ModeratorYep, Revelations: Demon Slayer. Almost got a copy on the cheap, but that was when I was about to get a DS so I turned it down… stupid lack of GB/GBC support.
Persona 1 is greatness with utterly bizarre translation. I found Persona 2 to be harshness with pretty good translation (‘cept the voices).

ModeratorYeah, you can usually find it used at Gamestops because it got reprinted last year.
Goes for about $30 last I checked.
Or, you could always get it straight from the guys who reprinted it here. It’s $10 more but not getting a craptacular coaster is always nice.

ModeratorAh… Uh, I actually don’t really remember that part too well. It didn’t really interfere any when I played it. You lose points for missing minor stuff (mini rhythm-game type things) and I usually had enough action points to do whatever I wanted.
You mostly use them to explore areas and open treasure chests. Very rarely are they needed to get further (I think the only place was when they were introduced).

ModeratorI played and beat the GBA one. It’s okay, but I wouldn’t say it’s great.
I liked the visual style, a few of the characters, the music and the plot… but the battle system was just tedious.
You use items/swords/etc in battle to heal/attack/etc, but they all have a limited number of uses. You get a long sword, you can use it 30 times. Only one weapon has infinite uses (and only one guy can use it).
The way you level up is to master items. If you use, for example, a long sword 4 times, you will master it. This gives you a bonus to HP and strength.
Also, you can enter "practice mode", where you fight random enemies but your items don’t deplete.
So… yeah. Basically, each time you get a new item, you enter practice mode and master it with everyone. Then you fight more regular battles, get an item or two, practice, et cetera. I always had enough items… but I was always nervous that I’d run out, since you can’t buy any more, you have to find them. It’s not a good feeling to have in a game; the Final Fantasy Legend games did it better.
Although, to be fair, the GBA version did have a couple of bath scenes…

Text Editing
I was thinking about changing various text — such as officer names. Is there any way, Niahak, to add data to one of those strings? I could not figure out how I would add characters to an existing officer name.
Adding characters to an existing officer name would be messy at best. Adding any characters would mean moving everything after that forward one character… spilling into the next guy’s area, etc, etc.
Modifying the text while keeping the same amount of characters wouldn’t be a problem, though.

ModeratorA shooting game called Castle Shikigami 2 was released a couple years ago at an initial price of $10.
It featured a babelfished script, and the voice actors were competent (okay, so only one of them was actually good)… but were so confused that the game is just awesome to play.
"My name is Ko. Beating down evil!"
"I’m an American. I work, pay taxes, and I always vote!"
Half of the actors were just confused and seem unsure of their lines. About a third tried to expand on those lines to give them some semblance of meaning. The rest were somehow confident and read the lines "as intended".
It’s not a bad game in itself, but the voice acting alone was more than worth the $10.
Other than that… I’ve enjoyed the voice acting in only more recent console games, pretty much. I like DQ8’s, because it lends some flavor to the game and was good quality. Rogue Galaxy and Suikoden V are pretty good, too.
Lots of older games had atrocious stuff. Grandia was god-awful. It wasn’t even so bad it was good, I think it went full-circle to being bad and I found it painful to listen to (only 2 characters were almost good; both left the party permanently). Even Growlanser 2 and 3 weren’t that good. I’ve played a couple Japanese games on the Saturn and they are *really* high-quality… but I guess that only reached this side of the pacific recently.
Lots of earlier PC games had good VAs, though. Both Jagged Alliance games, for example, and the Fallouts were pretty decent as well.

ModeratorEditing text is a real pain, because they use a dictionary in DOAE.
Lots of these are 2-letter words with appropriate spacing, like "is ", "he ", "it ", but some are multi-letter ("civilization " for example).
If I figured out the dictionary, it might be possible to edit some… but pirate-talk might be out of the question.

ModeratorThis actually shouldn’t be too hard to do :P The only hard part would be balancing it, really.
Instead of flipping the billeting flags, why not just switch the characters? Rename Guan Yu Huo Hu, give him HH’s stats and portrait, rename Huo Hu Guan Yu and do the same for him ;)
Making an IPS is easy. It’s the same process as applying one, really:
1. Put unmodified DOAE and modified DOAE rom in the same directory
2. Start LunarIPS, pick "Make IPS Patch", and select the appropriate roms to generate the patch from.
Niahak
ModeratorI gave them static values but they should be pretty high (decent for their area). Not sure how high, though.
Niahak
ModeratorHmm, I only realized the billeting thing recently myself. That’ll be problematic if you want to replace the now-weak GY and ZF. I’ll look into it later today if I can; if we’re lucky, it’s just a simple flag. If we’re unlucky, it’s hardcoded so that GY and ZF have special traits (can’t put into billeting, enemies always talk to them, etc).
Niahak
ModeratorI may join in on this.
I used to play one such strategy game called Star Kingdoms, but it’s incredibly lame. Everyone who still plays it has played it for the past 6 years, so everyone has informal alliances, there are informal rules, etc, etc. and it’s stupid if nobody else you know plays.
I also briefly tried out Travian, which is supposed to be pretty big. I was unimpressed.
Niahak
ModeratorHuh. Well, most characters have 2 soldier values. For the generals you fight, they’re different; for ones you don’t they’re the same. I gave Jiang Wei his "you-fight-him" soldier value; he might not actually be in a battle.
Also, the patch is done. Link on the first post very soon.
Niahak
ModeratorHere are all the leveling scheme values:
Zhao Yun / Jiang Wei 8F
Guan Yu / Guan Xing 8A
Zhang Fei / Zhang Bao 94
Zhuge Liang / Ma Chao 85
Huang Zhong 80
Also, while looking through this – Cao Cao has a stats section. They’re probably just to "hold" his sprite, since they’re mostly 0s.
He does have a portrait, though!
1E1F20212223 which corresponds to Guan Xing’s portrait. Weird.
How’s *this* for a challenge hack, though?

I’m finishing it up and getting a patch ready soon. As a disclaimer… I can’t say this will entirely work. Saves will not be compatible with other DOAE games. It *should* work, but I can’t guarantee it will.
I’m giving Zhou Chao Huang Zhong’s leveling, Wang Gui Zhang Fei’s, Song Ren Zhao Yun’s, and Song Yong Guan Yu’s. Huo Hu will naturally get Zhu Ge Liang’s.
I have given most of the Tiger Generals what I’m *guessing* is fair for their area. They’ll be pretty darn good for the section they’re in, but their troops are static so few of them will be good after that. Jiang Wei might end up being almost viable for the last battle. In the case of generals you fight-before-you-get, like Ma Chao, Jiang Wei, and Huang Zhong, I’ve given them the troop values they have in those battles (since that’s what the "unknown" right before the soldier value is).
LYS: Agility was just guess-and-check. I gave Song Ren 255 of a value, and suddenly he always went first :)
/Edit: It was easier than I thought.
Niahak
ModeratorOh, neat stuff! I got the 5516 soldiers for Song Yong, and I just noticed now Song Yong can be a strategist with an impressive 85 int :)
Now to find out just which values give you troops.
After some experimentation, I got Song Ren 5516 soldiers with the sixth value.
So, the entire format is:
(Prev officer’s name)
STR
INT
unk
Sprite
Sprite color (you can make a dark Liu Bei, looks pretty cool :) )
unk
unk
Soldiers!
unk
AGI
portrait 1
portrait 2
portrait 3
portrait 4
portrait 5
portrait 6
portrait BG (single-color BG only)
unk
unk
Officer name
The soldier values are looked up in a table.
For example, Song Ren’s is 03 (110 soldiers), Song Yong’s is 02 (104 soldiers), and Liu Bei’s is 19 (314 soldiers).
Meanwhile, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei have mighty suspicious values… 8A and 94.
Victory!

Niahak
ModeratorOh, awesome. How’d you get Song Yong with a different number of soldiers? I haven’t found where the soldier amount is set in the ROM. Setting all the fields to FF didn’t help any…
I’m guessing the level-ups are a flag… the trick is figuring out where it is. It would probably be near the soldier amount numbers… I’m guessing there are set "types" of level ups (aren’t there a couple of the generals that have the same number of soldiers at each level)? If there’s simply a flag for it in the general’s info then that would make the job a lot easier.
