ModeratorHmm. Maybe it's a philosophical difference between DOAEditor and the game itself (doesn't seem likely…).
The handling of the Pirate stuff is not actually as specific as I remembered, so there must be something odd about the entry itself.
How are you changing the length without bumping into the next entry (looks like normally, it's Lu Bu)?

ModeratorHey sonic,
Did you update the pointers above the officer entries to match the longer name? That would explain the behavior you're seeing.
The pirate byte length isn't hardcoded, but if the pointers weren't updated it would assume nothing has changed.

ModeratorIt's probably hard-coding the length of the pirate entry.
Will take a look and see what can be done tonight.

ModeratorThe 00-03 in the battle taunts section only refer to the 2 text banks.
00 – text bank 1, line 0-255
01 – text bank 1, line 256+
02 – text bank 2, line 0-255
03 – text bank 2, line 256+
So depending on how many lines you will want to have, you will have values 04 – (04+(n/256)).
I don't know exactle how.the lookup routine works, but I do know that much.
Also, don't forget about the line pointers you will need before the actual lines. I think I have mentioned how they work in the Rom hacking guide, but can post in more detail later (traveling and so no access to computer).

ModeratorIf you're looking for history, From my perspective the timeline looks something like:
Oct 2007 – The original Huo Hu's Adventure http://the-scholars.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18327 , DOAEditor begins development
Apr 2008 – Text Editor begins development separate from DoaEditor
Sep 2009 – Text Editor integrated into DoaEditor, Map-making released
Flipping through some of these old topics yielded some pretty fun memories, like:
Quote:And, of course, the most interesting so far:

Hmm, Xuzhou townsperson wants to join up. What could possibly go wrong?

…Oh.

…Touche.

ModeratorWhen I happen to check LYS at exactly the right time, have my netbook with the right tools installed, and have a pretty good idea of where to look, yeah. I can whip up a release of DoaEditor in about 20 minutes.

ModeratorI couldn't reproduce the second issue, so I'll hold off on fixing it.
First one should be fixed now, but again I've only barely tested:

ModeratorQuote:Somehow I'm missing the extended chapters portion with the newest update. While I do have a regiontable that specifies they should present, they are not appearing in the map editor.Yeah, it loads the acceptable chapter numbers for the map editor from the ROM because I was a little bit lazy. It's been that way since I first added map editing. I can make an update, but it will definitely not be well-tested. Good thing I set up that SVN server, since I'm not at home :)
Quote:There is also a bug with the text editor where if you edit a line and don't click on another line before exporting that the line often reverts to the previous line before you edited it. It's really weird.Yeah, that's actually due to another issue. I didn't like the idea of opening and exporting a ROM changing any text, and there's no easy way to tell if a line has been manually changed by the user. It can also be fixed, I think, but just want to make sure that's an acceptable side-effect.

It's not actually reading the table in order – unfortunately that much is not really possible the way I'm using .NET. However, it is sorting it so that it ends up in the same order. So it's the same difference.

ModeratorYeah, I can look into this sometime this coming week.

ModeratorSome really nice work on the Han Dang, Zu Mao & Zhang Liao portraits :) I'm guessing Han Dang at least is based on his RTK portraits with that awesome facial hair.

ModeratorIs he actually out on the map? I always assumed that not being able to put people on the map is why "Sun Ce" appears in front of Luoyang on that weird sub-map for it.
Niahak
ModeratorDefinitely Chinese, not Japanese. I can read a few characters here and there but I just don't have the kanji expertise to figure all of these out (and meanings would be jumbled somewhat too).

ModeratorI also was mostly inspired to read 3K by Destiny of an Emperor, though I didn't actually read it until I was 18 or so.
I agree with Water Margin and Journey to the West not being nearly as enjoyable.
In the case of Water Margin, the translation was in a pretty different style which might've contributed. I'd call it second best out of the three, though; at its high points it is nearly as great as Three Kingdoms (especially the middle segments where the imperial army invades the marsh and the heroes' journeys in the beginning). I suspect after a couple re-reads that the final 20 or so chapters were authored by Luo Guanzhong since they have a very similar tragic overtone as the same chapters in Three Kingdoms, but nobody knows for sure. Water Margin did inspire the Suikoden series of games which is of course fantastic.
I get the impression Journey to the West was a very repetitive story to begin with. Although the iconic Monkey is a great character, the situations he and Sanzo get into are simply too varied and bizarre to really make a coherent story.
Haven't read Dream of the Red Chamber, but it sounds very different from the other novels.
