ModeratorIt’s not year-round, there’s about a month break in June.
They are a lot more hardcore in that regard, though.

ModeratorTranslation of the Wu/Wei mods I’d be willing to help out with :)
An editor not so much at this point. I’ve had to deal with too much low-level stuff at work lately to do something so crazy complicated. Maybe once things have cooled down on that front a bit I’ll think about it.
Hmm… wouldn’t surprise me if the format is similar though. I guess I’d have to take a look at the ROM to do the translation bits anyway.

ModeratorYou can get him back, usually by fusing one fool with another (as I recall that’ll give you lower level personae).
Also you could always buy him from the velvet room if you registered him there. Orpheus is nothing special… actually, he’s not very good in general except that one combo move.

ModeratorYeah, I didn’t actually do either side-story. How long was Sherris’? Maybe I’ll try them if I ever get around to doing a new game +…

ModeratorHow about the static/dynamic games?
i.e. static would be something like Vandal Hearts, where you’re pretty much either actively battling or preparing to battle.
Whereas dynamic would be something like Growlanser, where you can move around freely as long as you’re not especially busy with something.
I’m not sure where Shining Force, FFT or GL2 fit in. One of the things I particularly disliked about GL2 was that it felt too stilted; the out-of-battle portion felt sort of tacked on. SF is sort of the same way, in that there are only a couple things you do between battles; look for characters and buy new equipment. Not much story and no side-quests. FFT is more balanced.
I think this is a question of flows (see this review) (/blatant plug). Now I want to take a page from Jay’s book and write up flows showing why I don’t enjoy some TRPGs :)
Although I like dynamic systems, some more static ones I work fine with. Warsong and DL have slower-paced battles so I’m fine with their mental clutter. In fact, no equipment in Warsong – battle preparations take 5 minutes at most. But half an hour or more of moving characters across a desert (lookin’ at you, SF) and THEN, after that, having to worry about character placement when most chars can only move 2 spaces… is not fun.

ModeratorApparently he feels like his children are getting beat up and having their testicles stepped upon.
And here I thought he was screwed up before…

ModeratorYeah, Tile Molester and Tile Layer Pro are fairly similar. There are a half-dozen or so programs that will do it.

ModeratorIt’s quite possible to change graphics, although it’s not something I considered for DoaEd.
I would recommend using a program like Tile Layer Pro. If you open the ROM you’ll notice the smaller sprites for each character (i.e. Guan Yu carrying his little halberd). They’re divided into 4 tiles.
Just under those sprites and some of the hanzi sprites leftover from the translation, you’ll find the portraits in 6 sets of 6 tiles.
TLP has a "tile arranger" feature that will let you arrange, for example, Liu Bei’s full portrait. You can then edit the individual tiles and replace the rom.
So you could replace some lesser character’s unique portrait with one for Cao Cao or Sun Jian – it’d just take some effort.
Here’s what things look like in TLP:

By clicking and dragging the elements down to the arranger, I was able to get the whole picture and make a happy Liu Bei portrait. Looks kind of creepy, actually. On the left is a rather skeletal-looking Guan Yu sprite.

ModeratorYes, FS2 is really fun, but I only got halfway. It was pretty tough to play since I played it in Japanese which I’m not very good at.

ModeratorI’m finishing up Fire Emblem (GC) and playing Wii games with family back home. I think I’ve gotten my parents addicted… my dad hasn’t played a game since the C64 days and my mom never has :)
Zhuge Liang, is your new avatar from Fantasy Sango 2 (幻想三国志)?

Wikipedia entry for Water Margin
The version I read was called Outlaws of the Marsh. It was quite good, although nothing quite tops 3k.
Niahak
ModeratorIt’s based on Water Margin, yeah.
It’s much harder to start than ROTK. I was into it for a while, but the difficulty was a bit much for me.

ModeratorI always used Lindwurm cavalry with one of the doctors, so each attack they’d recover 10 soldiers. Usually that kept them healthy enough to do a lot of damage before I needed to heal them manually.

ModeratorPersona 4 was announced today for the PS2. Will be out in Japan early next year; no news yet on if we’ll receive a translation.
Much rejoicing!

ModeratorJust wanted to give this thread the "new" thingy so you notice the front page. It’s a pretty minor update, but things are more official-looking now (as I finally submitted to romhacking.net).
