I’ve noticed the text editor’s issues and hope to have them resolved by the end of this weekend. That’ll include an update to grab the officer names from the ROM, ending pointer mixups.

KeymasterYea that will be a cool feature.
One thing about this is that I constantly get the "can’t export because text is too long and will overflow"…but I know that at worst I’m a character or two away on maybe 3-4 lines. Is there that little character limit to work with? I tried taking out about 8 10 characters in an unaltered line and that didn’t help…do I have to alter the lines that caused the overflow instead?

ParticipantThere are two blocks of text in the game, one (earlier) has very little free-space, the second (later) has about 2000 free bytes (and yes, that goes quickly).
If you are not using indexed words your scripts are going to fill the game up quickly and you will generally find you have to reduce the size of other scripts to keep going. If you are intelligent about how you use indexed words you can make good progress (an indexed word uses two bytes and can include a space or, in many cases, a new line, while if it is not indexed it can take up to a byte for each letter).
I use the online text tool I created to assemble scripts (as it gives you visual feedback about the parts of your script and lets you know where bytes are being wasted) and then copy the script I am satisfied into the ROM. Safe frequently; if you enter certain characters incorrectly it will corrupt your ROM.

KeymasterYea I think that’s about all I can do, pay careful attention to where I’m adding / subtracting words / characters and save frequently…the problem I’d have is I’d go through like 20 lines before saving, not smart. I’m starting to make some progress though so…

KeymasterOne strange thing about the pointers. I have one guy say something about Ji Ling and Zhang Xun, how Yuan Shu needs to seek them out and recruit them…and in my game, Ji Ling = Zhao Yun’s role and Zhang Xun = Wei Yan’s role. But I notice when I use this pointers that if you only have half of the name on one line and then the other half on the next line, it doesn’t use it as a pointer! So the guy says
"will need quality
officers like Zhao
Yun and Zhang Xun"

That goes for any indexed word. Gong Sun Qian on one line is indexed, Gong Sun Qian on two lines is not. Chi Tu Ma on one line is indexed, Chi Tu Ma on two lines is not. Never break an indexed word into two parts unless you are okay with spending all the extra bytes (and not having that word tied to an officer profile).
That’s one reason why I suggested using my online tool for a while before entering scripts. It quickly shows you these things and it will save you tons of space in the long run using this tool.
This is also the reason why you saw an unusual large amount of space devoted to variable names in the game itself. I try to write my scripts in such a way that it doesn’t look strange to long names on a line.

ModeratorLooks like the weekend activities of copious amounts of Civ4 and Team Fortress 2, err… I mean… totally legitimate work-sounding chores went on a bit longer than expected. I know more or less how I want to do things programming-wise so as long as my overtime project doesn’t demand too much I should be able to have a release sometime this week.

KeymasterCool man, sounds good. Look forward to it…
So I’ve gotten into the Jing Zhou area with the Yuan Shu mod. I’m trying to get cute with the last Lu Bu battle by allowing him to join you after you beat the 7003 soldier Lu Bu. So I copy pasted the event at the end of the Pang Tong battle there in hopes of Lu Bu joining…
but instead Pang Tong joins again! Better yet…doing this makes this 7003 Lu Bu continue to appear at an astounding rate all the way through Shu!!! hehe what a nightmare, and I have about 5 Pang Tong’s in my billeting now :)
I’m thinking since every recruit has their own specific Event number, I’m going to have to go find Lu Bu’s Yang Zhou recruit Event number and copy paste that. It’ll be the same Lu Bu from that region but if I put his soldiers to Zhang Fei leveling or Guan Yu leveling for example, all should be well :)
and I’ll have to keep the other event there so that Lu Bu stops reappearing!
hopefully this works, here I go…

ParticipantThat’s a cool idea LYS… I hope it works!
That will make for some fun mod options.

KeymasterAh shit…Lu Bu does not have unique Event code for when he joins in Yang Zhou. Not sure what triggers him being recruited then? All of his lines just follow with [End].
Sigh, guess I gotta find a more creative way to do it. Weren’t you saying James that you can get random villagers to do the recruit prompt? If not I may have to switch Lu Bu for one of the Jing Zhou cronies like a Ma or Yi Ji.

Keymaster*groan* I can’t believe switching Lu Bu with Pang Tong (or whoever I’m using as Pang Tong) didn’t click with me.

ParticipantOh yeah… nearly everything that happens with Lu Bu in the Gemsword battle is totally hard-coded. If you add an event the game carries it out, then goes back to the hard-coded outcome (Lu Bu joining, for example). The only way around it, which I could locate, was to display the ending. In retrospect there might be a simple game over event… that would have been even better!
You can get anyone to join. There is a recruit event which allows the speaker to join. I used it in the Cao Cao mod with Liu Shan and Meng Da (Yi Ji and Zhang Song). I don’t think it works in battle, though.

KeymasterYea switching Lu Bu with Pang Tong caused some more problems. I put Guan Yu in for Pang Tong as the Shu Lu Bu fight…but now all the pointers go to Guan Yu instead of Lu Bu! I think I’m going to have to keep that Lu Bu but make it so that he doesn’t die and joins later on (at like Luo Castle for example).
Meanwhile I ran into another weird snag. After you beat Jing Zhou and tell Xu Shu that his mom is ill…instead of telling me about Zhuge Liang…he says the same line as Yi Ji! And he doesn’t move lol! So you can’t continue on…
What would have caused this? All the text altering in Jing Zhou cause the Yi Ji line to flow into Xu Shu’s text? hehe

What do you mean by that, exactly?
I’ll be messing with this fight shortly in the Cao Cao remake.

This sounds like some kind of ROM corruption though…
I can’t imagine why that would happen normally…

This sounds pretty concerning. I don’t see how this would happen normally… but it could be some form of corruption.
If you can’t find another cause, I’d like to see it for DoaTed debugging purposes.
