…and yet I am. There’s one problem, though: after I finished designing the map (using chapter locations as a guide — see ‘Changing the Chapter for the Region’ in the DoaE RH guide) I realized that thirteen of them are effectively offmap despite being chapter >0: (numbering is by DoaEd numbers)
* Four Great Wall regions (10×06, 06×11, 12×06, 06×13)
* The northeast Wu lake (*16×17) — which is technically Wei.
* One region of Wu’s great ocean (*21×19)
* Shu/Wu’s jiaozhi mountains (!10×19, !8×20, !20×09, !10×20, ^8×21, ^21×09, ^10,21)Anything with an *asterisk is all-water, anything with an !exclamation point is all-mountain, and anything with a ^chevron is a copy of 18×17 (Wu’s giant land-whirlpool, one tile north of the center).
Any advice on how to change them into usable regions? I have plenty of regions I can sacrifice because I don’t use them (such as most of Shu, including all fifteen tiles of Luo-through-Chengdu).
Also it’d be great if DoaEd’s map editor was better than dragging one tile at a time; since I’m changing most of the map, dragging one tile at a time is not fun.
…to clarify, here’s the vanilla map with them highlighted (red is problem regions, yellow is unused regions I can sacrifice).
June 13, 2022 at 2:10 pm #54979DragonAtmaModeratorI realize, of course, that you’ll inevitably demand art, so I might as well get it over with and post some faces.
And even if you recognize some of these faces, NO SPOILERS! The rest of the board will have to wait until I officially release something. :(

June 14, 2022 at 8:09 am #54982DragonAtmaModeratorUPDATE: Map layout is from x26710 to x2735C (give or take); each region is two bytes, and the table is 64 characters wide and (presumably) 50 lines long. But it’s not the same without a screenshot, so I dragged one of Wei’s cities up north.
For reference, the all-mountain region is 38 05 and the all-water region is 42 05.
June 14, 2022 at 2:06 pm #54983MiDKnighTModeratorHi Dragon,
Boneduke had looked at replacing the “generic” regions before. I found out how to replace generic grass areas with generic snow for example but I don’t think we reused those areas with complicated stuff. I should have documented replacing generic areas in the RH guide but I did not. Would take some digging if you’re interested.
I think the DoaEditor map change you’re looking for is moving regions around? Ya we never did that but it’s a good idea. Would be pretty hard to do – may need Niahak’s help with that but haven’t talked to him in years.
June 14, 2022 at 3:22 pm #54985DragonAtmaModeratorFortunately, replaced regions is easy (once you figure out which region to replace and with which value); just load up the table I mentioned and replace the old value with the new value. The problem has been fixed on my end, so no worries. I’m not looking forward to redrawing 200 or so regions from scratch, though. :( If you’re up for editing doaed, something similar to MS Paint’s pencil tool would be a vast improvement.
Editing 2×2 blocks would also be nice (4 path tiles -> instant desert), but that’s completely skippable.
Do you know a way of replacing the opening scene (the peach garden oath) with a battle? What about changing the starting spot?
June 15, 2022 at 9:21 am #54986MiDKnighTModeratorThe MS Paint features is above my pay grade with C# – that’s Niahak level stuff.
>>> Do you know a way of replacing the opening scene (the peach garden oath) with a battle?
Sounds cool but don’t know how to do that off hand. There would be a lot of complexity with that. Ie…battle returning you back to the opening scene.
>>> What about changing the starting spot?
That part should be easier. Just look up the starting address at $60-$62 and find in the ROM where it sets that location then change it to another location.
June 15, 2022 at 11:03 am #54987DragonAtmaModeratorIf we’re stuck with the peach garden oath I’ll find a way to make it work, just as I made Gemfire’s starting and ending images apply to Dawn of Ishmeria.
Slow mapmaking will be slow, though; I estimate four regions a day, which means nearly two months to transfer the map to DoaEd. >_<

I thought of an idea. Right after the “peach garden oath” section you could dump the party off into a location where the first step forward triggers a battle. That’s the easiest and best way to do it I think. You can black out the peach garden oath graphics like I did in the Yuan Shao mod and just have some kind of story text.

I just can’t think of a better way to do it with what we have. You already know how to move regions around. Inside of a region it’s just about moving tiles around.
June 16, 2022 at 12:18 pm #54990DragonAtmaModeratorThat’s what I plan on doing, although I may make a map of [REDACTED] to look pretty. I’ve never done that sort of thing, though (I’ve simply pasted images wholesale, which doesn’t work with pink), are you up for giving a quick tutorial on changing the big three brothers graphic? If not, don’t worry; I’m sure I can find it elsewhere.
I probably should have asked it before, but what did the board discover that’s not on doaerhguide?

I believe I found the graphics with Nana and just removed them. Ie… zero’d them out. Of course you could use some graphics wizardry to change the pic if you wanted to. I can’t seem to find the Nana tool around anymore but there are probably other ways to view graphics in the ROM.
EDIT: The location is in the RH Guide Page 3:
Page 03 – Starting Address: 0xC010
0x0C010-0x0C80F: Peach Garden Graphic Part 1
0x0C810-0x0F80F: Portrait bank 2

June 17, 2022 at 9:58 am #54993DragonAtmaModeratorI did know where the big graphic was; I just didn’t know where exactly typing AB CD EF makes tiles AB, CD, and EF appear on the screen. Fortunately, I found the location (355DA to 3571D).
Now all that’s left is finding palette data and assigning them to appropriate tiles.
I’d post a screenshot, but the image is a spoiler and the text is also a spoiler. :(
July 29, 2022 at 2:45 pm #55020BonedukeParticipantWith regards to the 4 great wall regions you mentioned, this was something we tackled a bit in Yuan Shao 3.0 – I won’t post a screenshot of the map to avoid spoilers but you’ll definitely find the snow region in this mod is substantially larger than the original.
But yeah unfortunately any region that is completely generic (e.g. all water, all mountains etc) these are reused everywhere so if you edit one you edit them all. Which is pretty much a non starter.
August 1, 2022 at 1:01 pm #55021DragonAtmaModeratorDon’t worry; as I posed above, it’s not hard to find and change regions; the main issue is that I have to redraw every region by hand (all 64 tiles), and there are a LOT of regions. That’s why I’ve been redoing tile lists to make more sense:
The other issue was a breakthrough in rotk2 modding, so I’m heavily distracted by that. :(
August 30, 2022 at 3:01 pm #55122NiahakModeratorHey all, I’m back-ish at least for now. Life is busy and I can’t make any guarantees about new features (much less any timeframes if I were to implement them – time in front of a computer for DoaEditor stuff would be pretty limited).
From what I recall, the tech involved is pretty limited but it might be possible to rewire to a kind of “paint dropper” feature i.e. you choose the 2×2 terrain you want, and can click-drag across multiple tiles to set all of them to that 2×2 block. Is that what you’re looking for when you say a pencil tool DragonAtma?

Hi Niahak,
Long time no see. Before you write any enhancements let me know and I can check in what I have. I was working on fixing some map / graphics update stuff and add a warp editing screen. Your update sounds cooler so if you’re ready to code I can go ahead and check my stuff in which is not done yet.
