Xian Zhu Xuande
ParticipantI would say the Chen Pu battle was the hardest in the whole game.
At least it was for me!

Ouch. I just realized that the enemy troop counts are going to get to over 10,000 soon, and my Tiger/Tiger sons are all under 2,000. It looks like I may finally have to upgrade my armor soon. I finished the Zhou You battle with only one An Sha against a general (Guan Xing felt the sting- oops, that rhymed!), and only a Hong Shui or two from the other decent tactician, Kan Ze. This actually worked out pretty luckily for me, since in my last DOAE playthrough, Zhou Yu literally Hong Shui’ed my guys every turn (I was rather high leveled for the time, though I hadn’t learned Ce Mian yet to stop the rapage). Actually, since I hadn’t played the game in a few years, I kind of thought he was supposed to Hong Shui your guys often; this playthrough showed it’s actually quite random, as Yi Xin was the star here. I was also extremely fortunate for Zhou Yu to attack one of my guys rather than Wan Fu himself when he was reduced down to around 500 soldiers. As with most battles, I abused Bei Ji and Ji Rhou (before Bei Ji, Fu Bing worked surprisingly well when I could actually get it pulled off). Oh, and I seriously bought many smokepots, even gullwinging a few times for special smokepot shopping sprees- so far, that was the main expense of my game, and kind of a fun little challenge.
By the way, Xian Zhu Xuande- are you by any chance the lord of Kongming.net? I have gone to that site for DOAE1 and 2 related things, it’s rather good. Also, under Biographies, I remember seeing Liu Bei with (Xuande) listed next to his name. Perchance, is Liu Bei a more simplified Chinese name for Xian Zu Xuande?

ParticipantAs far as I know, Liu Bei’s full name is Liu Bei Xuande, just like Zhuge Liang is otherwise also known as Zhuge Kongming.
Cos in ancient times, the people’s names consist of 2 components. For Liu Bei’s case, his is Liu Bei and then Xuande.
Cao Cao is Mengde, Zhao Yun is Zilong etc etc.. And I believe Lord Yuan Shu is Gonglu?
Please correct me if I’m wrong

ParticipantWell, I did it. I look forward to being the 4th person listed on Kongming.net to have completed the lowest level challenge. Even cooler still, I am now the second person to do it with no Pang Tong or power pills, in the same company as the lord himself. Don’t get me wrong- this was not easy. That said, it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be. First off, I just want it to be known that smoke pots were my best friend. As for the action, I completed the game with the same party I always do: the standard party of the five tiger generals (well, Guan Xing and Zhang Bao are the sons of Tigers, but whatever) with Zhuge Liang as strategist. I even used the same strategy for Si Ma Yi as normal. It involves using Guan Xing with his Chi Tu Ma (he is a very fast character, and usually gets the first turn) to cast Ce Mian, then I have the other four Be Ji themselves. Next turn, I have my 4 powered-up generals wreak havoc on Si Ma Yi while guan Xing then Bei Ji’s himself. From thereon, Until Si Ma Yi falls, my five guys all gang up with physical attacks on Si Ma Yi, with Guan Xing using Ce Mian as soon as it runs out each time. Once Si Ma Yi is history, my guys turn their focus to Cheng Yu, using a Ce Mian or two if there is enough TP left. Once the two tacticians are gone, they all go apespit with only phsysical attacks on the remaining three goons, using a Jin Xian to heal when necessary. Again, the same strategy I use when my guys are even at level 51. The first two Si Ma Yi battles, however, weren’t going so smoothly for me. Oh well, maybe I should try a lowest level run of Destiny of an Emperor 2, since I seem to enjoy this kind of pain/pleasure. It pays to play!

ParticipantWhere are the uncompressed screen shots, CraigLovesNintendo?
I’d like to add you to Kongming’s Archives.
Guan Xing may very well be the best choice for Chi Tu Ma, if you use him in your party. His agility is 175, but because of the way Chi Tu Ma works, he essentially becomes 255. A general’s agility with Chi Tu Ma = Officer’s Agility + Officer’s Agility * .5), capped at 255. That means Chi Tu Ma only gives Jiang Wei a boost of five agility points. A party might be more efficient with Guan Xing using Chi Tu Ma and Jiang Wei providing backup support (as he will also be brutally efficient with an agility of 250). It is worth noting that Sima Yi and Cao Pi both have an agility of 250, too.

ParticipantI sent some stuff to the Lord’s email address about two nights ago. I can also send it to an address of yours if you like. The only thing is that I didn’t send a save state. Instead, I sent a save file where file 1 is me at Luo Yang where all I have to do is talk to Liu Bei to end the game, and the second one is at Xu Zhe where the sons are killed and only Si Ma Yi remains. Let me know what I can do for you, I’m really excited to be up there with the likes of you guys.

I basically just need your final party screenshot (as featured for the rest of us who have been posted there). And like the Lord, you are no Power Pills and no Pang Tong? Anything else?

ParticipantNobody has cleared it on the highest challenge level.
"You cannot use any shops, ever."
March 3, 2008 at 6:53 am #19436UltraCraig64
ParticipantNot using any shops ever is just ridiculous, if not for the fact that no gullwings can be used. Also, I depended on smoke pots to get me through many later areas. As for lower armor, as consequence of not being able to buy any, that would be horrid for the tougher boss fights. Weapons is the easiest sacrifice, as the found ones tend to rank among the best for any given point. I beat the game with no power pills and no Pang Tong, also I don’t know if this is considered an accomplishment as well but I skipped the last Lu Bu fight (the one in Shu). This was achieved by simply not taking a single step on the fields of Shu without a smoke pot going. It was a bit of a pain, but it felt awesome to accomplish such a crazy feat. In fact, the only random battle I fought was Han Zhong in order to get the bridge built to take the back entrance for that final Yellow Scarves battle (I wonder if it’s even possible to beat the front one at the lowest level). And that was only like 6 experience points. So no Pang Tong, no Power Pills, and if you consider it, then no Lu Bu Shu encounter. To think, if I could have only managed my way through that front battle with the Yellow Scarves, I would have also had no random encounters. Oh well. I wonder if the Lord got my stuff. Otherwise, I’ll email you tomorrow James. Now only 4 people in our DOAE circle have done this- what is everyone waiting for?

Keymasterhehe I did I’ve just been messing with the kitchen products site all day, dicking around with 500 dollar vacuums and blenders. I got it though and will make the addition to the site soon enough.

ParticipantI went back and defeated Zhang Jue with a head-on attack with no level-ups once (and posted screenshots — I think Taishi Ci used one of them in his comic). The trick is to get lucky (important) and buy a stock of healing items.
You could do it without weapon shops. The game actually does give you a pretty decent supply of equipment. The only catch is that your gear will be just a little outdated at almost every point in the game so moderate battles will become hard and the very hard battles will become true pains in the ass. Where you really get wailed on is in the Yuan Shao/Jingzhou area without the Wood Hs. That can be brutal.
It would certainly be possible, but it would be the true DoaE challenge.
I guess you gain a decent chunk of experience from beating L

KeymasterYea I think our quests were very similar Craig besides you skipping Lu Bu in Shu.

ParticipantOK, with only that final Si Ma Yi battle left (his sons killed), my total party experience was 287,509 points, which pretty narrowly (about 3,000) edges out the Lord’s total experience of 290, 565. Regardless, I still finished at the same level, 39. It truly is the lowest level one can attain in that game. I’d say our games were very similar, besides the fact that I tend to treasure strength over tactimen. Since I was frugal throughout the whole game and made sure to pick up every item I could, I was able to get maximum armor for my five guys by the time I hit the Xun Yu battle, so that was a nice touch.
