ParticipantI play a PC version. A Taiwanese company adapts DOAE from the Japanese NES version into the PC. Therefore, my version seems to have some features that the Japanese NES version does not have.
The thunder tactics that I encounter in the PC version are distinct from fire and water tactics. There are two thunder tactics in the Taiwanese PC version. But it seems to me that the original NES does not have it.
Lu Bu’s intelligence index may be different when we face him at Jing Zhou. But it is the same character.

ParticipantI am glad to hear that Zhang Lu helps you a lot. Zhuge Liang strengthens our tactics if he is in the battle. I certainly acknowledge it, since I use a seven men lineup (still in Shu right now). But I am still worried that we cannot use tactics in a battle, when someone kills Zhuge Liang with an An Sha. We risk losing our strategist and access to tactics in a five men front.
I tend to insert Ma Liang as the sixth person, using him during battles at castles, gates, and citadels.

ParticipantWe apparently forget to mention that Guan Xing uses a different weapon from Guan Yu and Guan Suo. While Guan Yu and Guan Suo use sabres, Guan Xing uses swords just like Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei.
Hmm, what levels are you guys on? I train my troops at Mian Zhu Citadel until level 95 or above. If you don’t mind spend so much time strengthening your troops, you can do the same thing. Then, Cao Cao will go down easily.
I guess I need to be more humble towards enemy troops in DOAE2, by not maximizing my levels crazily. Then, I can try the Yi Wen array.

ParticipantI can see this strategy work effectively in Shu. But once we battle Wei troops, I believe that Ba Gua is the strongest. Wei troops’ numbers are so high that we cannot form Yi Wen and kill them quickly, unless we reach level 99 while we are in Shu.
Despite of the fact that I do not favour Yi Wen (my level is so high that I don’t need it in Shu), can you share more about your Yi Wen strategy, Zhang Lu?

ParticipantI download my emulator from a site in China. Yes, it may be an emulator glitch instead of the ROM’s.
Zheng’s Letter, as well as many key items (Tally Order, Blood Seal, etc.), cannot be dropped in the original game. Some people manage to duplicate Zheng’s Letter because they alter the Chinese emulators.
Meanwhile, I am compiling a list of items that we can find by using the "check" command. Stay tuned.

ParticipantI just tried to recruit Zhang Lu and it does not work. Liu Bei tells Pang Tong that he needs to recruit three more generals. Zhang Lu does not appear at all although I followed Lord Yuan Shu’s walkthrough step by step.
Lord Yuan Shu, what type of emulator do you use? Since I use a Chinese emulator, I wonder whether it prevents me from taking advantage of this glitch.
Despite of that, it is not too big of a deal for me. Zhang Lu does not have many strong points other than his 5100 soldier count. I am satisfied with my current lineup: Zhang Fei, Ma Su, Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, Pang Tong. I have not fought Ma Chao and Ma Dai yet.
Samuel
ParticipantCongratulations, Lord Yuan Shu. You have accomplished what I think to be impossible. Here is my toast, cheers!
Indeed, Chen Jiao is a tough opponent for this battle. He repels most of our tactics with 195 intelligence. By the way, he has 4100 soldiers instead of 4200.

ParticipantFor DOAE3, I actually mean that I cannot promise to translate all the places in a short while. If I get to them, I will post them in the DOAE3 threads.
For the battle that Lord Yuan Shu asks, I don’t think that we have a chance to win. If we use Yu Lin, we can limit Chen Jiao’s tactics. However, others’ attacks are way too strong. All of their strikes are critical hits because we do not have the Tally Order. In this screenshot, a critical hit from Xiahou Dun may be able to kill Zhuge Liang.
Our attacks hurt them so little that we will not be able to take out Chen Jiao, if he sets up Feng Jian array. Yi Ji won’t give us enough TP as the strategist.
Conclusion: We don’t stand a chance. It’s better to conquer Jing Zhou at least. Save a few levels and you may skip Xiang Yang and Yi Ling. If you choose to fight this battle, get Da Re (level 32, takes WAY TOO MUCH TIME) and you may have a chance.
Samuel
ParticipantActually, anybody can recruit Pang Tong. He is in Jiang Xia (#17) in the first stage. He moves to Lin Xiang (#19) in the second stage.
Any lord who has Guan Yu can recruit Guan Ping and Zhou Cang at Jin Yang (#13) in the first stage. Liu Bei usually recruits them very early in the second stage, since they are found in Xin Ye (#16).
Yes, only Liu Bei can recruit Zhao Yun (#3, Dai Xian in stage one; #16, Xin Ye in stage two).
In fact, any lord can recruit Pang De at Xi Du (#35) during the first stage. I once used Cao Cao and managed to find him by the time I conquered Xi Du.
Correction from my post: If you use Sun Quan during the second stage, Zhou Yu is already active in Lin Xiang (#19). Sun Jian’s recruitment on him in Shou Chun (#9) only applies in stage one.

ParticipantLord Yuan Shu:
That is the screen shot that I am referring to. Zhang Bao is Zhang Jue’s younger brother. Cheng Yuan Zhi is one of their generals.
TaiShi Ci:
You can skip Jing Zhou theoretically. I have never done it. But I once forgot to grab the Tally Order. Battles in Xiang Yang, Yi Ling, and Nan Jun become very difficult. All of the generals’ attacks are critical hits. If you skip Jing Zhou and head straight to Nan Jun, you may run into Cao Ren, Cao Hong (Cao Ang in the game, translation error), Xiahou Dun, Niu Jin, and possibly Chen Jiao. All of them may strike you with critical hits and Chen Jiao burns you with his Li Jian and Xin Luan. It should be a mightily difficult battle to win.
For DOAE3, I can promise you to translate the cities in a short while. But I can do my best once I have time.
Samuel
ParticipantLet me go back to DOAE2 a little bit. I just defeated Cao Ren at Nan Jun. We can skip not only Yi Ling, but also Xiang Yang. However, the Nan Jun battle is even tougher. Cao Ren, Cao Ang (should be Cao Hong in the original Japanese version, the English translators mix up Cao Ang and Cao Hong), Xiahou Dun, and Niu Jin.
I had to keep using Luo Shi, since normal attacks kills merely 20 to 50 soldiers. I won the battle but used up almost all of my TP. Then, I discover that I can enter Xiang Yang and Yi Ling without a fight.
But I do not recommend skipping Xiang Yang and Yi Ling. In doing so, we lose valuable EXP. Notice that we do not gain any EXP after the Nan Jun battle.
I will get to DOAE3 when I can. Anyway, I still want to point out a mistake in the website’s translation. In the DOAE3 title screenshot, the three generals are not Yuan Shao’s. They are Zhang Bao, Cheng Yuan Zhi, and Zhang Jue (Yellow Turban Rebel Leaders).
DOAE3 looks weird. It sounds like Final Fantasy more than ROTK type games. Besides, why do Liu Bei’s generals look like pygmies while the enemies are as enormous as giants?
Samuel
ParticipantNo, I can’t even read the fonts.
Samuel
ParticipantI just defeated Chen Jiao. I used the Yu Lin array and Ce Fan tactic, totally crippled Chen Jiao’s tactics.
Yu Lin is good for us to defend enemy’s tactics, if our generals’ intelligence are low.
Samuel
ParticipantI see. I do not consider Meng Da at all. His agility is good; yet, his strength and intelligence are still too low for me to include him. Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, Ma Liang, and Ma Su are better than Meng Da (prior to the acquisitions on Ma Chao and Ma Dai), in my opinion.
Samuel
ParticipantLet me try to be more specific, this secret place is located before you encounter Zhang Ren and Liu Gui at the gate.
I am sorry if they exclude this trick in the English version.
