Moderatornot appropriate here, but maybe in one of the character mods…
is it possible to have guan yu / zhang fei (or their counterparts) take over jingzhou… and then re-acquire them within the jingzhou castles ?
it's just character renaming, and this way ya could give them the new portraits. how to wrap that up in story text would be confusing. maybe get to the two castles and have guy on thrown say 'i was put in charge by so and so … so they could go take revenge' ?

Quote:I have play tested the battles a lot myself so as to make them VERY difficult but not so much that a player will have to resort to uber-save state hacking.there have been a few mods out there that usually ended up with me resorting to save state'ing the start of every round of combat :(. it's enjoyable to play a doe mod that's still a challenge but doesn't require perfect rng.
Quote:zhuge wan fu / jue yan reeither of those would have been *way* too much heh. although a jue with something like da re… to make him a one hit wonder ? nah – it's still early in the game, somewhat easy is more than acceptable.
Quote:This has been the hardest part about the mod and I would say in general. Making 'progressive' difficulty while still keeping it fresh has been very difficult to do without totally gimping the game and flow.that's a struggle all rpg makers deal with … and the thing the players notice the most. so far, so good!
Quote:Xing and Bao billetableJust took Wu Castle (with Zhuge Jin in it). My Lvl38 party is Zhao Yun, Meng Huo, Ling Tong, Zhang Bao, Lu Bu, Zhuge as tactician, and li hui hanging along for the ride. Now that I've taken Wu, I'll prolly try to see if I can scrounge up some more Wu tacticians.
Fa Zheng and Pang Tong have been tempting, and…. i'll prolly need to re-look at Xing's soldier counts to see if he's workable or not. With so many quality generals abounding, I've found myself gravitating towards the higher agility ones…. as well as mostly being able to just pound my way through areas. Hell, I wonder what guan ping and mi zhu are up to after all this time :3
With the game progressing more towards tacticians as is usual, we'll see how the rest of wu and some wei goes.

edit: just looked at fa zheng / mi zhu / guan ping / pang tong … soldier counts are entirely too low to be useful. i'll prolly stick with my party like it is for a while heh.

Moderatorthankfully, wu invasion was fairly low agility, so cemain was easy to keep up. a dozen power pills later and jingzhou is
liu beilu bu's once again!the liu bei dialog just after lu bu chewed him out doesn't quite flow correctly. it still has lots of original text which… doesn't… quite chime with being berated by lu bu. ie: after the 'dont wanna be like you' spiel.
so far so good, time to go see if zhou yu is still a pita.
ps
some hindsight – i took out the wizards to talk to swordsmith before taking chengdu.

Moderatorusing oct 31st ver now
just zeal roasted some wei invaders…. although cao cao was able to zeal yuan before the first cemian (at least it wasn't dun!). now to figure out how to handle wu invaders.
re: lu bu int
i'd be fine with a lower int / ansha resistant lu bu
re: iron ore
nope, had to game genie the iron ore. also had a chest re-close early on (the dong zhou mace in cave).

Moderatorre: lu bu high INT
it's a tad odd given the typical story / history, but in a 'rise of lu bu' mod, i have no real qualms with it. He does have higher INT than Zhao Yun, which is amusing :). It's kind of handy to have him with high INT, particularly since I'm looking for a casual yet interesting game… and many DOE mods up the difficulty resulting in a lot of save file restarts or save state battles. I have yet to get into late game, so dunno how it'll turn out.
speaking of save state battles, so far I've not resorted to them. about the only battles i'll save state with are random encounters with high INT ppl I wanna run from (and when I'm really sleepy .. meaning i don't wanna deal with it that much more heh).
re: pang tong / chengdu
Yeah, by / after chengdu i had cemian so it wasn't so bad. even before hand it was possible, just irritating (as is supposed to be).
re: yan yan / beat shortcut before or after luo
i… honestly can't recall. trying to recall how the game flow went, i ran into the shortcut… not sure if i beat it or died. if i died, i didn't come back until after taking the camp just after ore mountain. i just can't recall :(
re: zhuge liang fight
I believe I was using Guard at the time and just whittled him down (yay for a high INT enemy without wanfu!).
re: progress through the game so far
i'm not sure if i took care of iron ore or chengdu first. i know i was debating iron ore afterwards… just not sure how it actually happened. i wanna say i did chengdu last. i recall dealing with shamoke more than i do the wizards… and i know i cemian'd the wizards.
i now gotta take back jingzhou. fights there are much harder than chengdu… which is a change from the game flow of the original heh. not sure which direction i'll go first, prolly take out the wu invaders first…. i'll have to look at my tacticians again and decide a proper route.
am around lvl35 with 8k troops on lu bu. don't think grinding is very feasible atm (60 fights to lvl up?)… we'll see.
ps – do enjoy the alternate rebel forces during scripted fights :3. oh, and not sure if doe2.0 had it or if you added it, but thanks for keeping the idea of being able to billet guan/zhang sons.

ModeratorYup, found Diao Chan. She was my tactician for a good while.
re: cao hong portrait, i've enjoyed some of the not quite shapened portraits so far… although most of them are well done :)
Re: 'cant let lu bu run free' — original plot and current is both to reign in yuan shu… but liu bei's text ignores the yuan shu factor and only mentions lu bu. which… you already have lu bu in your party or something ?
re: hua xiong – i'm pretty sure he was growing in army…. whatever. doesn't matter ?
re: start / food / etc — i actually had to grind a bit and also all of the exploring is what caused me needing to buy food :). Yes, it started with food, and yes I did reset immediately when it gave the free lvl up. Love me some 50+ lvls down the road heh.
And actually, the start took a couple of tries just to even make it to xu zhou just so i could save. some very bad random encounters along the way heh
re: zhao fan castle fight. actually, jian yong from the start of the game fit the bill nicely for mislead (although… there are similar yuan shao area tacticians that would suffice as well).
i'm approaching what was chengdu in the original, and have noted changing up tacticians a few times along the way in order to deal with the situation at hand. btw: pangtong in the shu area is highly irritating (like he's supposed to be hehe)
the last appearance of DZ was nicely done.
i have hit the tactician-chest bug so will need to cheat up some iron ore after taking chengdu (the swordsmith house fight is on the harsh side atm… sitting around 5k troops on lu bu). dunno if they're related, but i also found a second yan yan out and about, so i've got two yan yan's in my roster now.
the shortcut around iron mountain with ambush played out nicely as well. not too much, but enough to still require some planning.
still haven't decided how to tackle swordsmith house. if i pick up ce-main, that'll prolly be it… although if someone still offers guard, that might work as well. we'll see…

perhaps the only semi-interesting complaint i have is lu bu's sky rocketed intelligence upon final join. i've yet to go through the rest of the game, but that seems a tad abusive. granted, it *is* the rise of lu bu! :D

ModeratorIn jingzhou now.
The Wang battle to keep people out of JZ is about perfect although perhaps still a bit on the rough side (only have doubt atm)… assuming you really want to stop ppl from going into JZ first :). I always liked being able to branch in the game heh. Too bad the original didn't beef up the Yuan Shao area if ya chose JZ first, etc.
The Huang Zhong ambush caught me off guard, lost a couple generals in the fight hehehe.
In DZ's area, I ran across Cai Yong, but he wasn't in any gate/castle battles ? Oh, and when I restarted my game, it was time to chase down Yuan Shu…. but Liu Bei was saying we can't let Lu Bu run free. I understand what's going on due to prior experience, but it seems like a writing goof?
Speaking of writing, been enjoying the humor :).
Oh, and in the Oct 29th ver ya took away Hua Xoing's growing army (had just started to chase Yuan Shu and noted he wasn't growing anymore heh), kinda borked my party in doing so :D (easily recoverable tho with other generals).
The opening of the game was a nice improvement IMO. I actually had to buy food *gasp* hehe. Also learned Liu Bei shouldn't enter Wei hehehe. Some warning woulda been nice :).
Similarly, the house that bridges DZ/YS area with Gongsun Zan was a surprise…. but … that at least was warned about.
Saw the castle north that couldn't be reached quite yet, was very curious hehehe.

Left off with needing to do the Zhao Fan castle fight. One hit kill Lu Bu + AnSha tactician is… a brutal update to the standard Lu Bu fights you've presented all along. I like the change up in strategy it'll involve. Dunno if I'll grind for Mistrust or if just try to take out the AnSha guy while Lu Bu is Doubt'd. I'm currently lvl 17, btw.
Overall, enjoying it.

Moderatorplaying the oct 27th version.
just entered chang'an.
so far it's been good. not too overtly evil, and not too easy. overworld and basket room tile mishaps are easy enough to ignore.
the use of resurrects in the DZ area have been nice, particularly with the one-hit lu bu kills heheh.

i have hit *one* bug so far…. and given the nature of it i wonder if it's a doe bug at that. didn't have a full party (just fighters + strat), lvl'd up, and it told me that huang zhong had xxx number of soldiers (same as cheng deng i think?)…. i've obviously not gotten him yet, let alone he's obviously not in the party.
—
will there be any problems moving from the oct27th ver to the 29th ver within my current game (using in game saving functionality, not save states) ?

i've debated streaming my play through to justin.tv, but…. dunno if there's a point :D

Moderatorre: charge
I farmed province 10 for items for a while as Ma Teng once. I'd take the province, leave a strong war general behind (Ma Chao or whoever), the enemy would attack… and I believe the battle would usually end up with the CASTLE PLAINS MOUNTAINS … thus I could quickly charge with my general into the advancing enemy to more quickly widdle down their numbers without fear of busting through to the other side. When the enemy was low on soldiers, I'd flee then immediately re-attack. Yay for AI abuse.
I believe I eventually ended up just leaving the general there to fend off attacks as a means of depleting enemy soldier / trained soldier counts. Believe at the same time my "replenishing province" had a constant supply of 100 trained / armed soldiers i'd just give / shuffle to the returning high war general. Again, yay for AI abuse.
Charge's randomness makes it a fairly risky thing to use in general. Will you inflict a lot of damage, or little and get repelled / break through ? Will you kill the other general ? Will you die yourself ? In Le'Emporer, charge was much more useful.
I do know that I'll be wanting to adjust charge / simul attack stuff. How simul works in latter rotk's makes a bit more sense… but with the math of rotk2 it'd make it useless. but again, that should be for another thread :D

ModeratorGlad to see there's some interest in the project.
I'll get a new thread going (including responses to some existing comments) the next time I have an update so as to not continue to hijack the greetings thread.
Went through DOE, DOE2, and several DOE hacks. I never did beat doe-caocao though… got into Jing Zhou and decided the battles really wanted save state abuse which destroys the game :(. Author did a great job with the mod though… it really kicks ass.
Still haven't picked up the paper back set for the novel, really need to. Done plenty of reading online, but actually just reading through the novel would be neat.
TY for warm welcomes, btw.

Moderator'lo!
Been lurking for years.
I've been slowly but steadily working on a fan remake of rotk2. The goal is a better rotk2 :D … while not straying too far from rotk2 itself.
So far, I've managed to get a lot of the data entry done (I'd guess 2/3rds or more)…. and have been slowly getting to work processing this information and getting a functional (albeit not pretty) UI out of it.
I'll be targeting PC/Mac/Linux to start with. Game will undoubtedly be free due to the fact that I'll be taking a lot of user input on it (it's a fan remake after all).
Still have a lot of general data entry to go (date of birth, loyalty to wu/shu/wei/etc, personality traits, areas they can be found as free generals, etc) but the base stats are there. Data entry is tedious, and coders hate doing it, particularly when it comes to 400some generals.
Scenario 1 data entry is mostly done.
Top things to do in the coming couple weeks are to finish up Scenario 1 data entry, add some general purpose general selection screens (ie: for who will work on the current selected task), and to write a utility / editor for laying out all of the provincial war maps. Oh, and possibly denote territory control on the map of china screen.
Anyhoo, eventually after things get fully interactive… i'll be open to suggestions / ideas, and i'll start making active requests for ideas on formulas on what different things do. Let alone the joys of attempting to write an AI … … … …
Progress on the project is very slow and steady. I have a wonky schedule and real life to deal with :) … but things are approaching interactive.
Would LYS be the correct place to start such a hub of activity ? I have zero interest in trying to set up a new forum / etc and attempt to draw ppl there to discuss it. Dunno if here or thescholars or what would be appropriate.
