ModeratorIf there's been one benefit to being stuck in bed / not sitting at a computer… it's that I got to play the Yuan Shao mod… and I'm currently working on beating Ultima Exodus (nes). It's the last game that I've owned that I've not beaten. Been playing it legit, too. No online guides / maps / faqs / etc. So lots of typing out what people say in notepad and screenshots of maps from within the game heh. Gonna use a game tile map editor thing in order to map out the dungeons….
And yeah, no LUA. Formulas will be text file based though…. so that helps a bit.

Moderatornon serious idea:
hijack the food function in overworld / walking and append / replace with a slow TP regen as you walk kind of thing :bon:

Moderatorsp: indeed (not using TP when venturing to the next gate)
This is particularly true for the last three chapters of the game (liu zhang and beyond).
As a kid and not really knowing too much better… I even did the trek to Ru Nan via a party full of smoke pots … just so I could avoid random encounters. Might have done similar for the first bit of Liu Zhang area.
Granted, as an adult I don't do such things… but am still generally very wary of using TP when trekking to the next gate. Speaking of which, some of those surprise encounters in Lu Bu were zomg hehe. The reduced TP usage in lu bu mod made it less of an issue though.
In the Yuan Shao mod, I was cautious with TP usage, but did allow myself *some* usage between gates. The higher available TP probably helped with this.
To kind of hit on something mentioned earlier… the early game TP restoration… I dunno if this is such a big deal. In my play throughs the early game generally does just fine for me concerning TP usage. Although… being able to Wu Jian a bit more in RE's or heal a bit more in the RE's would be helpful (ie: coming across li ru or some other Yan Re using guy and not having to ultra fear it cause of not wanting to use TP).
I don't think total TP available should really factor in too much, personally. At > 100TP, there are plenty of tactics that cost only 5-10, and in early game, 5-10 is still common if i recall correctly… so… I don't see why total TP would matter.
I wonder what the original game design intention of limited TP was. To keep the game focused on physical pounding (given party layout in original, this could make sense)… or to keep tactics as a more 'special use' kind of thing…. which then begins to break down towards end game when enemy strategists are everywhere.
edit: i discovered the forum recognizes bracket hr bracket! … ok… maybe it doesn't
ok… so maybe it's just less than hr / greater than.

ModeratorI voted for 'all battles' just cause I'm a wussy.
Surely you could make the patch for "only ID'd battles" and then offer a nop'd or hacked quickie to make it 'all battles' for modders that want it that way ?
unfy
ModeratorI do like the last idea. Dunno if 200 is the correct number, but I do like it most definitely.
I wonder if any of the original dev's or play testers pay attention to all the hacking done on the game….
I also wonder how many jump points / offsets you have memorized in the game :P

ModeratorAs a 'tactical point' thing, having a party wide defend makes sense. That way the tactician isn't concerned with other stuff and can plan.
that seems harder to do from coding perspective tho :).
Granted, if each 'defend' also gained the player 2-5TP as well as granting that general his standard defense boost…
raises questions about (ab-)using random encounters with non-generals as a way to restore TP ?

ModeratorBTW — careful with making the AI smarter.
Relying on stupid AI is helpful in many mods, and down right required in the stupidly hard ones :).
Since the player is nearly always at a disadvantage in the game, a smarter AI would call for modders to make the player party much more even with the enemy (or even ahead possibly… damn unlimited AI TP).

ModeratorXu Yuan: damnit, quit being on topic :3
I did end up using lots of the more 'middling' generals in the Yuan Shao mod… and enjoyed weighing stats stuff (similarly did in lu bu pre 2.0 mod). I had Shen Pei in my party up into Jing Zhou, maybe even further up until Wu, not sure. Guo Tu I *might* have skipped or only used for a bit within Gongsun Zan.
And Ju Shou with good Int, acceptable Str, and godly Agi made for a real good party lead IMHO. The lower soldier count was generally not too much of a problem. He had enough to survive nearly all fights, but wasn't some massive tank.
Slightly disappointing that taishi ci / zhou yu, and many other late game enemy generals weren't too useful… but… being a Yuan Shao mod that's completely understandable :).
Speaking of which, some thanks for making getting the first Bow in Jing Zhou not nearly impossible like many other mods do. I like having the option of doing so… particularly since enemy soldier counts jump tremendously at that point in the game. And that fork in the road made the original so much more neat IMHO. As a kid on my very first play through, I did Jing Zhou first… which made Yuan Shao a cake walk sadly… but oh well.

ModeratorA couple of the mods (lu bu pre 2.0 comes to mind)… I've bought food before starting the dong zhou quest. As a kid with some casual grinding in the original, I've also bought food at times.
I'll agree that you usually don't need to buy food, and agreeing with SP — you only buy food late game it seems.
In my yuan shao play through, I actually ran out of food on the way to the castle prior of lou yang end game (after ru-nan, prior lou yang…. wasn't too catastrophic though… had some left over elixer d's and miracle… and this was my first game in ages when i actually bothered carrying elixers beyond the first 5 castles heh).
I'd say food needs to either become more prominent or removed. More prominent makes the game much more stressful. As a kid I remember needing to buy more food… maybe because of more gullwing / gui huan usage ? The game generally doesn't rely on economics for difficulty and stuff.. so… while money is generally easy to come by, making things more expensive or forcing more food buying kinda disturbs that ?
BTW – i hate you modders for making power pills cost 500 instead of 50. bastards :finger:
Concerning TP regen item… while I think an item would be best… but, most people tend to avoid using tactics when going from town to town … would a TP reset at the end / start of every battle be that much of a game changer ? I mean… truly ? Granted, it'd mean free healing… and make the long marches less stressful… ok, maybe not auto reset.
How about this…. how many tactic slots are currently unused ? How about a 'pray' or 'meditate' style tactic that costs, say, 0 or 1, and recovers some TP ? Or is that too broken ?
I dunno, just brain storming. I'm not the 6502 guy :P

ModeratorAye :(.
For me it was a movement that shouldn't have caused any problems… but alas it seemed to be the last straw. Phys therapist figures it's from years of sitting in office chairs and such.
Last phys therapist session he pushed / contorted me in a bunch of different ways and I was mostly fine – so i'm on the road to recovery yay.
As far as the ROTK2 project…. when I do get back to it, I'm gonna skip funky UI ideas and just get a basic UI implemented so that things can continue moving forward. A lot of data entry has been done, just getting to the point of needing UI so that things can be more easily tested and implemented (formulas for things, etc).
I doubt i can do it, but if I can get the meat of the logic of the game implemented via LUA, that'd be awesome for everyone so it's easy to fiddle and submit updates etc.

ModeratorOh, some of the historical recreation bits were good too.
Only real complaint is how mostly useless Zhang He was. Several other mods have similar problems with the zhao yun replacement (the 1/2 soldier count to everyone else makes'em useless in mods that are usually more difficult). I think a mod had one that was more of a strategist than physical attacker… which was viable (i think ?).
Dunno if I used chunyiquong much.
Also learned something new in this mod -> negate also cancels doubt effects.
Wan Fu not healing 100% is a god send. Damn AI with unlimited TP's.
I really liked the life spells.
One tiny nitpick regarding everyone having negate – it did make 'rally' a tad less useful for the cost. I realize it's a powerful spell and should have a decent cost… but… it seemed to be worthless in Wu and Wei.
Agility based attacks are definitely interesting, and made general choices a bit more interesting… not so much in an offensive sense, but in a defensive one. Given that the game has always hit hard (original and mods) once ya get into the gongsun zan area… getting hit more than once can prove unfortunate.
I think I got hit by an sha a bit earlier than expected in the game and was like 'wait… what ?'. Cute surprise, but didn't really affect my party choice or game play any. Oh, and I didn't cast an sha once during my game play.
I did make use of the early-game-area -> late-game-area cave enemy population bug for after ru nan… including bringing along a single smoke pot for the trek between caves heh.
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but a TP restoring item would be kick anus. Can't really think of an item to swap out with it though. From my own game plays, Elixer B would be the thing I tend to be least likely to use (and possibly Elixer C). All DoaE players would be up in arms, but swapping it out with the power pill …. … ok… can't get rid of power pills hehehe.

ModeratorCongrats on the run, SP!
As mentioned in another thread, i managed to fux my back up. Bulged disc. I've not sat at this computer chair in forever…. :/. and i won't be sitting in it again for a bit heh. sitting / standing for more than 3-5 hours a day starts to really hurt…. and… naturally, most of that sitting / standing time is spent at work heh.
I did install my dev tools on my netbook, but typing and mousing on a netbook while laying down is a royal PITA :(.
Sigh.

ModeratorHurt my back back the beginning of July…. was bedridden for a good while. sitting / standing for more than a few hours a day still hurts.
Played through this mod on netbook while in bed.
I approve.
Balance seemed to be right for not requiring a lot of resets, and didn't need to save state abuse at all.
8 tactics were nice, although some battles were grrrr with everyone having negate heh.
A few of the standard bugs relating to people gaining levels that you didn't actually have etc. prolly already mentioned as well, but at lvl 51, yuan shang's health bar disappeared. i nearly put yaun tan in just to see what his 73k soldiers looked like :).
Cao Hong slapping is LOL.
Stepping out of Nan Yang and meeting gungsun zan for the 'go home fight', i had only person alive afterward. kinda weird walking around in this game without anyone following you heh.
Being able to come back to the sun quan and liu bei fights was a tad handy. Although… getting liu bei as jiang wei replacement and then having liu bei vs liu bei was… weird.
The 'pang tong' sun ce fight after jing zhou was one of the hardest if i recall correctly. although some of the earlier sun jian fights were hard as well.
For my party, I generally stuck with people who were either good int or balanced int/str with decent/good agility. Zhou rhemng lasted me up until either Chang Sha or maybe into the liu yan area.
Final party was Jia Xue advisor not in combat. Ju Show party lead, liu bei with red hare, yuan shang, yan liang, zhang he (useless guy until end of game sigh). Feng Ji was there as possible swap out for the last fight (just so party lead had higher int than cao cao)… but… wasn't necessary it seemed.
appreciation for not making the first phase of the final battle not be extremely TP heavy… it made the last half more doable and less of a coin flip.
i did have one fight… near the end iirc… where… ran out of TP, had the enemy strategists dead, but i actually lost the fight due to being out phys damaged by the enemy hehehe.

ModeratorI'm still alive.
Been a bit busy with health related things. In late March, started walking 5km a day. For the last 3 or 4 weeks, have been going to the gym and weight lifting. Dropped my average and resting heart rate by about 10-15bpm, dropped my blood pressure by 20pts on both sides, and have been losing about 1.5lbs a week (currently: 191.6lbs).
Code base is still sitting on my PC, I still think about it several times a week… just haven't actually DONE anything to it yet. Hopefully soon.
