I'm glad to hear of a bug that can be readily reproduced and fixed, don't get me wrong :)
I'm just frustrated at the design of DoaE's pointers.
July 19, 2010 at 4:40 am #26966MiDKnighTModeratorYa, and the fact that they spread these zones/regions all over the map with no logical order…
I think they did it just to really annoy rom hackers 20 years after the game was made.
June 12, 2011 at 6:30 am #26967Jiang WeiParticipanthmm can you make it where you can change certain things like say what item is found where/weapon&armor names&stats/what you get from certain characters/how the tigers lvl?
June 12, 2011 at 8:44 pm #26968NiahakModeratorNot planned yet, assuming I ever do get back to DoaEd :(
James documented a bunch of that stuff, though.
June 13, 2011 at 1:44 am #26969DragonAtmaModeratorThey did find out how to adjust soldier gains for tigers; each tiger has five variables (for levels 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, ,31-40, and 41-50), and they gain (soldiers*X/256) soldiers per level (where X is, of course, the gain rate). So if Zhao Yun has a max of 1000 soldiers and the current gain rate is 32, he'll have 1125 at the next level. As for level 51 (if you use that little trick) it uses the next value — which is usually the next tiger's first gain rate. Here are the gain rates:
Huang Zhong: 36, 36, 31, 31, 26, (34)
Ma Chao: 34, 34, 34, 34, 26, (36)
Guan Yu: 36, 36, 36, 31, 26 (31)
Zhao Yun: 31, 34, 38, 38, 26 (38)
Zhang Fei: 38, 38, 36, 31, 26 (9)
I don't recall the exact location of where those values are, but you should be able to search for them.
June 13, 2011 at 3:23 am #26970NiahakModeratorHuh, I never heard about this. That's fascinating.
So that's how they managed to include effective "slopes", the gain rate is effectively (X/2.56)% per level.
In case anyone is interested, they're at 3B51B. It doesn't look like there's room for expansion there, but it would be easy to include them in the editor, should I pick it back up :)
This leaves room for some fun tweaking. Powerful generals that taper off growth-wise, or weak generals that remain usable late-game due to very high soldier counts.
June 13, 2011 at 7:34 pm #26971Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea that's cool DA.

I do remember during some of his roms, notably the Cao Cao one, there were some wild slopes with gaining soldiers among some characters.

and is there a DoaE2 editor?
June 18, 2011 at 4:43 pm #26973Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterQuote:and does any one know how to change what you receive from the guy who gives you supplies?Yea I think we talked about this on a DoaE page on the main lordyuanshu site. Pretty sure just changing the text from 200 gold + 1000 food to something else wouldn't change the actual values of the gold / food. Need to figure out the 'item' it is referencing and then maybe change it with Hex? Just my amateur analysis though, can't say for sure.
Quote:and is there a DoaE2 editor?Nope. Not a lot of buzz to get one and I doubt you'll find anyone around here interested in doing one. However, there are DoaE II hacks like DoaE II Wu, DoaE II Wei, etc. They're Japanese though so who knows if they created an editor to simplify the editing process or just hex assaulted it. Either way I doubt you'll find a tool to do the same.

June 18, 2011 at 9:17 pm #26975Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterJames' site has some stuff for reference as to where things are, that might help. Also check Destiny of an Emperor Gamefaqs message board for some of MiDKnight's work too, maybe there is something about item values in hex there.

September 23, 2011 at 2:29 pm #26977sonic.penguinModeratorBeen using DOAEditor and was wondering:
1. The portraits that come in 6 parts that are included with DOAEditor, are those the ones that are used for the reference of what is on your harddrive in the portraits folder or do those letters refer to the HEX values of the pictures embedded in the actual game. Example: 2A 2B 2C 2E 2F (lu bu). -> does this pull from your portrait folder or what is embedded in the game.
I tried using Feidian to insert some pics I photoshopped, but am a total klutz when it comes to DOS programs. I've just been working on not botching the dialogue changes and erroring the .nes files XD.
Also the DOAEditor Text editor included in .94 doesn't work. I had to download it separately so i wouldn't get 'Unknown Key' errors
September 23, 2011 at 9:28 pm #26978NiahakModerator1. These are what's on the hard drive. I never bothered figuring out how to translate raw bytes into an image. Not sure how hard it would be. You could always use the following script to extract what you put into the ROM:
http://www.niahak.org/images/DOAE/executefeidianloop.txt
Rename it to .bat, put it in your FEIDIAN directory, and run it. You'll get a bunch of files you can copy into your portraits folder, and DoaEditor will use them.
2. What do you mean the one included in .94? There's a DoaEd release, and a separate Text Editor release. I never did get around to integrating them into one project.
September 24, 2011 at 2:45 am #26979NiahakModeratorAlthough you did remind me that I should really get around to (2)… and the length checky stuff in the text editor.
I'm also compiling in x86 mode, and testing with Win7 myself, so there should be no impact to using W7/64 bits… unless there are permissions issues involved.
