actually, after re-inventing the wheel countless times (c/asm across a half dozen platforms over the years), i decided to try out glbasic. tried it, bought the pro version fairly quickly due to how polished it seems and such. also, with the pro version you can inline / embed C directly… and since i'm a C monger … <3
glbasic is… a fairly straight forward basic. doesn't really attempt to do GUI stuff so it's not a VB clone or anything. it preprocesses the glbasic source into C++ code, and compiles the C++ code.
if i didn't do glbasic, it would have been C with SDL (which i have plenty of experience with).
i was going to eventually ask what language ya wrote the doe editor in….

this isn't so much of a construction kit, although it shouldn't be too difficult to modularize it. was prolly gonna end up doing a RPN calculator / interpreter for all of the formulas so they could just be seen in plain text and easy to fiddle with. that would just leave the main china map as the only non-user editable resource currently prolly.

note that this isn't an NES rom kind of thing any of like that – it's a from scratch thing with me writing all of the code :). straight up pc/linux/osx and eventual ios target … soooo…. i'm not bound by any of the NES / original limitations and such. i've got close to 20 years of coding experience… so… i can't imagine there being much in the way of limitations.
i'm still mostly getting a lot of base line stuff filled in / proof of concept-ed. then glue those parts together for an actual game.
the battle combat maps are prolly next on the todo list. means writing an editor and all of that.

up to yuan shu area.
so far it seems like a decent adaptation of the original to a diff plot line without changing the difficulty too much… yet requiring slightly different strategies.

I will possibly play through it again after a bit. While waiting for an update, I started the Yuan Shao mod. Am up to the Yuan Shu area in it.

He was actually one of the easiest bonus fights, outside of coming back to huangsongfu after entering wei.
re: lou yang gates first DZ trek
as a kid it was a lot of back and forth treking. and i'll admit that i still usually end up having to make at least one trip to refill. while it's kind of handy as a forced grind, it is a tad irritating, kinda like the wei castle fights (or possibly mid shu). i guess, also, with some of the ambushes you've set up, the mid to late wu can also require some back tracking… but… having gullwings by those points makes it less annoying.
Lou Yang is the capital. While it doesn't serve as a major point in the game, it's important otherwise. It should be well guarded. Maybe reduce it to one more difficult gate ?
if midnight is paying attention – you can always run from a fight you surprise the enemy with, right? can you find the code that checks for that bit and just always take the 'surprise bit was set' jmp ?
being able to always run makes the treks back and forth not so bad. i've also re-noticed in this game how the rng for RE's loves to troll you. Going somewhere? That'll be an encounter ever 1-4 steps. Looking for a fight? It'll take 5 screens worth of movement to get one.
re: sima yi battle
lu xun or jiang wei's 255 agility means putting them in the van and getting an early thwart. lu xun being preferred for his higher int in hoping the thwart lasts longer. i will admit the sima yi battle was one of the hardest so far… although the second final fight looks to be rough as well :).
it took a few tries, and i stuck to thrwart / zeal / pp's. i believe you had just updated to multizeal which made it friendlier. after clearing out ansha generals (if any?) …not sure if i tried to keep thwart up the entire time, or only when it was time to kill someone who had revive.
so far, hardest fights that stick out are the scarves wizards at blacksmith's house (possibly hardest required), spirit guys at the wei shortcut, the water elementals gave me some trouble as well, tiger wang (even when doing YS first), and re-capturing jingzhou was a serious pita.
fights that were supposed to be hard that are indeed hard would be the current sima yi fight, end of wu, and much of wei. so that'd good.
blacksmith and jingzhou recapture were only few i'd even remotely suggest as toning down just a tiny bit… but… since i'm not a pro player and i beat'em without save state abuse… they're prolly fine.

beat the game. stabby stab bwahahahaha! i was laughing for a while :) … same with the souvenir guy.
I'll definitely have to give it another play through later. See how the different changes affect things and such.

The gate was still on the hard side. Think I ran out of TP on it or maybe the next one with undead slave (inferno just would NOT hit).
Zou Ci was pretty easy. He was slow as snot (agi 5 i think?)… so… took out his follower first.
I think I beat the fight leading up to the first 'bwahahahaha!' with jiang wei as tactician and a lot of ansha. I usually don't care for ansha much, but it was the first and only fight i've used it in so far.
The rest of the time it's been thwart + zeal + pounding.
Party is typically ZL as tactician, Lu Xun as the van, zhang liao, zhao yun, gan ning, lu bu as the rest, with jiang wei just hanging out as backup. i could prolly easily put JW in the active party (maybe even replacing lu bu), but haven't really needed to. MTP is topped out at 166.
Lu Xun's agi for me has been 255, and he's red hare'd. its *very* rare he doesn't go first, so an early and persistent thrwart isn't hard to manage. spirit riders …. and.. i think some other 255 agi enemy swarms are hit/miss naturally.
currently at the gate before lou yang, did some wei general farming and swapped out lu xun with sima yi…. since agi is 255 still and he's got just slightly better stats. haven't really felt the need to swap any other party members out although a few options have been a tad interesting.
given the cost of damage causing tactics and the relatively high int scores for everyone in the area, trying to cast damage spells to victory doesn't seem that viable a strategy. never has been in late game from original to mods anyway.
severely reducing tp cost of the damage inducing spells would make it more viable, but prolly throws the balance way out of whack… particularly for the mid to early late game.
hopefully within a day or two i can look out over Mr. Bwahahaha's mangled corpse and utter my own victorious "BWAHAHAHAHA!". gonna be busy for the next 20 hours so… dunno when i'll get to finish it off.
and yes, i remember to go find the bonus fight after the game is over :)

interesting. handy for player to save TP usage, kinda interesting when enemy does it to themselves as well. them spirit riders doing zeal + guard is interesting… but… multi-zeal is prolly why i was able to mop the floor with the spirit riders ?
BUG:
after taking out the 'short cut spirit riders' … and had already gotten through the first gate towards the encampment battle… upon starting the encampment battle it flickers screen, does sfx for entering battle, fades to black, then gets froze with a stuck music note as well.

both versions do it. i can enter spirit rider fight no prob, but the encampment battle freezes.
haven't seen any mess ups on general portraits, and have seen several of the new ones :)

extra curious: entering / leaving ru-nan doesn't play foot step sounds. other places still do. has it always been this way in the game in relation to sima yi thunder double encounter stuff ?

in the last encounter i did this for fun, and she managed to kill someone eventually… being forced to do it…. is… amusing and annoying :P

sunquan/dengai fight done.
went back to trap house near gongsun zan and took that out (huangsongfu?)
started an expedition into wei from xu zhou, took out cao pi on the bridge then thought i might be sequence breaking so headed back.
took guangling or whatever it is (first intended wei castle) … hit a bug.
the guy that tells you which city is is claimed to be zhangliao and wanted to join, i let him.
then recruited the real zhang liao (same dialog for both). both sprites disappeared from the town.
in the billeting the fake one… well.. corruption :). viewing him or the general above causes more graphical corruption as well. the town guard is apparently 72str / 36int / 121 soldiers and a corrupt name and corrupt portrait.

the splint mail offers more defence ?

for some reason, the splint mail i have on two of my generals offers more defense than the plate mail.

just *barely* won it. i kinda knew something was coming (a bridge ? oh noes!)… but… uhh wow :)
was down to 1 tp for the last 7 rounds of the fight, lost a general, and had to hope / pray / power pill my way through the wizards.
thank god you didn't give them deluge or zeal :3 … woulda been about impossible with how i first approached the fight (wrongly, at that… didn't see the word wizard, thought they'd all be pirates heh).

never felt comfy with that. a lucky hit and you're down a man (or woman) :(
