ParticipantChapter 5 – From Piggy to Paladin
You wake up near Mysidia alone. Don’t go in yet, because we’re gonna build some levels for the final challenge as a dark knight. I personally build it up to level 23 to get Cecil over 500 HP, though you can go higher if you so desire.
When you’re done levelling up, go into Mysidia. DO NOT TALK TO THE BLACK MAGES YET. One of them turns you into a frog. In the inn/cafe, one of them will poison you. Go right into the middle building and talk to the elder. The elder will listen to what you have to say. After Cecil says what he has to say, the elder will suggest that you go to Mt. Ordeals to begin the process of saving Rosa. He wants you to be bathed in the purifying light at the summit and receive the power of a holy knight (Paladin). The Elder sends for two magicians to accompany you, Palom and Porom. As you can tell, Porom is the nicer of the two. Palom uses black magic, and Porom uses white magic. They have a nice twin attack that puts the hurt on most enemies. I suggest going to the weapons/armor shops and buying equipment for Palom/Porom, and the paladin equipment. They will be your only means of protection when you go down the mountain. If you have enough money left over, buy Palom a FireRod, and Porom a Healing Staff. Don’t know how much useful their physical attacks will be, but it’s always good to be equipped properly. Now go to Mt. Ordeals, defeating monsters along the way and levelling the wizards up.
When you get to Mt. Ordeals, a wall of fire blocks the way. Palom will remove it with his ice spell. After that, there’s a cutscene in a tower w/Kain and Golbeze. Rosa is tied up. Golbeze sends for an enemy called Scarmiglione. This is the first of the four elemental bosses. Golbeze will send him to Mt. Ordeals to kill you. After a bit more dialogue, the scene will come back to you, where you can continue on. IMO, you should not be fighting the monsters on this mountain yet. Keep running from them as you get the treasures on this part of the mountain. On the next level, the 3rd station, go a bit of a distance and you’ll run into Tella. He’s searching for the spell Meteo. He says that he will find the spell to avenge his daughter, even if it means his life. Tella eventually joins. If you built up levels, Tella will have gained a lot of HP. Even with Tella in the party, you’re not quite ready to fight the monsters of this mountain, so keep running. Get to the summit. You will start hearing a hissing sound. Porom thinks it’s Palom, but it isn’t. There’s a save point here, go there, use a tent, and save the game. When you get to the bridge, Scarmiglione will make his presence. He attacks after a brief dialogue. Eliminate the 4 zombie things he has with him with Twin and some Cure2 magic. It’ll cure Scarmiglion, but you haven’t done much damage to him yet, so that’s fine. When the 4 zombies are eliminated, go after Scarmiglion full blast. Twin magic, Cecil’s main attack, and let Tella cure with Cure2. This ain’t a true bossfight yet, so that’s why I haven’t put his picture here. When you defeat him, WAIT TO CROSS THE BRIDGE. Go back to the save point, change rows, use a tent, and save your game. You’ll thank me later.
Scarmiglion attacks from behind!

Scarmiglion – First of the Four Elementals!
HP – 3,523
My Levels: Tella 24, Cecil 23, Porom 13, Palom 12
Difficulty: 6
Weakness: Fire, Holy, Projectiles
Steal: None
His main attacks could cause poison! Keep the twins alive AT ALL COSTS. Attack with Cecil, cure with Tella, and use the Twin Magic attacks. Eventually, after a tough battle, Scarmiglion will go down to defeat! You earn 900 EXP for the victory. Now, before you continue, UNEQUIP Cecil! You’ll want to sell his equipment. Now go into the little cave thing. After some dialogue, a sword will fall out of the sky, and Cecil will catch it and become a Paladin, but first, you must fight your past. Everyone offers their help, but Cecil refuses, saying that this is HIS fight, alone.

Dark Knight
HP: Too many
Levels: Cecil 1
Difficulty: 3
Weakness: N/A
Steal: N/A
Do nothing. DO NOT ATTACK! Use potions if your life gets too low, eventually you’ll get a dialogue, which means you have won. After this, Cecil officially becomes a Paladin!
Tella will remember all the spells that he forgot, and thanks to the light, he will learn Meteo!
Now equip Cecil with all the Paladin stuff that we bought earlier. I told you that you’d thank me later :P
It may sound heartless, but you may want to kill off Palom and Porom right now, so that you can get Cecil to a reasonable level. I think level 15-20 is sufficient. Keep Tella alive so that he can cure you. It’ll be quite awhile before he ever gains another level :P
Now that you’re off the mountain, go south until you reach one of those circular forests. Like I said in chapter 1, they are Chocobo Forests! Catch a Chocobo, and take the easy way back to Mysidia. All the villagers have changed their tune. Go rest at an inn to revive Palom and Porom. Now go back to where you met the elder. A long dialogue begins. Put a pot of coffee on the stove, you might need it :P
After this dialogue, the elder opens up the devil’s road to Baron. Take the Devil’s Road to Baron. When you get to Baron, the villagers are talking about how cruel the king has become. Go to the inn, and head up…there’s Yang, and he’s with 2 soldiers. Yang has been brainwashed! His two soldier friends attack. After you defeat the Baron Guards, Yang attacks! After you do enough damage on him, he passes out, then explains that Baron controlled him. After a night of rest, you’ll be ready to go. If you built Cecil up like I told you to, Yang will have well over 1,000 HP! Way more than you probably need.

ParticipantChapter 4 – Time to Climb Mt. Hobs, Fabul In the Distance
Now that Rydia has gotten over her fear of fire, you can climb Mt. Hobs. For an early save point, go up and west until you see an opening. Keep going that way until you see a odd marking on the floor. That’s your save point. Save the game, use a tent if necessary. Now back the way you came, go east. You’ll reach another opening, go through it and you’ll be at the summit. Grab the treasure, which is 10 Holy Arrows. Equip them on Rosa. Now head up until you see a bald guy and monsters. That is Yang, monk of Fabul. He’ll destroy the Domovoys with ease, maybe only lose around 100 of his 300 HP. The last one, he’s gonna need your help with, so you do help.
Mombomb
HP: 11,000
My Levels: Rosa 10, Cecil 17, Rydia 11, Gilbert 9
Difficulty: 7
Weakness: None

This is a tough battle, especially if you’re underlevelled, which I appear to be. No matter, we persevere. Have Rydia use Chocobo, Cecil attack, Rosa uses Aim, and Yang uses Build Up/attack. Heal when necessary. Go ahead and let Gilbert die, unless you want him to hide, that’s fine too. I found a way to win it by attacking early, heal when necessary, parry when the Mombomb turns big, thus minimizing the damage done by its explosion. Cecil has to use Dark Wave when it splits into 6. Yang can also use Kick on the multiple bombs to eliminate them faster. Let Gilbert hide, since he does nothing. Rydia joins in the healing process with Cure and potions. Lather, rinse, repeat, until all the bombs are gone.
After your victory, Yang tells you who he is, which you already knew if you were paying attention to me! His men were training and were attacked. His men were killed, Yang was the only one who survived. Rosa tells Yang that Golbeze is going after the Crystals. Yang says that they’ll be coming after Fabul’s Wind Crystal. After a long dialogue, Yang finally joins. Now’s a good time to use potions to heal the party, you have a bit of a trek ahead of you. I suggest using this time to level up big time. When you’re off the mountain, use a tent and SAVE. You have a bit of a ways to go to get to Fabul. Build up a level or two, but don’t be hesitant to run! When you get to Fabul, buy Cecil’s demon equipment, and buy Yang another claw. If you have any unneeded equipment, go ahead and sell it. Personally, I go rest after buying Cecil’s equipment, then go back out and build more levels, because you’re going to need them soon. When you’re done building levels, change the party’s formation, and unequip Rosa’s stuff. When you’re ready, go back to Fabul and talk to the King. Get ready for several fights.
Captain & Marine (2)
HP: 320, 65
Difficulty: 4
My Levels: Cecil 17, Yang 12, Gilbert 11
Steal: None
Weakness: None
Remember the fight you had protecting Rydia? Well, it’s similar to this one, only the Captain and Marines are stronger. Eliminate one of the Marines, then go after the General for more EXP. After the General is eliminated, mop up the last Marine for 466 EXP. Gilbert should gain another level. The Red Wings will bomb, and you’ll escape into Fabul Castle. Now you’re in another battle against a Sahagin, Lacy, and a Domovoy. Mop these up, they’re normal monsters. After that, you retreat another room further, and you face another Captain and Marines. Same strategy for this one, eliminate the captain to get the EXP. Yang should gain a level this time. In the throne room, one of the guards will unlock the door, it’s not a guard, it’s a Gargoyle! Eliminate it, shouldn’t be hard. Another fight with Lacy, Sahagin, and Domovoy will ensue. At this point, Yang will want to retreat to the crystal. Gilbert will trip and fall. You enter one more battle. Again, Captain and Marines. If Gilbert is weak, he will run and hide. This is a blessing in disguise, IMO. Heal immediately, then use Dark Wave to eliminate a Marine. Same tactic = good EXP. In the Crystal Room, someone comes out. It’s Kain! Cecil is happy to see Kain alive. Unfortunately, Kain has gone evil! He attacks!
Kain
HP: A lot
Difficulty: 0
My Levels: Cecil 18
Weaknesses: None
Steal: None
You can’t win this battle. Just let Kain kill you. If you want, get a few hits on Kain. Kain will try to finish Cecil off, but Yang stops him. Rosa and Rydia then run in. After a mini-dialogue, Golbeze makes his presence. Yang and Gilbert try to stop Golbeze, but a simple lightning bolt sends them flying. Kain will get Golbeze the crystal. Golbeze will take Rosa. Rydia will use cure and you’ll all be fine. Rosa has been kidnapped. Rydia says that Rosa will be alright, and that they could get back the crystal. Back in the castle, grab an item from the nearby pot, then go east and open that door to grab 3 treasures, including the Demon Shield for Cecil. The King was injured in the attack and has gone to his room, but don’t think about that yet. You can’t go back outside yet, so go rest at the inn. Before you forget, buy some tents for the upcoming area. Trust me, you’ll need them. Yang and Gilbert wonder if there’s any way to sneak into Baron. Cecil says their navy is weak, so going to Baron by sea is a possibility. They’ll ask the king about a ship tomorrow morning.
The next morning, the King gives Cecil a ship, and gives Cecil the Deathbringer Sword. Equip that on him now, it causes random instant death to enemies!
BEFORE YOU GET ON THE SHIP, unequip everyone’s weapons/armor except for Cecil. You’ll see why. Now get on the ship. If you get into an enounter before you get there, just run. It won’t matter very soon. The ship gets going, but eventually, rumbling. It is the master of the ocean…it’s Leviathan! Rydia gets thrown into the ocean. Yang goes after her. Gilbert gets hurt and falls to the ground. Cecil protects Gilbert as the ship goes crashing. Cecil wakes up alone on a beach.

ParticipantChapter 3 – The Antlion
You will now tackle the Antlion cave. Make sure you have a few tents and potions, you just might need them. Anyway, grab all the treasure in this first floor, a few healing items is all it is. Once you’ve grabbed it all, go to the right and down a few steps to the Basement 2nd floor. Grab the chest in there, then go into the room to your left. I believe you’ll get the Dreamer harp, an improvement for Gilbert (not much of one). Follow the path then go north and east into the opening. Continue along the path until you get to a save point. Grab the treasures in here, then step on the save point. If you must, use a tent, but SAVE now.
Get out of there, then make your way south to the center. You’ll be in the Antlion’s Nest. Use potions to heal before this battle, you’ll need to. Gilbert will try to get the Light of the Desert. Rydia will be scared, but Gilbert reassures her that the Antlion won’t hurt a human.
WRONG! The Antlion tries to squash Gilbert, but he jumps out of the way just in time. This will start a fight.
Antlion
HP: 1,100
My Levels: Cecil 16, Rydia 10, Gilbert 7
Difficulty: 4 (3 if you’re leveled higher than I am :p)
Weakness: Nothing
Steal: Nothing
This really isn’t a difficult battle, it’s more annoying than hard. Everytime you attack normally, Antlion will counter with a Needle attack that will take off 30-40 HP (a lot for Rydia and Gilbert). Have Cecil attack all the way, Rydia use her Chocobo summon, and let Gilbert use potions or his Medicine command (it doesn’t add a lot of HP back, but every little bit helps!). Keep doing this, and Antlion will go down without too much of a fight. You get 800 gil and 500 EXP from this battle, and that should be enough to get Cecil another level.
Gilbert will be in disbelief about how the Antlion became hostile. Cecil explains how the number of monsters has increased as of late. Rydia suggests that we get to Rosa quickly, Cecil agrees. This is where you wish you had an EmergencyExit, but if you don’t, fight your way out. When you’re out, get back on the hovercraft and go to Kaipo. Save here, you’ll find out why soon enough. Use the DesertLight on Rosa. She’ll start to feel better. Apparantly, Rosa came to Kaipo because she thought Cecil died in the earthquake at Mist. She alsy confirms that Golbeze is in control of the Red Wings now. Rosa asks if Rydia can cast fire, and we all know Rydia can’t. Rosa then insists on joining you for the trip to Mt. Hobs. Cecil originally rejects the idea, but Gilbert convinces him.
That night, Gilbert goes outside to play his harp, and asks why Anna had to leave him. A monster pops out of nowhere!
Sahagin
HP: A lot
My Levels: Gilbert 8
Difficulty: 1
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
This particular Sahagin has about a billion HP. Fortunately, after Gilbert hits on his first attack, the ghost of Anna appears, telling Gilbert that he isn’t as weak as he thinks he is. Keep attacking. Eventually the Sahagin will be defeated, and Gilbert will gain 800 EXP, and most likely another level. Anna leaves Gilbert again, but urges him to not allow Golbeze to get all the crystals.
You’re back in the house again with Cecil, and now Rosa is in your party. Now you can go to Mt. Hobs. I would consider changing up your formation and rows so that Cecil is the only one in the front, with Rydia, Rosa, and Gilbert in the back. Enter Mt. Hobs. Rosa asks Rydia to try and cast fire. Rydia won’t, because she hates fire. Cecil explains that because of the Bomb Ring’s inferno, Mist was destroyed, and that she’s afraid of it. Rosa tells her that she’s the only one who can melt the ice and if she doesn’t, more people will be in danger. Rydia ends up casting fire, and now you can go on.

ParticipantChapter 2 – Alone in the Desert
Don’t go into Kaipo yet. You should go into the cave north of Kaipo. Build some levels until you’re say…level 12 or 13. I personally level up to 15. Now you go to Kaipo. You run to the inn, and get the girl to bed. She refuses to talk. Moments later, guards from Baron come in. Cecil refuses to give them the girl, and a battle ensues.
General
Soldier (3)
HP: 221 (General), 27 (Soldiers)
My Levels: Cecil 15
Difficulty: 1.5
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Take out the General first. Then mop up the soldiers to get max EXP from this battle.
After you win, the girl finally talks. Her name is Rydia, and she’ll join. Now you can go around Kaipo into the shops. One townsperson suggests you put Rydia in the back row. Do that, because if she dies, she ain’t getting EXP. Skip the armory, as Rydia’s armor is the best as it can get right now. Do go to the Weapon Shop and get Rydia a staff (attack goes up 1), a bow, and if you can afford it, 90 iron arrows. Equip the bow in her LEFT hand, and the arrows in her right hand, it bumps her attack power to 10. Now go into the house on the upper right. You’ll find a familiar face there. It’s Rosa. She’s got desert fever, and to cure it, you need the "Light of the Desert", a gem found in the Antlion’s lair. We won’t be there for awhile though, so you should reluctantly leave Rosa’s side for now.
Go outside of Kaipo and level up. Get Rydia up to around level 7 or 8. I personally would get her up to 10 just to be safe. Now we’ll be going back to the Underground Channel. Go along the path west until you get to a bridge with an old man on it. That old man is the great sage Tella. He joins. He is rather strong magic user at level 20. He gets even stronger, but that comes later in the game. He knows Cure 2, which is a huge plus at this point. Keep defeating the monsters and grabbing the treasure you see until you get to a safe point. This is one of the many save points you can find in caverns. You’ll rest in Tella’s tent, and Cecil and Tella will talk. Rydia has long since fallen asleep. Cecil tells Tella that she is a caller from Mist. Tella also tells you about his daugher, Anna. Now’s a good time to save your game, so do it…or you might regret it later!
Continue through the 2nd Basement floor. You’ll find an Ice Rod that you should give to Tella now. Go through the passage into Basement Floor 3. Go west into the doors. You’ll be in another passageway. Go west until your character disappears. Then go north and east until your character comes back into view. Grab the treasure (a hidden passage for a lousy potion, what a ripoff!), and go into the passageway. Keep running from the new monsters (Gigatoad and Organitoad). Grab the treasures on both sides, the treasures include a new sword for Cecil. Equip that on him IMMEDIATELY. His attack power goes up by 10. Leave the cave, and just before entering the next one, use a tent and save. You’ll thank me later.
Now enter that cave, once you fall down the waterfall, you can’t turn back. Hold your breath and jump in. You’ll land in the water at the bottom. Get out of the water, and grab the 2 treasures. These are armor upgrades for Cecil. In the next part of the cave, you’ll get Hermes Shoes (item to make you faster in battle), and the Hades armor, another upgrade for Cecil. Go to the tentacles, and you’ll begin a fight with Octomammoth.
Octomammoth
HP: 2,350
My Levels: Cecil 16, Rydia 9, Tella 20
Difficulty: 2 (3 if you’re not careful)
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Darkness, Lightning
Octomammoth is weak against lightning, so have Rydia and Tella use Bolt while Cecil attacks with his dark sword (he’ll do very good damage). As you hurt him, he’ll lose his tentacles. After that, he won’t attack as much, and you’ll have smooth sailing. After defeating Octomammoth, go north and leave via the waterfall. Before you go into Damcyan, you should unequip Tella’s stuff. You’ll see why. After the Red Wings bomb the castle, go in. When you go into Damcyan, go down one space, then head northeast until you reach a door. Go in, talk to the downed soldier. He’ll die, and tell you to take the treasures. Do so. Then go into the basement and take those treasures too. When you go to the 3rd floor, you find a girl laying on the ground, dying. It’s Tella’s daughter, Anna! Tella thinks the Bard killed her. A battle ensues, just sit back. You can’t do anything. Then again, neither can Tella, as his fists won’t put a dent in the bard. Then you hear the greatest line in the game.
SHUT UP! YOU SPOONY BARD! :D
Greatness. Anyway, the Bard keeps trying to explain, and Tella just keeps hitting him. Then, Anna pleads with them to stop. Anna says that the bard is Gilbert, prince of Damcyan. Gilbert then explains that Golbeze is controlling the Red Wings. The Red Wings pillaged the castle to steal the crystal, and Anna shielded Gilbert from the arrows (what a coward). Anna professes her love for Gilbert, then dies. Tella asks about Golbeze, and Gilbert says that he took over the Red Wings. Gilbert begins to cry. Tella leaves to go avenge Anna’s death. Cecil tries to talk him out of it, but to no avail. Tella shoves Cecil out of the way and leaves the party…hmm, such strength for an old man to push a knight aside. Gilbert continues to cry, and Rydia calls him a crybaby. She yells at Gilbert, saying that he should act like a grown-up, and that he isn’t the only one to have lost a loved one. Gilbert then says he’s a weakling and will stay with Anna forever. Cecil slaps him, and tells him that he ain’t the only sad one around here, and asks if staying around here and crying like a baby would make Anna happy. Cecil then asks for Gilbert’s help in getting the Light of the Desert for Rosa. Gilbert agrees, and not only does Gilbert join, but you get the Hovercraft, which can cross shallow water. You can go back to Kaipo to heal, which I recommend highly. It might also be a good idea to level Gilbert up around Kaipo, even though in my view, he’s a useless character.
To be continued…

ParticipantChapter 1 – From Baron to Mist
The game begins on the ships of Baron. Cecil’s crew talk about how they are under orders to steal the crystal from Mysidia. They take the crystal without much of a fight, and then Cecil defends the King’s orders. Monsters appear, and Cecil destroys them all *3 floating eyes, he uses a flare-like item, then a Roc appears, and Cecil uses a lightning item* (you can’t control him yet). They arrive and land at Baron. Baigan meets Cecil at the gates, and leads him to King Baron.
During his meeting with the King, Cecil questions King Baron’s motives. The king takes this as distrust, and dismisses Cecil from the Red Wings! He assigns him to eliminate the Phantom Beasts in the Mist Valley. Kain comes in and defends Cecil, but to no avail. The king orders him to go with Cecil. He gives them the Bomb Ring, and sends them on their way. Kain apologies profusely, but Cecil refuses to hear it (sort of). Go down into the 1st floor, go to the right, and press the button on that wall. Grab the treasure (480 gil, an Ether, and a Tent) Go to the left and go through the passages until Rosa stops you. She says she’ll come to your room tonight. Keep going until Cid stops you. He talks about how Rosa’s been worried. He also says that he’s concerned about the King, as he’s asked him to build new airships.
Go up to your room. Cecil will have a bit of a monologue with himself about King Baron’s changing ways. Rosa comes in soon after, and Cecil begins to doubt himself. Rosa worries about Cecil and makes it known to him. Cecil continues to doubt himself. Morning then comes, and Cecil meets Kain on the 1st floor. They head out of the castle. If you have an emulator that can speed things up, now might be a good time to use that speedup. You won’t miss anything important.
Go into town and pick up some items in some pots, then head out and build a level or two. This could take awhile, but with the enemies so weak, you don’t need to utilize Kain’s jump command yet. Get a feel for the battles, then when you’re confident enough to do so, head northwest to the Mist cave. Remember, in the hardtype, Cecil can use the Dark Wave command. This causes damage to every enemy, but I feel that it’s useless since it causes so little damage. I suggest building both Cecil and Kain to Level 11 or 12 before going into the Mist Cave. If you go into the Inn in Baron, you’ll find some treasure by clicking the swords in the upper right corner. When you’re ready, go back out and go a bit west until you find a circle-shaped forest area. Those are where Chocobos hang out. Catch a yellow one and go to the Mist cave (you don’t fight monsters while on a Chocobo). Dismount the Chocobo, it’ll run back to its forest. Then go into the cave.
In the Mist Cave, follow the path until you get a dialog telling you to Turn Back. Cecil asks who is there, but gets no response. Grab the nearby treasure chest for a potion, then go east until you reach another ladder. Go up that ladder and go east again for an eye drop. Keep going south down the path that leads to another chest. Open it for a tent. Go back and go East until you find another treasure chest. Grab what’s inside that one, and go north. A dialog appears, saying "Leave Now". Kain asks if it’s a Phantom Beast. Go up some more. That same voice says that you’re from Baron, Kain wonders who’s there. You end up with a decision to make. It asks if you insist on proceeding. If you’re not at full HP, say no and use some potions. If you don’t wanna use potions, then go ahead and say yes. A battle will ensue.
Mist Dragon
HP: 465

Difficulty (scale of 1-10): 1
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Attack while the Dragon is in dragon form, using Kain’s jump command. Attack with Cecil (Magus in the picture shown). If you’re wounded, take the time to heal while it is in MIST form. Do NOT attack it, otherwise you’ll get hit with a blizzard, causing some pretty good damage.
After defeating it, you get 200 gil and 350 EXP. Leave the cave and go into the Village of Mist. You will lose Kain after this, so unequip him so that you have stuff to sell. Your bomb ring will go off, and set the Village on fire! This was a trap by the King to eliminate this village. You see a girl crying for her mommy. By killing the Mist Dragon, you killed this girl’s mother (for shame, player!). Cecil refuses to believe it. Kain says that the King sent you to eliminate the summoners, and that they have no choice to kill the girl. Cecil refuses to kill her, and renounces all loyalty to Baron. Kain does the same, but not necessarily for you. Cecil then suggests that they take the girl to safety. She refuses to go with them, and a battle ensues.
Girl
HP: N/A
My Levels: Cecil 11, Kain 11
Difficulty (scale of 1-10): N/A
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Just defend. Surely you don’t want to hurt an innocent little girl! She summons Titan, who uses an Earthquake. It does around 100 + damage, nothing deadly, but it ends the battle. You end up down on the ground with the Girl, but Kain is nowhere to be found. Cecil hopes that Kain is alive somewhere, takes the girl, and leaves. You are now near the village of Mist, with full HP, but alone. Go north into the Desert until you reach a town.
