "duel" and Yue Jin will run back north, bringing Gan Ning’s group with him. Sun Quan’s group will also move north. After Yue Jin moves up far enough Zhang Liao and Li Dian will reappear, confusing all of Gan Ning’s group. Sun Quan is your target for this battle. Quickly kill Gan Ning and Lu Meng before they overcome the confusion, then deal with the rest of the group. Your other soldiers should move down from the castle or, if they’re on the grass, come in from above to help annihilate the enemy (you’ll run into Sun Quan if you try and go around from behind). Ling Tong will arrive on the enemy’s second turn in the south with some reinforcements, but you should easily be able to kill Sun Quan before they can reach your position since he runs right up to you. Defeat him and you’re done. You’ll get a class change item as a trophy.
Between battles: Yue Jin returns to Xu Chang to report the victory, and requests reinforcements. Cao Cao sends the main army down to He Fei to help Zhang Liao.
Battle 34: Ru Xu Kou
Your camp’s to the north, Sun Quan’s is down south, and you’ve got a large river between you. Ling Tong’s fleet is already close to you, so have your officers in the water fight them and move your camp forces down to help out (you can leave Sima Yi in the camp since he has no water magic). You may want to lure them closer north if you can so the enemies on the far bank won’t hit you with magic. The rest of your army led by Pang De will arrive on turn three, in the river to your left. On the enemy’s third turn Sun Quan will order Lu Meng’s group to move forward, so be ready for them. Make sure to move Pang De over to Chen Wu and he’ll kill him in a duel. Dong Xi will give you some armor when he dies, and Chen Wu drops his bow. Begin sending people back to your camp once the river is under control. Gan Ning will appear in the northeast on the enemy’s sixth turn, so you’ll need to defend against his raid. Kill him to get another dragon shirt. Then just go to the south bank and demolish Sun Quan’s camp. Zhang Zhao will retreat when you get to the south bank and returns a few turns later with reinforcements, which will prompt the option to retreat or stay and fight (I retreated). Either way you’ll be done.
Between battles: Cao Cao and Sun Quan both pull back to their captials as the chapter ends.

Chapter 4: End of the Three Kingdoms
Liu Bei begins his invasion of Hanzhong, and Cao Hong returns to Xuchang to request reinforcements. You’ll be controlling Xiahou Yuan for this battle.
Battle 35: Mt. Ding Jun
Huang Zhong and Yan Yan are leading the attack here, just to prove they’re not too old for battle. Zhao Yun, Fa Zheng, Ma Chao, and Wei Yan are also backing them up. You’ll need to kill everyone to win, not just Huang Zhong. Your army is split into seperate camps, which can be confusing, but they’re supplemented by some friendly soldiers at most spots so don’t worry. Ma Chao will have to break through one of your gates in the northwest for him to get to the main battle; you should be able to hold them off, but the magic user in the group will annoy you by casting Confuse a lot. If one of Ma Chao’s men manages to kill one of your gate guards (probably Cao Hong) more forces will arrive in the northwest. Xiahou Yuan’s camp isn’t near any enemies, so send your soldiers there to the other camps as reinforcements. Unless you have a death wish, keep Xiahou Yuan far away from Huang Zhong; they have a duel, where Huang Zhong will permanently kill Xiahou Yuan. Yan Yan will drop a horse when you kill him, and Lei Tong drops a glove. Keep killing as many people down south as you can, since you most likely can’t move north to reach Ma Chao. Once Ma Chao gets inside your castle, you’ll have a choice of whether to retreat (again, I retreated). Your army will pull out and you’ll "win" the battle.
Between battles: Xiahou Yuan reports his loss, and Cao Cao moves to hold the territory.
Battle 36: Han River
Zhuge Liang will use some kind of ploy to decrease your defense as the battle begins. You’ll need to kill everyone here to win. Move southwest to engage Liu Bei’s army. They won’t move, so you’ll have to go to them. On the enemies second turn Zhuge Liang will order the army to attack, and Zhang Yi’s and Meng Da’s armies will come after you. The gong ploy will go off again on your third turn, lowering your defense. Keep killing off the enemies, and try and bring your defense back up. Liu Feng’s troops (the beast trainers) will begin moving on the enemies’ forth turn, and the gong will sound again on turn five. Watch out for the tigers, they’ll hit anyone standing behind their target (same as Zhang Fei’s weapon). Liu Bei’s group moves on enemy turn five, but you should have another turn before any of them reach you. More gongs on turn seven. Zhuge himself will move on turn eight, but by then his group should be the only one left alive. Finish him off for the win. You’ll get Zhuge’s hat as reward.
Between battles: A soldier tells you that Ma Chao came around from behind and is burning your supply camp. Restock and deploy.
Battle 37: Ma Chao’s Raid
Ma Chao and co. are scattered in your camp, and Liu Feng and Meng Da ambush you from behind. However, a force led by Cao Zhang arrives in the north to help out. Ignore Liu Feng’s group and move north to help Cao Zhang fight Ma Chao. Ma Dai will drop a helmet when you kill him. On the enemy’s third turn, Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei arrive in the south and you’ll be asked whether to retreat. If you pick the first choice, the victory condition will change to moving Cao Cao to the north exit of the camp. The second choice continues the fight. If the camp is pretty much within your control, you might consider staying around, but if things aren’t looking good just get Cao Cao to retreat. If you do fight, remember to block off the south gate and use magic or archers to help if you have them. You’ll be asked again on the fourth enemy turn if you really want to stay and fight; Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei will start moving if you say yes. I couldn’t beat them, so I retreated.
Between battles: Cao Zhang joins you now. Cao Cao could not hold Hanzhong against the skill of Zhuge Liang’s strategy. He decides to turn south, to Jingzhou, where Guan Yu governs the region. Cao Ren and Man Chong are at Xiangyang defending the area. Cao Cao decides to send Yu Jin, but Pang De begs to be sent as well to prove his worth to Cao Cao, promising to kill Guan Yu or die trying. Cao Cao lets him go. Meanwhile, Cao Cao sends an alliance offer to Sun Quan, asking him to help in the attack on Jingzhou. He accepts, and sends Lu Meng as commander of the Wu forces.
You’re Yu Jin now. Restock and head for battle.
Battle 38: Fan Castle
Cao Ren and Man Chong are in the castle, Yu Jin’s group is on the north mountains about to fight Guan Yu’s fleet, and your main force is about to tackle the Shu-held gate in the middle. Pang De starts out near Zhou Cang; this is bad, you’ll need to stay away from him or Pang De will suffer permanent death in a duel. He’ll be safe once you take out Zhou Cang. By now Sima Yi probably has his fourth level wind spell, which hits everyone on the map; pretty useful. You also likely have one or two healers who know the mega-healer spell, so use that too for wounded people in far off places; Yi Ji will certainly be abusing it. On the enemy’s fifth turn you’ll get a choice; the first option changes nothing, but the second option gives all enemies a free strength-up spell. If you want a little extra challenge, try the second choice. Either way the southern camp will now move north. Clear out all the enemies that you can. On the enemy’s 8th turn, Wang Pu will call the retreat and the remaining enemies will begin moving back to their camp. Once all enemies are dead or have retreated, you’re done.
Between battles: Guan Yu retreats to Fan castle, where Lu Meng and Wu surrounded him and execute him. Lu Meng, however, is haunted by Guan Yu’s spirit and dies. Sun Quan tries to avoid the curse by sending Guan Yu’s head to Cao Cao, but Cao Cao gives the head a state burial in honor of the service that Guan Yu did for him. Another red-blue choice in the next scene. In Chengdu, Liu Bei and Zhang Fei are outraged over Guan Yu’s death. Liu Bei wants to attack Sun Quan at once, but Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang do not agree. Zhang Fei is soon assassinated by some of his soldiers he mistreated, and his head is brought to Sun Quan. Liu Bei’s army marches to Yiling to fight Wu. To repel him, Sun Quan sends out the young strategist Lu Xun. Liu Bei’s army is defeated, and at Baidicheng, Liu Bei dies of shame over being unable to avenge his brothers. His incompetant son Liu Chan takes over as head of Shu. Cao Cao takes advantage of the change in leadership by attacking Hanzhong, where Zhuge Liang has come to meet him.
Battle 39: Breakthrough at Hanzhong
Sima Yi will point out the south gate and ask you if you want to try an ambush. Pick the first option to keep all your people together, or the second option to send half your army as an ambush. Your goal here is to reach the far side of Zhuge Liang’s gate, but you should go ahead and attack the south gate first. If you get close to either gate, Zhuge Liang will spring his own ambushes as Wei Yan and Ma Chao pop up behind you. You can expose the ambushes yourself by moving a unit over to one of the hills. Your ambush troops will return on turn seven behind the south gate, which will confuse all the soldiers at that gate. What I did is to send the ambush and then just wait until turn seven. If your ambush goes off and you haven’t triggered the Shu ambushes, Zhuge will send them out anyway but the east gate guards won’t move. Have your ambush troops take out the south gate while your main army deals with the ambushes. When you’ve finally killed everyone, blitz the east gate and clear a path through for Cao Cao. Get him to the east side of the gate and the enemy will retreat, giving you the victory.
Between battles: Zhuge Liang retreats, and Cao Cao presses on towards Chengdu.
Battle 40: Gates of Yizhou
Sima Yi will ask you which southern gate you want to pass through; first choice is the west gate and second choice is the east gate. You’ll have to go through the north gate first, though. Remember to stay staggered as you approach to avoid being hit by the catapults, although it can be hard in this cramped space. Ma Su and Wei Yan will retreat once you’re inside their gate, and they’ll hang out with Guan Xing’s fort guards. Take them out too. On the enemy’s sixth turn, Zhuge will summon Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, and the Xi Liang officers as reinforcements just south of the middle fotress, and Jiang Wei will bring out some troops around the north gate. Simply demolish Meng Huo’s group, then sit at the fortress and take out the reinforcements when they get down to you. When all is said and done, begin attacking your designated gate. After beginning your attack, the last enemy ambushes will pop up in the area near the center fort and the other gate will move to attack you. Hold them off with your rear guard and blitz through the gate until Cao Cao is through to the other side. Zhuge Liang’s fan and the Green Jade are your rewards.
Between battles: Having overcome Shu’s defenses, Cao Cao and the Wei army march on Cheng Du to put an end to Shu and Zhuge Liang once and for all. You’ll be using all the Cao’s in the next battle for some reason, so buy them some new equipment if you’ve been neglecting them.
Battle 41: Cheng Du
You’ll have a choice at the start, but it only changes the dialogue; both choices will make the victory condition defeating Liu Chan. Chances are you haven’t used most of the Cao’s in a while, so just move them near the enemy so they can be targets. Split up and take out the gate guards. Shu reinforcements will arrive in the castle on the enemy’s second turn, so you’ll have to deal with them next. Zhuge will annoy you greatly during this be spamming his mega-heal spell from within the castle keep. At least now all the Shu officers will die will you kill them this time. Slaughter them and converge on the inner second gate. When you kill one of these guards, Ma Chao and Zhao Yun will spring up inside the gate. Block off the gate with some strong troops, you know the drill. Watch out for those catapults though. Zhao Yun drops his Silver Armor when you off him. Don’t get too close to the gate to the inner sanctum; just kill the enemies and then move to one of the side barricades. When you get close, Meng Huo/Zhu Rong will arrive behind the gate and you’ll need to clear them out quickly. Now move to the side gate to the inner castle and break a path open to move Cao Cao through. Xu Chu can duel one of the cavalry officers and kill him. Move Cao Cao next to Liu Chan and he’ll surrender the city, giving you the victory. The Red Jade is your reward.
Between battles: Cao Cao has captured Cheng Du and crushed Shu. Zhuge Liang, Jiang Wei, and Ma Su flee the fallen kingdom. When Cao Cao learns of this, he quickly mobilizes his army to catch the running strategists.
Battle 42: Baidicheng
Zhuge and his remaining loyal officers are holed up in a castle, with the Nanman troops guarding the gate. Sima Yi mentions that the Nanman aren’t very loyal and that you could probably buy them off. You can try it, but Zhu Rong will reject your initial offers of 1000 and 2000 gold; you’ll need to give them 4000 for them to retreat. Don’t bother paying, just plow through them. The next couple of gates aren’t too hard to get through, but some annoying cataupults on the other side of the wall will pummel you, so watch out. If you did pay off the Nanman troops, they’ll reappear outside the castle on turn seven, so you’ll have to turn around and deal with them next. Jiang Wei will open the middle gate for the Nanman on turn nine if they left and came back, so that’s one incentive if you decided to pay them. When you get close to the middle of the castle, Jiang Wei will summon some wood soldiers to block the gate and allows Zhuge Liang to flee out the east gate. You can prevent this by killing Jiang Wei as soon as you enter the middle, though. Work fast and kill all the enemies within thirty turns for the victory. You’ll get the White Jade as a prize.
Between battles: Zhuge Liang retreats once again, mourning for his allies who stayed behind and died. He seeks employment with Sun Quan in order to keep the fight against Cao Cao going. Cao Cao continues his relentless pursuit.
Battle 43: Chi Bi Revisited
Sun Quan has agreed to fight you. Cao Cao demands that Zhuge Liang be turned over, but Sun Quan rebuffs him and some of the Wu strategists summon up some wooden soldiers. You’ll be asked whether to split your forces; the first choice will keep them together and the second choice will split them into two groups. Lu Xun’s navy pops up on the far right side after this. Move south toward the shore. Ling Tong’s group and all the Wu boats will come after you. Split up and take care of both groups until they’ve been destroyed. Now land in the middle and take out the strategists so they’ll stop making new wood soldiers. Sun Quan will probably send his men after you now, but you can just move around through the forest to the bottom of his camp and take out Zhuge Liang before they can cause too much trouble. You’ll get the Evil Jade for winning.
Between battles: Cao Cao decides to take the opportunity to destroy Wu as well. Stock up and prepare for the march to Jian Ye.
Battle 44: Return to Ru Xu Kou
You’re back at Ru Xu Kou, only this time you’re the one attacking. For the choice here, the first option will cause Lu Xun, Jiang Wei, and the Nanman troops to appear and you’ll only have 15 turns to kill Zhuge Liang. The second choice sends your army forward into the river and gives you 30 turns. If you want an easy battle, pick the first choice. All the enemy units will appear on the map and will begin moving toward you (except Sun Quan’s camp). Just move back into your fort and hold them off for five turns. After five turns, Zhuge decides to retreat and you’ll win. If you want to actually kill everyone, though, pick the second choice and move down to the enemy navy in the river and kill them all. If you picked the second choice, Lu Xun’s group will appear on the enemy’s third turn, so you’ll need to deal with them too. Once they’re all gone, sail to the south bank and hit a few of the enemies. This will cause them to start moving, so back up into the river where you can seperate them and take them out one at a time. The Nanman army will arrive on the enemy’s 8th turn if you picked the second choice, and they’ll move up toward you as well. Once you’ve been on the south bank for a couple of turns, Zhang Zhao and Lu Su will start making more of those wooden soldiers. Have your stronger forces hold them off while you send a few people around the side to Zhuge. Defeat him for the win.
Between battles: Sun Quan retreats once again, this time to his capital of Jian Ye. Cao Cao prepares for the final battle over control of China. Get all the items you need, and begin the next battle.
Final Battle: Jian Ye
You’ll need to kill both Zhuge Liang and Sun Quan for victory. Your army is split up into three groups, each attacking a gate, and unless you want to walk all the way around the outside of the castle, your groups won’t meet up until you’re in the very middle where Zhuge is. Large amounts of archers and catapults are spread out here as well, placed behind walls where you can’t get at them. Plus the wooden soldiers will keep respawning every few turns until you eliminate their respective summoners (Jiang Wei, Zhang Zhao, and Lu Su). Move over to the gate guards, and when you get close, they’ll begin moving. You can then lure them back and divide them up so you can kill them without too much of a problem. Have whoever has on the Mirror Armor go attack the archers and catapults. Once you’ve finally managed to get past each group’s initial gates, come together and attack the center. When you approach, Zhuge will summon his own wooden soldiers and Sun Quan will start moving. He’ll run right up to you, so you can easily defeat him. Zhuge will stay on his fortress, though, so you’ll have to go through the wooden soldiers plus the magic casters inside. Try and kill the three summoners so you won’t have to deal with the wooden soldiers respawning all the time, then break through to the fortresses, surround Zhuge, and pummel him into submission. When both him and Sun Quan are dead, every character you have still alive will say something and then the battle, and the war, are over.
Aftermath: Sun Quan makes it back to his ruined throne room, where he collapses. Cao Cao enters and observes the area, then sends Xiahou Dun and Xun Yu to find Zhuge Liang. Zhuge is outside somewhere, and Sima Yi walks over to him. They have a nice long chat, where Sima Yi begs Zhuge to help rebuild the kingdom. With all of China under his control, Cao Cao returns to Xuchang and reports to the Emperor. The map of China comes up and all of Cao Cao’s enemies are shown, then disappear in the order he defeated them. Cao Cao and his officers appear, then you’ll get to see your officers’ stats as the credits roll. At the end of the credits, you’ll see a red bird on the screen. When you load the game again, the bird will be on the title screen, indicating that you beat the Red Storyline.
Congratulations, you’ve beaten Legend of Cao Cao! Now try the Blue Storyline.

Participant-continued from Tong Gate-
Between battles: Ma Chao, Ma Dai, and Pang De go off to Han Zhong to stay with Zhang Lu. At the gate, Cao Cao meets Sima Yi and he joins your army. Liu Bei moves west from Jingzhou to meet Liu Zhang at Yizhou, where he agrees to defend against Zhang Lu. He takes Pang Tong with him and leaves Zhuge Liang back in Jing. At night during a storm, Zhuge becomes weak and is possessed by a demon. Sima Yi seems to notice this from his residence. Back in Yizhou, Pang Tong is ambushed by Liu Zhang’s men and dies. Liu Bei sends Guan Ping to bring Zhuge Liang to Yizhou as replacement, and with his now-evil help, Liu Zhang is crushed by Liu Bei. Sun Quan is also on the move back towards He Fei. During the meeting, Diao Chan comes in with a secret plan. She uses some Scarves soldiers to capture Han Zhong. Zhang Lu is brought before Cao Cao, and Pang De agrees to serve Wei. Cao Zhang also arrives to help his father. Xiahou Yuan is sent to Mt. Ding Jun to help Cao Hong guard it. Zhuge Liang leads the attack on Han Zhong while Liu Bei returns to Jing. At night, Pang De and Cheng Yu have a little chat before the battle.
The shop has updated at last. Buy the new stuff and move out.
Battle 32: Mt. Ding Jun
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 25 turns!
Enemies: 6 Cavalry, 4 Mounted Archers, 4 Chariots, 2 Archers, 2 Monks, 2 Soldiers, 2 Status Mages, Ma Chao (Chariot), Fa Zheng (Healing Mage), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Yan Yan (Cavalry), Huang Zhong (Mounted Archer), Lei Tong (Monk), Wei Yan (Cavalry), Meng Da (Soldier)
Allies: 4 Bandits, 3 Soldiers, Archer
Rewards: 2700 Gold, Saddle (kill Yan Yan)
Special Items: Imperial Seal (defeat all enemies before turn 10)
Lots of dialogue at the beginning of the battle, which ends with Guan Yu and Zhuge leaving the battlefield. Your forces are really spread out here, so be careful. Move Xiahou Yuan’s group over to one of the other ones so they can help out. Your guys will probably be swarmed quickly; there’s not much you can do about it except try and stay healed up. If one of Ma Chao’s group manages to break through through one of the north gates, some reinforcements will arrive in the northwest corner to help him out. Again, like He Fei, don’t worry if Xiahou Yuan gets killed here, you won’t get a game over. Note that if Xiahou Yuan encounters Huang Zhong, they’ll have a duel; unlike the Red path, Xiahou Yuan will only be defeated, not killed. If an enemy manages to reach either the fort inside the castle or the spot where Xiahou Yuan started, you’ll be given the option to retreat or stay. Zhuge will show up if you choose to retreat and, strangely, will order the Shu army to pull out.
Between battles: Guan Yu is told by a cavalry officer that Liu Bei has been injured and is dying. On his deathbed, Liu Bei says he’s sorry for breaking the oath before he passes away. Guan Yu runs off. At the Wei camp, your officers are puzzled over Shu’s actions. Xiahou Yuan and the others leave, and Diao Chan comes in with a message from Guan Yu requesting aid. You’ll be given the Dilu horse and Liu Beu’s Twin Blades. Prepare to move out once again.
Battle 33: Helping Guan Yu
Conditions for Victory: Protect Guan Yu/Move Guan Yu to Wang Pu within 25 turns!
Enemies: 16 Pirates, 8 Archers, Pan Zheng (Soldier), Jiang Qin (Pirate), Zhuge Jin (Healing Mage), Zhou Tai (Pirate), Xu Sheng (Mounted Archer), Ding Feng (Monk), Lu Meng (Attack Mage), Sun Quan (Ruler)
Allies: 3 Soldiers, Archer, Healing Mage, Liao Hua (Bandit), Zhou Cang (Bandit), Wang Pu (Soldier), Guan Yu (Special Cavalry)
Rewards: 2900 Gold
Special Items: Viper Blade (defeat all enemies)
The Shu forces are surrounded by the Wu army in their castle. Zhang Fei and Guan Yu’s sons are soon defeated right before the Wei army arrives. You’ll have to choose which battle condition you want when you begin the battle. Quickly move south and start killing the troops around the north gate. Guan Yu can take care of himself, but sadly the other Shu troops are not very strong and they’ll be slaughtered by the Wu army. Get inside the castle as soon as you can, even if you don’t need to save Wang Pu it makes a nice defensive position. From here just kill off the Wu army as it comes to you. Make sure to leave some people outside to help Guan Yu.
Between battles: Guan Yu finds the dying Zhang Fei along the road and manages to hear his last words before Zhang Fei dies. Guan Ping also comes near, but he collapses and dies soon after. Guan Yu decides to work with Cao Cao in order to avenge his fallen family. Meanwhile, Zhuge and Zhou Yu are discussing Cao Cao. You’ll get a quick recap of the recent events where you learn that Evil Zhuge cooperated with Zhou Yu and Wu to bring Liu Bei down. With Liu Bei and Zhang Fei dead, Cao Cao moves south into Jing.
Guan Yu has Red Hare and his Blue Dragon Halberd on him, if you want to move those items to someone else. Restock and then move out.
Battle 34: Xiangyang
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Sun Quan within 30 turns!
Enemies: 11 Pirates, 2 Soldiers, 2 Monks, Mounted Archer, 3 Archers, Quan Cong (Archer), Ling Tong (Cavalry), Ding Feng (Monk), Xu Sheng (Mounted Archer), Zhou Tai (Pirate), Zhuge Jin (Healing Mage), Sun Quan (Ruler), Pan Zheng (Soldier), Jiang Qin (Pirate), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Gan Ning (Pirate)
Rewards: 3000 Gold, Class Seal
It’s only a few enemies at the start. Move your forces south toward the mountains. When you get close to the shore, Pan Zheng’s ambush will be exposed and Lu Su comes in with his navy. You’ll get a choice here; the first choice will remove Sun Quan, Zhou Tai, and Zhuge Jin from the battle and changes the victory condition to defeating all enemies. The second choice keeps the battle as is. Picking the second choice will cause Sun Quan to charge out of the castle. If you picked that choice then the battle is pretty easy, just hold on until Sun Quan gets close and then murder him. If you selected the other choice, then stay back and let the enemies come to you while you pick them off one by one.
Between battles: Zhuge and Zhou Yu have another meeting. Cao Cao continues his attack on Wu.
Battle 35: Chi Bi Revisited
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Sun Quan within 30 turns!
Enemies: 24 Pirates, 11 Soldiers, 7 Archers, 4 Monks, 2 Cavalry, 2 Catapults, Mounted Archer, Status Mage, Zhou Tai (Pirate), Zhou Yu (Strategist), Jiang Qin (Pirate), Lu Xun (Strategist), Ding Feng (Monk), Gan Ning (Pirate), Pan Zheng (Soldier), Qian Cong (Archer), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Xu Sheng (Mounted Archer), Ling Tong (Cavalry), Lu Meng (Attack Mage), Zhang Zhao (Attack Mage), Zhuge Jin (Status Mage), Sun Quan (Ruler)
Rewards: 3200 Gold
You get yet another choice at the start. The first option will have your fleet wait while Lu Xun’s group moves closer; the second will move you down to Gan Ning’s fleet. I went with the first option. Let Lu Xun come to you and then start hitting his fleet quickly, before they can do too much damage to you (and they do a lot). Try and get your mages to use their multi-target spells to clear out the enemy. Once you kill Lu Xun, Sun Quan will order Zhou Yu’s navy to attack. Finish off the remaining enemies and turn around so you’re ready to face him. Defeat his group in the same way you did Lu Xun’s. After you kill Zhou Yu, Ding Feng’s group will get the order to attack and they’ll come after you. Beware, they have catapults with them which will really annoy you. Stay spread out and annihilate the enemy. Once you’ve defeated most of the Wu navy, Sun Quan will sound the retreat and you’ll win the battle.
Between battles: Sun Quan and Zhou Yu run away. Cao Cao follows them further into Wu.
Battle 36: Ru Xu Kou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Sun Quan within 30 turns!
Enemies: 19 Pirates, 7 Soldiers, 7 Archers, 2 Catapults, Mounted Archer, Zhou Tai (Pirate), Zhou Yu (Strategist), Gan Ning (Pirate), Xu Sheng (Mounted Archer), Qian Cong (Archer), Ling Tong (Cavalry), Pan Zheng (Soldier), Zhuge Jin (Healing Mage), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Zhang Zhao (Attack Mage), Sun Quan (Ruler), Lu Xun (Strategist), Jiang Qin (Pirate)
Rewards: 3400 Gold, Class Seal
More starting choices. First choice will keep your army on the bank, while the second will send you down into the river. I picked the second choice. If you can, stay where you are for the first turn and let Zhou Yu and Gan Ning come to you. Heal up any damage they did and then destroy their pirates. Again, multi-target spells will be a big help here. Lu Xun’s group will arrive to your right on the enemy’s second turn, so have some troops over there ready to face them. Notice that Jiang Qin actually dies when you kill him. After you’ve crushed the Wu navy, move south to the troops around the fence and pick them off with magic and arrows before you engage them. Xu Sheng also dies for good here. Heal up and approach Sun Quan’s camp. Ding Feng and Lu Meng will arrive with ambush troops in the forest, and Sun Quan charges forward. Hold off the enemy and pummel Sun Quan until he goes down. The enemy will once again retreat and the field is yours.
Between battles: Sun Quan and Zhou Yu continue their retreat all the way back to Jian Ye. Cao Cao, eager to avenge his defeat at Chi Bi, marches on the Wu capital.
Battle 37: Jian Ye
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Sun Quan within 40 turns!
Enemies: 11 Archers, 8 Catapults, 7 Soldiers, 4 Pirates, 2 Monks, Cavalry, Status Mage, Pan Zheng (Soldier), Quan Cong (Archer), Zhou Tai (Pirate), Gan Ning (Pirate), Ding Feng (Monk), Ling Tong (Cavalry), Lu Su (Attack Mage), Lu Meng (Attack Mage), Zhang Zhao (Attack Mage), Lu Xun (Strategist), Zhuge Jin (Healing Mage), Zhou Yu (Strategist), Sun Quan (Ruler), 20 Wooden Soldiers
Rewards: 3500 Gold
Special Items: Flying Dragon Shirt (kill Gan Ning), Blue Shield (kill Ling Tong), Iron Helmet (kill Pan Zheng), Saint’s Sword (kill Zhuge Jin)
This battle plays out much like Jian Ye in the red path; you’re split into three groups, each focused on a different gate. You’ll meet a new enemy here, the Wooden Soldier; they’re not the strongest of enemies, but their strength lies in their ability to respawn every few turns until the mage who summons them is killed. Luckily most of them are boxed in here, unable to get at you. The catapults and archers, however, will annoy you to no end here. Once you pass one of the inner gates, the wooden soldiers near that gate will be released from their boxes and will start coming after you. You should send whoever has the Mirror Armor you picked up at He Fei deal with the long-range units while you attack the gates. Once you get to one of the innermost gates (where the mages are), Sun Quan will order an all-out attack. A good strategy here is to use your two side groups to run away to lure away most of the enemies while Cao Cao’s group moves in for the kill. Eliminate Sun Quan for the last time to capture the city. Anyone you didn’t already kill off will conviently die, except Zhou Yu who just retreats.
Between battles: Cao Cao meets Zhou Yu in the rubble of Sun Quan’s throne room, and they have a brief talk before Zhou Yu drops dead. Cao Cao has crushed Wu under the power of his army.

Chapter 4: Resurrection of the Demon King
Your strategists will report on the situation. With Sun Quan dead and Wu demolished, Cao Cao returns to Jing to begin his attack on Shu. You’ll see evil Zhuge again in a scene with Jiang Wei. Zhuge has set up a trap for Cao Cao, the Stone Warrior Formation maze.
Battle 38: Stone Warrior Formation
Conditions for Victory: Reach the north end of the maze within 30 turns!
Enemies: 16 Clay Soldiers, 4 Zhuge Liang’s (Master Strategist)
Rewards: 3600 Gold
Special Items: Blue Jade (complete the battle), Zhuge’s Hat (complete the battle)
This battle’s a different from usual. For starters, move everyone north into the southwest square of the maze. Now send someone to the next square north; this will cause the gate to the center-south square to open. Send another person to that area to cause the gate to the northwest square to open. Zhuge will pop up and taunt you before moving to the center-north square and summoning up a new enemy, the Clay Soldiers. Send about half your army after him. These guys will cause confuse with each punch, so be careful. Break through them and hit Zhuge; another Zhuge arrives and moves to the middle-east square, where he also summons more Clay Soldiers. Get your other group to attack this new threat. Once you hit this second Zhuge, a third Zhuge will show up in the south-east square with yet more clay Soldiers. Just move any troops out of the middle-west square to close a door so they can’t bother you. After you kill the other two Zhuge’s, go south to deal with this one. Once you’ve reached the southeast square, the door to the northeast square will open along with another Zhuge. Kill this last Zhuge to open the northeast square’s north gate, then walk through for the victory.
Between battles: Zhuge Liang’s maze couldn’t stop Cao Cao, and he continues his march. Restock and deploy.
Battle 39: Baidicheng
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 30 turns!
Enemies: 7 Soldiers, 6 Archers, 6 Catapults, 5 Chariots, 2 Monks, 2 Cavalry, Zhang Yi (Soldier), Ma Dai (Chariot), Zhang Ji (Monk), Wei Yan (Cavalry), Ma Su (Status Mage), Ma Liang (Attack Mage), Jiang Wei (Attack Mage), Zhuge Liang (Master Strategist)
Rewards: 3800 Gold
Special Items: Red Jade (complete the battle)
Zhuge’s guarding the castle here along with his strategist pals. Beging by attacking the gate guards here, they shouldn’t put up much of a fight. Once you’re inside, those catapults are going to be sniping at you the whole time, so try and destroy them with spells. Take out the group to your left and continue inside. Zhang Yi’s group will move toward you following this; put Cao Cao next to him and they’ll have a quick duel where Cao Cao kills him. After killing Zhang Yi, you can choose whether or not to taunt the other Shu generals; the first choice does nothing, while the second choice opens the middle south gate. If you open the gate, Wei Yan’s group will charge you, so lure them south and away from their support before you eliminate them. Once you’ve gone either through that gate or the one Ma Dai is guarding, Zhuge and Jiang Wei will retreat, leaving Ma Liang and Ma Su to deal with you. Ma Liang will summon some Wooden Soldiers, and Ma Dai’s group will head for your position if they’re still alive. Since Zhuge was nice enough to leave the east gate open, just go around from that side and ambush Ma Liang to remove those pesky Wooden Soldiers. Then just finish off any remaining enemies and you’re done.
Between battles: With Ma Su and Ma Liang defeated, Cao Cao’s army proceeds on its march to Cheng Du.
Battle 40: Gates of Yizhou
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 30 turns!
Enemies: 8 Soldiers, 6 Catapults, 4 Archers, Yi Ji (Healing Mage), Sun Qian (Archer), Fa Zheng (Healing Mage), Jian Yong (Archer), Wei Yan (Cavalry), Ma Su (Status Mage)
Rewards: 4000 Gold
Special Items: Evil Jade (complete the battle)
Not a lot of enemies to start with. Begin by clearing out the gate in front of you, shouldn’t be too hard. After everyone in the east gate is dead, fortify the east gate and send a small group to attack Ma Su’s group. Once you defeat him, Ma Su will call his ambushes, with the Nanman troops appearing at your starting point, Ma Chao’s chariots appearing on the far side of the west gate, and Lei Tong’s group past the north gate. You’ll be asked whether you want to break through the north gate or just defeat all enemies. Use your main army to easily defeat the Nanman, who are cut off from support. By the time you’ve killed them, Ma Chao should be at your doorstep, so turn around and deal with him next. Lei Tong’s group will garrison the north gate, and will only attack if you get close, so don’t worry about them. If you still need to defeat all enemies, go take out the west gate; either way, once you’re done, move north toward the north gate. Lure out Lei Tong’s soldiers and dispatch them. Then begin your attack on the gate. If you didn’t already conquer the west gate, Yi Ji will call for help and they’ll start moving toward you, but it’s too late for them. When you get a path open, send Cao Cao through and you’ve won.
Between battles: Cao Cao crushed Ma Su’s feeble defense force, although Ma Su himself managed to escape. Sima Yi suggests a plan, and Jia Xu and Diao Chan go to carry it out, making them unavailable for deployment. Restock if you need to, and deploy for the next battle.
Battle 41: Jieting
Conditions for Victory: Defeat all enemies within 30 turns!
Enemies: 11 Soldiers, 8 Archers, 8 Catapults, 2 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, Liu Feng (Soldier), Meng Da (Soldier), Jiang Wan (Attack Mage), Fei Wei (Healing Mage), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Huang Zhong (Mounted Archer), Wei Yan (Cavalry), Ma Su (Status Mage)
Rewards: 4100 Gold
Special Items: White Jade (complete the battle)
Ma Su and Wei Yan are still retreating, and make it past the first gate just as your army arrives. They’ll spend their time fleeing to the northwest fence, so move forward and assualt the first gate in front of you. Unlike the last level, the guards aren’t content to wait for you and will move to attack once you’re near the gate. Still, you should be able to defeat them without too much of a problem. Then fortify the north half of this gate with your best officers. On the enemy’s fifth turn, Ma Su will be in position and will call out Ma Chao’s chariot troops again. You’ll once again be asked if you want to break through the gate in the northwest or just defeat all enemies. If you picked to break through, the troops from the east gate will decide to be helpful by also attacking you. Stay in the gate and beat back the enemies. If you brought Sima Yi, have him use his ultimate wind spell over and over to weaken the enemies; no one will be healing them. On the enemy’s seventh turn the Nanman join the fun by appearing at your starting point, so send out some excess generals to repel them while you continue to hold out against the main army. It’s a battle of endurance, but unless you get poor luck with your hits you should be able to win out in the end if you hold the gate. When you’ve finally killed them all, just move up to the northwest gate. Don’t forget to send someone over to the east gate to grab the goodies at the forts. Most of the enemies at the northwest are ranged, so you should easily be able to move past them/kill them for the win.
Between battles: Ma Su’s flight ends with his death at the hands of Wei. Sima Yi reports that Zhuge Liang has been spotted further north near Han Zhong, and Cao Cao moves to engage. Meanwhile, we see Diao Chan and her Scarves buddies meet up with Xu Shu. Diao Chan and Jia Xu return to Cao Cao’s camp as Cao Cao prepares to move out. Bring Sima Yi for the next battle to make it a lot easier.
Battle 42: Han Zhong Mountains
Conditions for Victory: Defeat Jiang Wei within 40 turns!
Enemies: 12 Soldiers, 7 Archers, 7 Chariots, 5 Pirates, 4 Cavalry, 2 Mounted Archers, 2 Monks, 2 Healing Mages, 2 Attack Mages, Ma Dai (Chariot), Ma Chao (Chariot), Wei Yan (Cavalry), Zhao Yun (Special Cavalry), Huang Zhong (Mounted Archer), Jiang Wei (Attack Mage)
Rewards: 4200 Gold
Evil Zhuge runs inside the mountain and leaves Jiang Wei and the Shu army to hold you off. You can tell this battle is going to be epic just by looking at it; not very many officers, but hordes of generic enemies are all across the map. Mountains block the most direct path, so you’ll have to move around from the bottom. Make sure you bring Sima Yi, and have him spam his wind spell over and over so the enemies along the way become weaker and easier to kill once you’re in range. Begin by moving south and taking out the small group in the forest. It always seems to start off raining, so your attack mages should stay back until the rain stops. Try and kill the enemies before their turns come up, or the healing mages down in the river will heal them from afar. Once the first group falls, put all your mages on the right side of your group and move further south to the mountain pass. Meng You will show up at the pass and the Nanman troops will ambush you in the forest. Have your people with the best defense hold back Meng You while you deal with the Nanman. They are pretty hard to attack, and you’ll likely be hurting once they’re dead, so heal up as you continue your march south. You’ll have a nice rest spot here since there are only a few enemies guarding a tent. Heal up and move off into the river. You could just cross straight east, but leaving the healers behind will annoy you, so go ahead and defeat them and their entourage. If you’ve been casting the wind spell each turn they should be softened up a bit, making it easier. After they’ve dropped, get out of the water and scale the mountain to reach Jiang Wei’s camp. Constant use of the wind spell will have turned this place into a ghost town by now, making it smooth sailing to Jiang Wei. Unfortunately, once you enter the camp, Jiang Wei will summon up some of your friends from Jian Ye, the Wooden Soldiers. Plow through the rest of the enemies and execute Jiang Wei to conquer the battle.
Between battles: Xu Shu enters Cao Cao’s tent to tell you about Zhuge Liang. This is the big one, so sell everything and spend all your cash on supplies before you move out.
Final Battle: Hall of the Demon King
Conditions for Victory: Reach the inner chamber within 40 turns!
Enemies: Lu Su Ghost (Attack Mage), Lu Meng Ghost (Attack Mage), Zhou Yu Ghost (Strategist), Sun Jian Ghost (Ruler), Sun Ce Ghost (Ruler), Sun Quan Ghost (Ruler), Liu Bei Ghost (Ruler), Zhang Fei Ghost (Special Cavalry), Zhuge Liang (Master Strategist), Wooden Soldiers, Clay Soldiers
You’re inside the mountain now, with four rooms around you. Only the east room, filled with water, is open. Inside are the ghosts of Wu’s strategists, complete with Wooden Soldiers. The ghosts are the same classes as when they were alive. Clear out the wood soldiers and then exorcise the ghosts to make them stop spawning. After they’re dead, the south room will open, and the souls of the Sun family arrive along with Clay Soldiers. The Clay Soldiers are going to quickly clog up the hallway to the Sun room, so burn them with spells and rush in before they respawn. Once you’re done ghostbusting, the west room opens, but no one appears inside yet. Take the time to move your people back out of the earth room and regroup in the middle, healing if needed. Then bring some strong people followed by Cao Cao inside the room to make the spirits of Liu Bei and Zhang Fei appear. They haven’t got any soldiers, so they just shut the door and confuse everyone outside. Send them back to the netherworld, shouldn’t be too hard. When they’re laid to rest, the north room finally opens and Zhuge appears. He decides to resummon all the people you just killed, so now you get to kill them again. He laughs about something, but it seems like his demon summoning ritual isn’t working. Anyway move north and cut through the deadweights. Watch out, the Wu strategists like to burn you while you’re in the hallway. Did I mention these guys respawn? Get behind them as soon as possible and take down Evil Zhuge for good.
Aftermath: Evil Zhuge’s at the shrine. Cao Cao runs in and confronts the demon, who departs. Zhuge Liang collapses as he regains his senses. He has one final talk with Cao Cao before he passes on. Guan Yu enters and they mourn Zhuge Liang’s death. Later, outside on the cliff face, Xu Shu approaches Cao Cao and gives him a letter. They continue to talk about Guan Yu and the future of the kingdom. Guan Yu is praying at a tomb as Cao Cao enters and talks to him about what he’ll do next. Guan Yu leaves, and Cao Cao gives a quick prayer at the tomb before Xiahou Dun and Xun Yu come to him. Xu Chu and Diao Chan also appear (I guess they’re a couple now). Cao Cao wishes them luck, and everyone leaves the tomb as the credits begin. You’ll get to see that stats of all your generals here while the credits flash by. At the end of the credits there will be a blue bird icon, and when the game closes, load it up again and the bird will be there on the title screen, showing you beat the Blue Storyline.
Congratulations, you beat Legend of Cao Cao! Try the Red path if you haven’t already, or try to collect all the special weapons.

ParticipantHere Taishi Chi, let me give you a hand.
Gameplay basics
Foot > Archer
Archer > Mounted
Mounted > Foot
Mounted archer counts as archers.
Tactics are based on the 4 elements. Yellow is wind, red is fire, brown is earth, and blue is water. Wind can hit anywhere provide the enemy’s not on a fort, in the forrest, of behind a wall (doesn’t matter if the wall is brick of stick). Fire can be used anywhere as long as it’s not raining. Earth can by used on mountains or rocky terrain. Water can be used if the enemy is standing next to a body of water, or standing in snow.
You can check what tactics you can use when you click on any square on the map. The ones can’t be used are greyed out.
Unit movement is a little weird. You can’t move in between 2 enemy units. Let me show you an example
E = Enemy
C = Cao Cao
0 = nothing
E
0C
E
Cao Cao’s movement is 5, but if he wants to move through those 2 enemies, it’ll take you 2 turns to do it.
E
C
E
This is about as far as you can move. You’ll only be able to escape that in the next turn. The same applies to your enemies. Actually the 4 square around anyone can block someone
0x
xCx
0x
Those X’s are places that causes movement to be reduce around the character. It applies to all unless they are riding the Red Hare.

Dragon Scale Armor – When you get hit, your MP goes down instead of your HP. You will lose HP only when your MP bar is completely gone. Even if you have 1 MP left, you won’t take damage until it’s gone.
Flying Dragon Robe – Increase critical rate by 10 points.
Zhuge Liang’s Robe – Increase tactical power by 10 points.
Black Taoist robe – Increase Max MP by 20 points.
Phoenix Robe – Recovers a bit of HP at the beginning of each turn.
Silver Mirror Shield – Reduces damage from tactic by 15%.
Wind God’s Shield – Reduces BOTH tactical and physical damage by 15%.
Wheel – Increase movement of catapults by 2 points.
Flying Lightning – Increase movement by 2 point.
Shadow – Increase movement by 1 points.
Chi Tu – Allows you to move in between units.
Di Lu – Ignores terrain reductions allowing you to walk anywhere without losing movement.
Iron Helmet – Increase Max HP by 45 points.
Zhuge Liang’s Hat – Increase Max MP by 45 points.
Featherless arrow – Allows you to attack enemies from one space away like an archer.
Sun Tze’s Art of War – Gives you a little extra exp at the beginning of each turn.
New treaties of Meng De – When you fight, you get a little more exp than normal.
Blue Pouch Book – Recovers a little HP at the start of each turn.
Way of Peace – Recovers from any and all status effects at the beginning of your turn.
Peaceful Technique – Recovers a little MP at the beginning of each turn.
Heaven’s Book – Allows you to mimic the tactics of anyone next to you.
Six Arts of Wars – Gains a bit of weapon exp at the beginning of each turn.
Three Ploys – Gains a bit of armor exp at the beginning of each turn.
Bean Bag – Automatically uses a healing bean when you’re attacked. So if 4 enemies surround you, it’ll use a heal bean everytime one of them attacks you. Won’t work if you run out of beans though.
Imperial Seal – ALWAYS critical attack.
Green Dragon Jade – Allows you to use a super lightning tactic that randomly attacks one or multiple enemies with lightning multiple times. Can only be used when there’s a storm and the Dragon Jade Equiped. One of the 4 all powerful tactics.
Red Phoenix Jade – Allow you to use a super fire tactic when it’s bright and sunny. one of the 4 all powerful tactics.
Dark Warrior Jade – It causes status boost, and other random affects on EVERYONE (you and your enemies). That means it can actually boost your enemies while lowering your stats, or other weirdness. I don’t even know how to use it. I only tried it out once for fun, but it didn’t work for some reason. Probably gotten meet some requirement like the other 2 above. Who cares, I doubt you’ll want to risk it with this crap anyway.
White Tiger Jade – The final jade can heal all your guys completely, including whatever status affects that’s affecting you. No requirements.August 11, 2006 at 6:49 pm #20710Taishi Ci
ParticipantThanks for the info. I know I’ve gotten some of these, like the Ancestrel Sword, Lu Bu’s Halberd, Lu Bu’s Bow, Bean Bag…
I suppose you can go ahead and post some secrets for the first two chapters too since they’re done. Ways to save Dian Wei would be very helpful.

ParticipantMore Info About the Weapons and Armors!!!!!!!!!!
Regular weapons can be bought in the shops. They can only level up 3 times. The special weapons I listed can be leveled up 9 times and can’t be sold. while the most powerful normal weapon at level 3 at the end of the game is about 10 points higher, the special weapons make up for it with their special powers. The same applies to armor. You gain weapon experience by attacking and armor experience when you get hit. Pretty simple.
This is not a real secret (but you’ll need chinese knowledge to know about it), but if you max a regular weapon’s level and sell it, you’ll get a status boosting bean. Let me show you how it works.

This is Dian Wei’s stats. Notice the numbers next to his protrait? While those numbers kind of acts as historical ratings, they actually have another meaning. Dian Wei has Power: 100 Reflex: 98 Intelligence: 52 Luck: 72 Leadership: 80. These are actually their growth rates! Power and Intelligence are pretty much self explainitory. I have NO CLUE what Luck does (but might be related something I’ll cover below) and Leadership is Defense growth. Reflex covers many things. It covers your accuracy, your ability to dodge attacks, and your critical rate.
*Edit* This information I provided previously was incorrect, please see page 4 in this thread for a better explaination. The letters and corresponding numbers below are correct, but they are not the whole story. Again, check out page 4 of this thread for the correct explaination.
S = 4 Point
A = 3 Point
B = 2 Point
C = 1 Point
That means Dian Wei will gain 4 points of strength when he levels up, not 2. But the numbers don’t have to be 100, anything from 90-100 is S rank growth.
S = 90-100
A = 70-89
B = 50-69
C = 0-49
This is how you can tell who rocks and who sucks. Although all the tactican in this game rocks so they don’t really have to worry about the stats.
But wait, there’s a way to boost those numbers to make them grow better! Remember I mentioned beans that you can get by selling maxed out equipment? Those beans increase your growth rate numbers by 2 points. And when used in battle, they act as a stats booster for a random number of turns. Different types of equipment gives you different types of beans. Check your inventory whenever you sell a maxed out equipment. You’ll see a bean appear in it. don’t worry, I’ll tell you what gives you what.
Lance = Power Bean
Sword = Experience Bean (just more experience for leveling up)
Bow = Luck Bean
Staff = Luck Bean
Catapult = Power Bean
Fan = Intel Bean
Magic Sword = Intel Bean
Armor = Leadership Bean
Clothing = Reflex Bean
So, let say you have a Power Bean, if you use it on Cao Ren, his 88 strength will increase to 90, thus making his strength growth into S rank. Naturally, the lower the number, the more beans you need. It’s not wise to try and make someone with low intelligence and boost them to 90. It’s much better and easier to boost someone with moderately high stats to make them even better.
Look at the Dian Wei picture again. Let me explain the stats to you in those blue bars. The first one is power. The second one is defense. The third one is critical rate, but it also figures into accuracy, and ability to dodge attacks. The last stat is morale, which I know is based on luck growth. As to what morale does? I have no freaking clue. I never had to worry about this stat to beat the game anyway, so it’s probably not really that important. But if you got some Luck Beans to spare, might as well put them to use anyway. No sense in letting them go to waste.

ParticipantNice info here with the stats and beans. I knew you got something for selling maxed out shop gear but wasn’t sure.

ParticipantARGHHHHHHH I forgot to explain consecutive attacks!!!!
Sometimes you’ll notice people can double attack. These are basically random, but the better the reflex, the better the chance. Catapults can get consecutive attacked quite often. This is NOT like Liu bei’s Sword though. The way Liu Bei’s sword works is attack, get counter-attacked, then attack again. Consecutive attacks hit twice before enemies can counter attack.
Character Ratings
Let me tell you a bit about the characters and how they stack up. It also includes some extra info on the classes.
First of all, EVERYONE can class change twice. Once at level 15, again at level 30. You can class change by buying this stamp like item from the shops. They’ll have it later. You’ll probably start encountering this item in the chapter where you save Liu Bei from Lu Bu. Just get Cao Cao near Liu Bei and they’ll have a conversation. Then Liu Bei will thank Cao Cao and give him a stamp like item.
Cao Cao – Main character. Cao Cao is an excellent all around character with some awesome tactics. His attack tactics isn’t his main strong point, it’s his stats boosting tactic. That tactic boosts pretty much all his stats (except for mind, or magic power in RPG terms) for a random number of turns. His Wind and Fire Attack spells are weak, but can come in handy once in awhile. He can also heal, but again, it’s weak. Cao Cao probably ranks second to Diao Chan and Dian Wei for being the hardest to hit. But that doesn’t mean you should be careless. There is an easy way to equip Cao Cao with some of the easist to find special treasures that can really beef him up. His Sword of Heaven, (the default sword he comes with) Silver Armor (from XuZhou chapter) and the Wind God Shield (from Yuan Shao) will reduce both physical and tactical damage by a grand total of 30%. None of his growth can go up any high so don’t ever waste your stats boosting beans on him.
Xiahou Dun – Definitely a top 5 character. He has excellent growth and really good reflex. He has the third highest reflex after Dian Wei and Diao Chan (but either tied or a little below Cao Cao). Xiahou Dun can execute quite a few double attacks and dodge often. He is tied with Xu Chu for raw power. You might consider giving Xiahou Dun 12 luck beans to turn his luck growth to A rank, but it’s pretty hard.
Xiahou Yuan – He is a good all around character with good growths. You might want to use 5 defense beans to increase it from B to A. It’s pretty easy to do, but I wouldn’t try it with his other stats. Xiahou Yuan can die ONLY if you play the "evil" route in Ding Jun Mountain. That means your bar has to be red and you must be stupid enough to walk up to Huang Zhong to duel. If you’re playing the good route, Xiahou Yuan will only get defeated rather than get killed if the duel is triggered. A very easy to escape death.
Cao Ren – Decent mounted character, but you have Xiahou Dun and Zhang Liao. Forget this guy when you get Zhang Liao. If you still want to use him, you should definitely give him 1 strength bean to increase his strength growth. Yes, 1 bean is enough to make him stronger, but still not as good as Xiahou Dun or Zhang Liao.
Cao Hong – Crap. Just ditch him as soon as you can. Cao Hong is an armor unit, and armor units have one advantage; they can travel normally in water terrain. Very helpful in Wu chapters. That doesn’t save Cao Hong though. I wouldn’t waste my beans on him either.
Yue Jin – Better than Cao Hong and has potential, but Li Dian has better potential. It takes 6 strength beans to boost his strength growth from B to A. While you only need 2 luck bean to go from B to A. Neither of them are hard to accomplish. Boosting reflex requires 18 beans, very hard so I wouldn’t bother.
Li Dian – Li Dian’s strength is in his potential, not his original stats. You need to give him some beans to really make use of him. You need 4 strength beans to go from B to A, 1 intelliegnce bean to go from B to A, and 8 reflex beans to go from B to A. Intelligence is pointless so I wouldn’t waste my time with intelligence, but if you bring up his strength and reflex, he becomes better than Pang De.
Xun Yu – He’s an attack based tactican. USE ALL tacticans. They don’t need any boosting since their main strength is their intelligence, and every single one of your tacticans have S rank intel growth from the start. I think their real weakness is that it’s hard to increase their armor’s experience points. You have to take damage for it to go up. One of the most obvious ways is to get hit by tactics since they can take tactical damage better than the physical units. The other way is to walk up to an enemy tactican and wack him with a physical attack, he’ll counter with his own physical attack doing very little damage and giving you some armor experience points. This trick works for all your tacticans.
Xun You – He’s a healer and uses support based tactics. Use him. Here’s another tip if you’re having trouble raising the weapon experience points of any of the tactic based guys. You might consider spamming your tactics when victory is clearly in sight. That extra few turn of spamming could net you about 10 weapons experience point in a few turns. This trick works for all your tacticans.
Dian Wei – IN-FREAKING-SANE!!! Sadly, despite his historical profile giving him a 100 point strength, he is limited by his class abilities. His strength won’t be as high as Xu Chu or Xiahou Dun or Zhang Liao. But he has so many advantages it’s not even funny. Ok, this guy has the best reflex growth tied with Diao Chan. That means Dian Wei will have a much higher accuracy than other. It’s virtually impossible to hit him; can pull off critical and/or consecutive attacks like mad. Can use 2 of the best special weapons in the game. And the only one able to pull off 4 critical attacks!!! If you equip the Twin Whips, you have a character who can pull off 3 critical attacks in one turn if you’re lucky! Sure, the odds of pulling off a consecutive attack plus a critical twice is rare, but seeing 2 critical attacks is not. His class is martial artist type meaning most terrain can’t slow him down and can travel like normal in water! Wait wait wait! Dian Wei has tactics that can be used despite his low intel! First of all, his lower strength isn’t an issue when you use his strength boost tactic (looks just like an up arrow icon) making up for his slightly lower strength–and his strength not bad to begin with–along with even deadlier tactics when he class changes. This guy can lower people’s reflex (yellow down arrow icon I believe) and can poison people. While poison’s damage isn’t high, especially with Dian Wei, poison can cause all sorts of headaches. It can do damage and poison enemies for a random amount of turns, or it can do damage and not poison. It can also poison and not do damage, and it can completely miss. Poison can slowly drain enemy’s HP, very nice! Reflex down reduces the same amount no matter the intelligence!!! Oh and if you still want to make him more powerful, give him 11 luck beans to increase his luck growth. It’s pretty hard to do, but the rewards are great.
Chen Yu – Same as Xun Yu. Alternate between him and Xun Yu, or use both at once, it’s up to you.
Guo Jia – Kind of a dark magic like class. You’ll probably be using his poison as his main offensive attack. His class give him better healing abilities compared to Chen Yu and Xun Yu, but not as good a Xun You and Man Chong. He can also lower enemy stats and cause other status problems to the enemies. Also, Guo Jia can die and alter what happens in Battle of the Red Cliff. Saving Guo Jia means you have to retreat from battle where you prusuit Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi further north. In this battle, you have to bring both Guo Jia and Zhang Liao. At the beginning of the battle, choose to retreat and Guo Jia survives. If you choose to stay and fight, Guo Jia dies at the end of the chapter. Also, keep in mind that even though you saved Guo Jia, you can’t use him for 2 chapters. I thought I’d tell you so you won’t freak out when he’s not selectable in the character selection screen. If you’re a perfectionist and wants to keep him alive, you’ll never see the bonus battle where Cao Cao flees after the lost in Red Cliff.
Yu Jin – He’s a foot based archer so his attacks are a bit more versitile than Xiahou Yuan, but he can’t move as far as the mounted ones. Forget this guy, he sucks. Use Xu Huang if you want a foot based archer. He’s surprior in every way!
Xu Chu – It’s Xu Chu for crying out aloud!!! Ok, want more convincing? Like Dian Wei, he can use tactics. Yeah, his earth based tactics don’t hurt as much until he gets the really powerful ones, but he also has the ability to travel freely on rough/mountainous terrain. Also, he can lower enemy’s defense to make use of his already high strength. Plus, Like Dian Wei, you might find yourself playing defensively in some chapters waiting for enemies to come to you. What better way to screw them up when you can lower their defense or cause a little extra damage while the enemies are trying to approach you!? Also, unlike the tacticans, tactics aren’t you main weapon, so you have no need to worry about MP. Once it runs out, you can attack with your regular attacks. It doesn’t get any better than this. Oh yeah, he’s the only one who can equip the featherless arrow allowing him to attack like an archer. His only weakness is naval battles. If you still want to make him better try giving him 11 reflex beans to give him a big jump. It’s pretty hard, but like Dian Wei, the results are spectacular.
Xu Huang – He’s the only other foot based archer besides Yu Jin. Xu Huang is also suprior to Yu Jin in every way. Like many others, he require reflex beans if you want him to become unstoppable. Of course with so many people needing reflex beans, it could be hard to decide. Give Xu Huang 6 of them if you want to see the results.
Man Chong – He can heal, use him!!!
Liu Ye – He’s the only catapult you get. Catapults aren’t very accurate or powerful, but they can attack from very far away, and they function just like archers giving you more damage on mounted units. One more thing, he can hit 5 units at once and gets his own exclusive catapult that can poison enemies. He’s an accquired taste. Very unique and fun to use. Some of you might not like him though. He’s hard to level up at first, but once he class changes he can attack 5 units at once. Liu Ye and Zhang Liao are my number one choice for reflex beans. Catapults miss often due to low reflex growth, but if you can give him 9 or more reflex beans, you’ll have better results. Oh yeah, he could also use 9 strength beans. There’s not much competion for these, so I would definitely give those to him as well. If you manage to give him 9 of both beans mentioned above, you’d be crazy not to bring Liu Ye to battle!
Zhang Liao – He’s Zhang Liao!!! He is a little weaker than Xiahou Dun, but like Li Dian, he has good potential. Unlike Li Dian, he’s still quite a worthy addition to your team without using the stats beans on him. My advise, use reflex beans on him to make him on par with Dun. Oh yeah, according to the chinese sites, they recommend getting Zhang Liao when he’s under level 15 for the best results. Enemy levels are based on the average level of your team.
Diao Chan – She’s like a mini Dian Wei, but not quite. She’s really weak and has low HP. She can also use the 2 awesome weapons Dian Wei can use, and has her own special tactics. She has a tactic that can boost other people’s (but not her own) strength. She can remove status affects, when when she’s at her highest class, she can automatically recover and remove status affects on all units surrounding her at the beginning of each turn. she also has a tactic that can suck enemy’s HP and restore her own. Actually, Guo Jia and Jia Xue also has this tactic but it’s inaccurate. I brought this tactic up because Diao Chan can use the shooting stars. That means she can confuse people and have 100% accuracy when she (or Guo Jia and Jia Xue) uses the HP drain move. If you lost Dian Wei, then I suggest you give all your strength boosting beans to Diao Chan and try to get her strength up. Give her 4 luck beans to boost luck, and 13 leadership beans to boost defense growth. It’s boosting her defense that’s the toughest part.
Jia Xue – Another Guo Jia on your side. Nothing wrong with that.
Cao Pi – LAME! Seriously, don’t waste your time on him. You have Xiahou Yuan and Zhang He.
Zhang He – If you don’t want to use Xiahou Yuan, you can use Zhang He. Forget that turd Cao Pi. Without he beans, Zhang He still has suprior luck and reflex compared to Xiahou Yuan. But he doesn’t join as early as Xiahou Yuan.
Sima Yi – Only mounted tactican in the game. Use him. He also has this wind based tactic that can hit pretty much every enemy anywhere on the map. Provided they’re not in places that protects them from wind tactics. It’s pretty cool how you can take a good chunk of many enemies’ HP before you even get near them.
Pang De – If you skipped out on Li Dian and Yue Jin, Pang De is the armor unit to use. He is very powerful. In the "evil" path, Pang De can die, but like Xiahou Yuan, it’s extremely easy to avoid. Just don’t touch Zhou Can, or if you do, make sure you land the final blow killing Zhou Can. Otherwise, you’ll get into a cinematic duel and get killed instead. Also, in evil path, Pang De gets the award for killing the most people via cinematic battles. Don’t bother with beans. Pang De joins too late to make use of them. Besides, he’s quite powerful without them.
Cao Zhang – He’s better than Cao Ren and quite powerful. He’s not too bad, but don’t waste your beans on him since he joins pretty late. Not bad if you need an extra character.
Bonus Hidden Character – This guy is only playable if you choose the "good" path. He is a famous person from Shu. A good character, though you probably already have the same type of unit with better stats by the time you get him. Like Cao Zhang, don’t bother with the beans. He also joins with a special weapon.

ParticipantNice, character ratings. I was wondering how to change classes, I’ll look for those stamp things.
I’m on the Red path, if you noticed at the top. I saved Guo Jia but didn’t save Dian Wei.
Why is Diao Chan even a party member?
Post some battles strategies if you like, anything up until Chapter 3 is fine.

ParticipantIt varies by battle. Most of the big battles have 10-15 people.
Don’t know how he got the picture there.
You should play, just use that link I posted earlier.

ParticipantBTW, Lord Yuan Shu or Taishi Chi, if you want to use my information, make sure you check it for spelling and gammar. I spent most of my time thinking about the game and I didn’t bother to check on the other things. Plus, it’s just too long and I’ve spent 4 hours on this forum typing out info already.
About the secrets, I’ll have to look through you guide before I can tell you what you don’t have. This will take some time. I’ll share some extra knowledge with you. You know when you kill someone, you get a item sometimes? If that enemy is killed by an NPC (like Guan Yu for example) you still get the item for yourself, so no need to worry about that.
Also, if you fill up the entire secret weapons chart, you can get all the secret weapons when you start a new game. I forgot who, but the guy in that teaches you how to play the game will ask you if you want them after he asks you if you want him to teach you how to play. first he asks you if you want him to teach you, then he asks if you want the weapons and stuff, finally, he asks you if you like a level boost. What’s even cooler is that with all the special weapons, you can get them again as you play through the game!
Now to fill out the special weapons chart, you have to play the game at least twice. Once in the good path, another in the evil path. Also, you are required to have some people die (Dian Wei, Guo Jia, Xiahou Yuan, and Pang De) in order to get them. The good part is that you can make a save in that stage, let them die, finish the chapter to get the item, then reload the chapter and save the character before going forward. You only need to fill out the weapon chart for it to work. You can check out the weapon chart by clicking the imperial seal icon I believe.
Some chapters can be skipped. The pursuit of Dong Zhou can be skipped if you picked the other option. You only need to attack Yan Zhou once (or twice) if you win the first or second battle without escaping.
How to Save Dian Wei
Saving Dian Wei is probably the hardest character save in the game. There are a few options on how to do this, and I’ll cover them all. first of all, during the character preperation screen, you might want to decide on who you want to bring. The order in which you pick them decides on who will appear where and when. So pay close attention to that. Cao Cao, Dian Wei, and Cao Hong can’t be changed. Remember to equip a horse (the one you get from Li Ru) on either Cao Cao or Dian Wei. This extra movement will help them. Although I think Cao Cao will make better use of it since he’s least surrounded.
One of the strategies I like to use is to keep Dian Wei safe and on a tent that can heal him. Make you character stick together to allow a safe path for Dian Wei. Being on tents and forts alos increase defense. Oh yeah, equiping a leather shield on Dian Wei also reduces damage. Just kind of slowly fight your way out of the chapter. The biggest problem is Hu Cherr, zhang Xiu, and Jia Xue. Oh, you might want to add a little extra fire power by making Cao Anmin (I think it’s him) appear. Cao Cao needs to be near the western exit though for him to appear. Having him appear is probably the last thing you can think about when you’re using this strategy. You have to slowly fight your way out towards the west stopping in the forts for defense. Oh yeah, the sand bag things also increase defense.
Another strategy is to move Dian Wei out of the camp site. You see, the stage is a big camp site surrounded by a wooden fence. There are exits on all 4 sides. The closest exit is the southern one for Dian Wei. Here’s the thing, you can have other character help Dian Wei clear a path to the southern exit and have Cao Cao himself flee the western exit. Sometimes I like to take a huge loop with Cao Cao and have him exit from the west, but instead of fleeing, run down to the southern exit to help with clearing out enemies. Once Dian Wei makes it out, then I flee. If Dian Wei is no longer within the camp site when Cao Cao reaches the exit, it counts as him being saved. If not, we move onto the next strategy. BTW, I don’t think the eastern exit counts. This strategy can help you get Cao Anming out fast to act as an extra target/attack strength.
The final strategy is similar to the one above except Dian Wei doesn’t escape from the camp site by the time Cao Cao flees. When Cao Cao reaches the exit and Dian Wei is still alive and within the camp site, Cao Hong and the others appear and you have a little talk. Choose to charge back into the camp site with the 2 or 3 extra guys to save Dian Wei. If you choose to correct option, the winning condition changes and you have to get Dian Wei to the western exit. I like this strategy the least since it’s slow. You have to cross a river and then come back with your reinforcements. Of course all three strategy involves making only Cao Cao flee while leaving the rest to fight with Dian Wei.
I think the second strategy is the easist. Just remember to carefully equip your characters before going to this battle.

ParticipantThis game sounds awesome by the way…
IMO, this game is the best in the series. Legend of Heroes is the oldest so it’s the worst, but still not that bad. I like how these guys are actually kind of hard compare to other strategy rpgs. It really does make you use your head instead of going into random battles to beef up your stats and slaughter everything in sight.
I’ll post strategies later. Since I want to help translate as many menus as possible in the game. Not to mention I have read through Taishi Chi’s strategies to see what he missed.
I’m a little shocked you guys don’t know how to take screen shots. It’s actually very easy. Press the Prt Scrn button on your keyboard (it’s the first button to the right of F12), and then open an image program like MS paint. Right click on the mouse and choose paste to paste the image in paint and save it. Then just convert it to a JPG and upload it.

Here’s an image of the shop. The first 3 items I’m sure require no explaination. The green plant cures poison. The blue plant cures confusion. The green with a yellow bulb cures paralysis. The Redish one cure silence. The one with the roots is a cure all herb that cures any and all of the 4 problems above. The final gold thing is the class change item. again, you can buy these buy the time you’re in chapter 2. Oh yeah, the class change item also acts as a full HP restore item. When you class change while your HP is low, it fully restores your HP. Of course this side affect can only be used twice in the game. I recommend class changing a soon as possible.
