ModeratorIdeally, soon everyone will be able to make the version of DOAE they want using a spiffy user-friendly tool :)
I’d love to see a newer game. If the game’s going to be modified anyway… sure, I’d like to see a couple of the classics return, but if it’ll make the gameplay more challenging I don’t mind losing a few of them.

ModeratorSo far, so good.

The man himself. I gave him a portrait with Huo Hu’s shifty-eyed look as well as a full beard. I might give a bit of tile editing a try and modify Liu Bei’s portrait for him :) So far as I know, though, no other officer has this combination of features and a white background (giving Cao Cao a nifty purplish-and-red robe, which fits him).

Chen Deng’s received a bit of a boost, but I haven’t decided whether or not to give him leveling.

Cao Cao has several good generals starting off, though none are fantastic. Cao Ren and Hong have 230 and 215 strength respectively – I’ll probably tone them down a bit. Ren’s somewhat more intelligent – a bit less than Guan Yu as is.
Yue Jin and Li Dian replaced the Songs, as there was really no place else to put them. Yue Jin’s a mid-range fighter with decent INT, Li Dian has a bit more INT but less strength and less soldiers.
All 4 starting generals level right now, so I’m going to have to turn the difficulty on the YTs up a bit.
Also, now the editor has sprite-picking. It’s working better than I thought it would, actually – but no coloration yet.

ModeratorJames: On your sprite-sheet site (say that 10 times fast) , you have the value 21 listed as both Padded Villager and Zhu Zhi. Which one is it? I’m planning to incorporate the sprite-sheet in today, if I can.
Tonight I’m going to expand on my Wei mod using the program to test and make sure it’s working properly. Then I’ll write up some documentation for new users, and probably implement an auto-save function.

ModeratorThe Jia Xu thing was mostly for if a Yuan Shu mod was made for DoaE. Jia Xu seems like a likely choice for a strategist that’d be willing to serve him, with his track record. I figured he’d switch out for Zhuge Liang if Yuan Shu’s the hero :)

ModeratorI’m looking for it now, but I wanted to tell you I found the "pet tiger" line :)
It’s at 2B560.
Pang Tong’s line is at 2EA20.
"so you dare invade
Jing Zhou? Take
this!"
I don’t have enough knowledge of the context to build up my table any more… but here’s what I’ve got so far.
I tried generating tables from my knowledge of some values, but they seem to jump around a bit. They increase over the set of words, but sometimes by 2 or 3, it seems.
Niahak
ModeratorI don’t know where Pang Tong’s dialogue is – I didn’t even remember him having much to speak of!
Your best bet might be to find a sample of something unique-ish he says, add the appropriate words to your dictionary (going off the values I posted before) and search for those. Otherwise, I can take a look tomorrow.

ModeratorYes, it definitely should – but I’m trying to cover all the bases just to make sure.
I really have no idea what would cause this…
/edit: Ah-ha! It looks like it might’ve been the borked name size that cropped up in an interim version. That would do it. If name size is reported as being too small (like the Sima Yi problem you mentioned, James) then it wouldn’t know how many FFs to put at the end of an officer.
Name sizes are fixed now: new version up for download here.
It includes a few fixes, a couple tweaks. The drop-down lists don’t sort as they should, but I’m working on that for a future release. I’m probably done for the night.
CCG: If you want me to see if I can repair your game, I can take a look tomorrow. It’s probably an offset issue in a place or two… depending on how many officers you renamed.

ModeratorThat’s rather strange. The new system should be more robust, since it uses pointers and not a FSM to find the officer locations.
If you saved a file with the old editor, then reopened it in the old one, I could see it creating problems… but I’m not sure what might’ve caused the one you ran into. I’ll do a bit of testing and see what I can find, sorry about that!
What all did you do to the ROM (i.e. did you make it with the old version first, what kind of values did you change, etc)?

ModeratorNew version of the program is out!
Version 0.2 fixes a sizable parsing error and brings in the Pirate. Also has a spiffy logo! Thanks to James for helping me figure out the error of my finite-state-machine-parsing ways.
Niahak
ModeratorJust wondering, are you also going to change friendlies around? Zhang Fei’s Int is awfully low, while some might consider Guan Yu’s and Zhao Yun’s too high.

ModeratorPMed you at SOSZ. I’ll add the entire soldier list for the next release, thanks!
All the tables are reloaded on restart, in the version I IMed you it’ll more gracefully error (giving you an "unknown value" in the list rather than crashing).

ModeratorJames: mind if I incorporate the image previews into the officer editor? I’ll credit you, of course. That must’ve been quite a bit of work.
I don’t know if I’ll be able to do the colors too (without having a separate image for each combo)… but it’d help a lot.

However, then there’s " civilization " (probably 9EBE) or " civilization" (~BEBE) or "civilization" (FE9E).
These are all just mildly educated guesses – I know the other table a bit better.

ModeratorJames: There is no way this can corrupt an existing ROM unless you try to export over it (the file is opened in Read mode only), but I can understand your reluctance.
Apparently it’s a bit more stable than I gave it credit for. I admit I haven’t done any testing since I fixed those two bugs.
CCG: There’s no easy way to tell you which numbers go with which sprites. The officer sprites are made up of 4 tiles each so that would be a heck of a task… I don’t even know how many distinct sprites there are. I could set it up so a sprite entry will tell you what officer they came from, but it won’t account for, say, townspeople sprites (or Wang).

ModeratorI don’t actually know which stats for the pirate are valid – that’s why I left them out of this version of the tool.
And I used the leveling scheme for tactics – I had a hunch that they wouldn’t make it any more complicated than they’d have to.
Have you tried out the tool yet? Some of what you said implies you haven’t :)
