ModeratorIf you want to see where all this stuff is:

Officer stats start at 0x00032800 and end at 0x00033E20.
(Interestingly enough, Tao Qian has stats! He has 90 STR and 160 INT)
If you want to be able to see the names, you can use this table – most hex editors geared toward hacking let you load one in.
I’m gonna take a break for now, though – for real this time! Sometimes I start this kind of thing and don’t think to stop until I look at the time and it’s hours later… and suddenly I realize I’m starving.

ModeratorOkay, with a bit more experimentation:
The values after STR and INT are a bit of a mystery.
First: Unknown
Second: Character look (i.e. the sprite, the one that got messed up for Song Yong above.
Third: Character look (also sprite). Interestingly, this is coloration of the sprite (like the Demonic Huo Hu).
Fourth: Unknown
Fifth: Unknown
Sixth: Unknown
Seventh: Unknown
Eighth: AGI!
Ninth: Portrait, top 6th. As an experiment, I gave Song Ren Song Yong’s hat.

With a bit more experimentation, there are 6 areas for the portrait.

You can see a bit of Guan Xing there; Actually, this is kind of neat. There are only 255 values for one of those 6ths (i.e. you could have that pic of Guan Xing’s nose for all 6 sections).
Put in a bigger perspective… how many unique (non-generic) portraits are there? I counted at least 18 – say 20. That’s 120 values, half of the possible portrait chunks, just for unique characters. I wonder how they came up with this idea.
Anyways, the 9th through the 14th values are for the portrait.
15th is… the portrait background (for the generic people)!

16th: Unknown.
17th: Unknown.
Armed with this knowledge, we could perhaps give Guan Yu and Zhang Fei Song Yong/Song Ren’s names, sprites, and portraits, but that would be the easy way out, wouldn’t it!
*sigh* After nearly another hour of effort, I can’t figure out how the soldiers are stored! They don’t seem to be in standard binary format
(i.e. maximum is 64k some) nor in decimal (i.e. "3" "1" "4" for 314).
I’ll continue looking a bit later.

ModeratorActually, I ran into a situation in one of my games (I think because I did all 3 of Hugo’s before any of Thomas’) where I couldn’t rename Budehuc in Thomas’ chapters.
I think I was able to in Chapter 4, but I don’t really remember.
I saw Hugo as most like the standard Suiko heroes… but still not as cool. He’s the standard JRPG hero (young and arrogant) although it is kind of different how he gets manic depressive in the beginning of the 2nd chapter.

ModeratorI really enjoyed Thomas’ chapters. I just wish they hadn’t been so formulaic (run around looking and talking to people, go back to the castle and sleep. Event! run around looking and talking to people, go back to the castle and sleep. Event! …). I did win the war battle last time I played, though.
I tried the single-storyline-per-character on my last Suikomarathon (1-3, skipped 4 but played through 5). It’s pretty satisfying, but it left me feeling more than ever that Hugo is a chump, Chris is only somewhat better, and Geddoe is downright awesome.
I like all the supporting characters, but Hugo and Chris always seemed kinda lacking.
In my last playthrough, Suiko1 was 14 hours and Suiko2 was 18. I blitzed through S2’s storyline, though, to get the Clive quest. S2’s probably average 22ish for me if I sit back and enjoy the storyline.
S3, meanwhile, is around 40. That’s why I like S3 over S1. Deeper plot, cooler (if unnecessarily complex) battle system, and it’s more substantial time-wise as well.
I like S1’s plot and style, but it’s like an appetizer, S2 is soup and salad, and S3 is the main course. Now, S2 is a really good soup and salad… better quality than the main bit but there’s just not as much.

ModeratorWhere did you find that, out of curiosity? Someone else I know linked me to that exact same review a few hours ago.
I was not impressed.
I mean, seriously. Voice acting? What gives? The only *Square* game of the time to have Voice acting I can recall is Xenogears, which had maybe 5 minutes of horribly-dubbed crap.
Then there’s Grandia, which had such horrible voices I nearly turned the sound off.
Or Lunar & Lunar 2, which were only slightly better.
Voice acting has just recently become good in games.
Also, I like how they clearly reviewed an unfinished translation (Luka Bride? Joei?) and all of the screen-shots of the game are from the first 2 hours.
But yeah, on happier topics… Luca is still my favorite villain of all time. The sequence where you fight him is incredible. It’s really too bad the final boss wasn’t nearly as hard…

ModeratorIn my case, I think Taishi Ci told me about it. I started posting because of the GB DOAE stuff (which of course fell by the wayside in a swath of other projects…) and stayed here for the awesome. There are a half-dozen other forums I frequent but I don’t post as often in any.

Moderator"Tortured Thieves" and "He’s a loser. Who’s lost sight of life!" are my favorites.
That and "kill Dycedarg’s older brother".

Moderator:P I can’t get into Persona 2 because it’s ridiculously hard and there’s no point to using regular attacks… whereas in P1, guns rocked the house against lots of enemies.
I should try P2 again, but the contact system seemed unnecessarily complex. Where in P1 you had lots of commands, but you only needed to succeed against two enemies to make a persona (2 spell cards -> 1 persona), in P2 IIRC you had to get a certain number of each type of spell card… but there are a lot less commands so maybe it evens out.
Niahak
ModeratorI loved and still love Persona 1, partly because of their weird changes.
Another of the notable changes is that the game is considerably easier and less grind-heavy than the original in Japan.
Me playing the game used to involve playing for 10 hours, realizing I didn’t want to grind to make the next area possible, then stopping. Last year I tried going without grinding at all… the final boss is possible at a really low level (IIRC, 10 levels below the minimum the only FAQ recommends) if you have the right move and you luck-sack into it like me :)
Man, I love the game. I like the music, I like the characters (even if they were bastardized) and the atmosphere. I find the game frustrating as hell, but I love it anyways. Maybe I just like pain.

ModeratorSo I got this game over the weekend.
I like it so far. Punch Out (in terms of dodging) + Oni + River City Ransom + Randomness = I don’t know what… but it’s fun.
I’ve heard that the gay bodybuilders were meant as a parody of Cho Aniki, but from everything I’ve heard of Cho Aniki I never, ever want to play that game.

ModeratorFFL1 and FFL2 (both original GB) allow you to pick the class/type of all 4 starting characters.
FFL1 actually lets you drop dead characters and replace them with fresh ones from the adventurers’ guild (with the exception of the "main" character, who must be in your party, even if dead, throughout the entire game). FFL2 requires you to stick with your party, although on the plus side it has robots :D
Other than that… uh… Seiken Densetsu 3 also allows you to choose stat ups on level up. Etrian Odyssey is like FFL1 (you can swap in and out any party members). I haven’t gotten into any other games I can think of that do that kind of thing, though.
Niahak
ModeratorYeah, I see the pig as being the normally useless mascot character… that can secretly become the most overpowered character in the game with exactly the right set of items and max leveling.
Niahak
ModeratorI liked Paper Mario. Watched a roommate beat Super PM… and it looked stupidly easy, but had a great translation.
Haven’t played Paper Mario 2 yet, but I have watched some of it. Any game that has a mob hit in the background that early on has gotta be okay.
Niahak
ModeratorMan, I love the music for this game. Tried replaying the game several months ago and I couldn’t get very far. Too repetitive. But I did enjoy the music ;)
Niahak
ModeratorThe only problem is the not being able to save game state… only your character saves.
